I'd like to congratulate all the forty five players who played in the Ohio Cooperative Point Series this winter. You were a part of Ohio Disc Golf history as DGLA helped to bring the leagues, clubs and players throughout the state closer together - with your help we hope this starts a great new chapter of Ohio Disc Golf. You also survived one of the craziest winter season in many many years.
We look forward to working with you to continue to grow and improve Disc Golf leagues in Ohio in the years to come. This Winter season gave 45dedicated players a chance to see how the State-wide Point Series works and you now have a leg up on the many other players who will join us out on the courses throughout the warmer summer weather. When you walk the course and dream of where this sport could go or how leagues could be better, what does it look like to you - share your ideas and together we can cooperatively help our wonderful sport grow and improve.

So a quick look at the overall final standings and then some stats and trends from February.
I have been watching the Point Series stats from the first small one in Michigan 5 years ago. The factors change as the number & size of leagues change. One of the key stats normally is Average Points per Round. With the trend being those who normally have a higher point average per round are normally the ones at the top of the leaderboard at the end of the season but there are other factors such as how often you actually play.
For the top ten I generated the stats to begin looking at the numbers:
Points / Round average:
Max 21.6
Avg 18.87354716
Min 17.22222222
I initially was surprised to see that the Max Pt/Round was from 10th place. Greg Platt with 108 points ended up tied with Steven Cain but Greg did it in one less round than Steven to achieve the highest point/round average - Nicely done Greg - a few more rounds like that and you at the top of the list.
Maybe more surprising was that the lowest pt/round avg was at the 5th spot - 17.2 by Mickey Anderson, way to make ever round count Mickey, another one to watch this summer if he gets more rounds in...
Back to tenth place to look a little deeper. Greg Platt with 5 rounds had 5 league wins between two different leagues he played - man you can't get much more consistent than that. Nicely played Greg.
With less rounds the difference between point totals is less, this gap will grow as league size grows. This smaller gap was just what Steven Cain took advantage of and with the extra round tied Greg for the 10th spot.
Joe Michelini did a little bit of both - add another round and a league win - bada-bing bada-boom - he jumped up to 9th place solo.
Does that formula work for others? - well ask james moose graham - he added another round and won 3 of his 7 rounds.
Now which is more important, the win or the # of rounds? Well Thomas Golubski got in just one more round but did not have as many wins BUT he consistently was near the top of each round with 2 wins, four 2nd place, one 3rd place and one 4th place round finishes to secure 7th place.
Also with 8 rounds; three 2nd place, a 3rd place and a 5th place but added one more win for three wins PK Deaner with a 2 pt advantage takes 6th place - Nice win.
Mickey Anderson takes advantage of the round count, rewarded for getting out in the winter weather with 9 rounds takes 5th place.
Three wins and 11 rounds, the points total up for Mike Thomas to secure 4th place.
tim toth also had 11 rounds and three wins but managed to squeeze 23 more points out of those other 8 rounds he did not win to edge up to 3rd place.
If the formula works why not add another win and another round and the results say 10 more points and one more rung up the leaderboard ladder to 2nd place - nibble as a ninja - Bill "The Ninja" Savage. Great season Bill.
Ok, Have I beat this trend to death yet, well I don't need to tell Larry Bright Jr. He was bright enough or skilled enough to get to the top of the leaderboard for most of the season. with 14 rounds and 5 round wins - that was the winning formula and why Larry Bright Jr. is our First ever DGLA Ohio State Disc Golf League Champion for Winter 2013/14.
What a great achievement - great play this Winter Larry. Larry I hope your warmed up because the Summer Point Series really turns up the heat. New players, more players, playing more rounds and traveling to more leagues - Man this is going to be fun...

Playing the numbers game - the more rounds you play the higher the probability is that you will maximize your point total. Again those players with more rounds tend to be higher on the leaderboard.
Larry Bright Jr. topped the Rounds leaderboard and it seemed to help him overall ;-)

Playing more should help continue your growth and add to your experience which allows you to perform in more situations at a higher level. The ultimately formula for success in the point series is consistently playing often at a high level - one measure of that is the number of wins. The highest number of league wins in February was achieved by both PK Deaner & tim toth with 2 wins each.

The name of the game in the Point Series is Points. Not surprising this month again Larry Bright Jr. managed to achieve the highest point total in 5 rounds of 96 points. During the same period Jesse Walker was able to come close to that point total, 70 points in 4 rounds.

