Hey everyone! I don't know if you will get a notification for an inactive league, but I wanted to give you an update on the 2012 Ace Fund.

We finished the season with $219 in the Ace Fund. At our last league rounds, we discussed using the money for a big end of season barbeque/party, which we never did. We also had $28.01 in unused Ace Fund from 2011 left over after spending the rest on course improvements at Tuttle. I have rolled that over into the 2012 Ace Fund and closed the books on 2011. That leaves us with $247.01 of 2012 Ace Funds still unspent.

This league has always been a grass-roots, organic, democratic sort of creature, so I am going to just sit on the money until we start up again in March--Tuesday, March 12th, to be exact. At that time, those of you who show up can help decide what to do with the money. Do you still want to throw a party, roll it into the 2013 Ace Fund to start big, or maybe use some or all of it to help sponsor a new hole at the Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course Expansion? Let's talk!

Ice Bowl Registration is still open, but the ABSOLUTE DEADLINE for those who plan to raise $30 and/or 