January Weekly and Monthly stats update
OhCPS - Finale?
All of us here at DGLA are excited to see how the Ohio players have taken to the Ohio Cooperative Point Series and provided feedback and suggestions. This interaction is a great starting place for the Cooperative aspect and shows that the future of the OhCPS is great if history is an indicator the Ohio disc golf leagues are posed for some significant growth. Very exciting.
A few have asked about a event to wrap up the season. We are excited to explore this for the future with interested players and league admin in Ohio. In the mean time here is something to consider that has added excitement and the chance for more points in other Cooperative Point Series. The Raid: With a little collaboration and cooperation you can get a few local leagues to converge ("Raid") at one league round and have a super league round. Now only one league post the round so this could affect individual leagues as they have one less round for the season but the net gain is worth it and the impact is minimized if the plan is posted and discussed with the league members early. If you pick a morning league and afternoon league you can really maximize the fun with many more players, grab a bar-B for a fun lunch before the 2nd round. At the end of the winter season a few fair weather players begin to come out of hibernation and are trying to get back in the swing of the game - these types of events are a great way to get more players out and the current players smiling - The more players, the more points but even more important, the MORE FUN.
OhCPS - The Future is in your hands...
So you see that players make a difference; with suggestions, and even questions to help us identify what is not clear to everyone and of course the volunteers. There are many ways to get involved and help Disc Golf leagues and the sport grow and improve.
Everyone has an impact, either negatively or positively. It can be as simple as helping a league Admin during registration. These guys help ensure we have a consistent event to increase our fun. How often do we thank them for their efforts - THANKS for all you do - League Admin.
Creating a fair, safe and encouraging environment to play our sport with other players that we can share, grow and compete with, week after week, is a major factor in the growth of this sport.
Tournaments are the ultimate test of players skill at that moment, under those conditions with a strong focus on competition. Leagues bring players together week after week with more emphasis on fun while still competing, learning, sharing. Look at any sport and you will find many time more players involved in leagues and the more players in leagues means an increase in players attending tournaments.
The future of Ohio Disc Golf is in the hands of the Ohio players on the courses right now. DGLA is excited to help you define and achieve your goals and we will share what others are doing in other states.

First realize their is only three weeks left in the OhCPS-Winter 2014 - Can you tell the seasons are changing and Spring is almost here??? OK maybe we need to send mother nature a Outlook reminder but Spring weather will arrive, the bugs will start to do their thing, the casual will attack the courses as well and we will continue to play our game. Dig out of the recent snow and get ready for shorts and tee shirts soon.

In January 25 players played rounds in the OhCPS-W, that is a OhCPS Record for January (OK it's the first January of the OhCPS but all records have to start some place ;-) AWESOME!
So what was the result of those January winter rounds?....

Now not everyone has the opportunity to play multiple times a week and so there are some (performing) "sleepers" out there that if they could, the stats show they would be giving the leaders a run for their points.
Let's look at Average Points per Round accumulation:
Kevin Daney - Although for January he is sitting at 10th for point accumulation in January he has the highest point/round average of 22 - 1st place finish at Sims Sunday Winter Scrambles. Kevin has won both of his two rounds in the OhCPS. Keep it up Kevin.

OhCPS - Finale?
All of us here at DGLA are excited to see how the Ohio players have taken to the Ohio Cooperative Point Series and provided feedback and suggestions. This interaction is a great starting place for the Cooperative aspect and shows that the future of the OhCPS is great if history is an indicator the Ohio disc golf leagues are posed for some significant growth. Very exciting.
A few have asked about a event to wrap up the season. We are excited to explore this for the future with interested players and league admin in Ohio. In the mean time here is something to consider that has added excitement and the chance for more points in other Cooperative Point Series. The Raid: With a little collaboration and cooperation you can get a few local leagues to converge ("Raid") at one league round and have a super league round. Now only one league post the round so this could affect individual leagues as they have one less round for the season but the net gain is worth it and the impact is minimized if the plan is posted and discussed with the league members early. If you pick a morning league and afternoon league you can really maximize the fun with many more players, grab a bar-B for a fun lunch before the 2nd round. At the end of the winter season a few fair weather players begin to come out of hibernation and are trying to get back in the swing of the game - these types of events are a great way to get more players out and the current players smiling - The more players, the more points but even more important, the MORE FUN.
OhCPS - The Future is in your hands...
So you see that players make a difference; with suggestions, and even questions to help us identify what is not clear to everyone and of course the volunteers. There are many ways to get involved and help Disc Golf leagues and the sport grow and improve.
Everyone has an impact, either negatively or positively. It can be as simple as helping a league Admin during registration. These guys help ensure we have a consistent event to increase our fun. How often do we thank them for their efforts - THANKS for all you do - League Admin.
Creating a fair, safe and encouraging environment to play our sport with other players that we can share, grow and compete with, week after week, is a major factor in the growth of this sport.
Tournaments are the ultimate test of players skill at that moment, under those conditions with a strong focus on competition. Leagues bring players together week after week with more emphasis on fun while still competing, learning, sharing. Look at any sport and you will find many time more players involved in leagues and the more players in leagues means an increase in players attending tournaments.
The future of Ohio Disc Golf is in the hands of the Ohio players on the courses right now. DGLA is excited to help you define and achieve your goals and we will share what others are doing in other states.

First realize their is only three weeks left in the OhCPS-Winter 2014 - Can you tell the seasons are changing and Spring is almost here??? OK maybe we need to send mother nature a Outlook reminder but Spring weather will arrive, the bugs will start to do their thing, the casual will attack the courses as well and we will continue to play our game. Dig out of the recent snow and get ready for shorts and tee shirts soon.

First the deadline for adding new leagues to the OhCPS-W 2014 has passed so what leagues are in now are the leagues you can earn points at:

So what's been going throughout Ohio leagues in the last few weeks? Well I'm not in Ohio and I am not out playing your leagues so all I have are these stats to comment on. I'd love to add any insights, crazy happenings and any local color anyone is willing to share. Otherwise I will just scan the stats and see who is doing what. The other thing that would help is a few pictures of leagues; registration, some play, the weather ect. Post the pictures on your profile and in the Album setting link them to your league, then everyone can get a view of disc golf throughout the state or across the country. I see Osborne Iceberg League has 87 photos - Thanks! Looks like everyone is having a winter blast ;-)
Ok for the month of December (1st – 28th) , two days after the 28th, Disc Golf Scene magic happens and the special weekly Leaderboards lock – only those rounds posted to that points are included.
The overall leader board updates when ever a league round is posted or updated.
The results - Players get extra Achievement Bling on their profile pages and the special leaderboards memorialises the achievements; the most Rounds played and most Points accumulated during a week, and Month, as well as most Wins and most Leagues played for the month.

Leagues with less than 20 players the points are calculated starting with 20 for the winner, plus 2 points for participation and if there is no tie for first then they are the Outright winner and get an extra point.
So even a league of 4 players the winner(s) get at least 20 points. A round has to have at least 4 players to count. So playing any league in Ohio even if there are only 4 players keeps you in the running. It looks like the current winter Ohio leagues run between 16 to 4 player per round.
The OhCPS - uses your two best rounds and drops the others - Play a third round drop your worst round - maximize your points. It's a long winter - anything can happen.

Most rounds played in a given week for December was 3, achieved by two players.
Larry Bright Jr. 2 rounds week 5 as mentioned above when he racked up the 41 points.

In a 14 week Point series a good week is great but consistency is long term success strategy. Just getting out each week will keep you in striking distance and the ultimate is consistently winning but there are a lot of other players out there trying to do the same.

The trends for December are pretty clear. The players who got in their two rounds in a week racked up the most points. Wins helps - collecting the most points for a given round. You don't have to win a bunch of round to collect a bunch of points and stay within striking distance for the long haul.

Ok so some of the secrets are pretty obvious.
The more rounds you play the higher the probability you will learn new skills to improve your game.
The more you improve the better your finish and the points help track that for you.
Getting out even when the weather is challenging. You get used to playing in differing conditions - your ready for any situation.... It's also great to be out on the course in different conditions to experience the full range of beauty that our parks offer us.
The more leagues you visit the more you learn about how different groups run their leagues, side games, new ideas, and these ideas spread. You also meet more players, make new friends and find new players to play with.
Like weather conditions courses change the game as well. The more courses you play the better you are at assessing the course and your find your throw more variety of shots, versus playing the same holes the same way each round.

So what's been going throughout Ohio leagues in the last few weeks? Well I'm not in Ohio and I am not out playing your leagues so all I have are these stats to comment on. I'd love to add any insights, crazy happenings and any local color anyone is willing to share. Otherwise I will just scan the stats and see who is doing what. The other thing that would help is a few pictures of leagues; registration, some play, the weather ect. Post the pictures on your profile and in the Album setting link them to your league, then everyone can get a view of disc golf throughout the state or across the country. I see Osborne Iceberg League has 87 photos - Thanks! Looks like everyone is having a winter blast ;-)
Ok for the month of December (1st – 28th) , two days after the 28th, Disc Golf Scene magic happens and the special weekly Leaderboards lock – only those rounds posted to that points are included.
The overall leader board updates when ever a league round is posted or updated.
The results - Players get extra Achievement Bling on their profile pages and the special leaderboards memorialises the achievements; the most Rounds played and most Points accumulated during a week, and Month, as well as most Wins and most Leagues played for the month.
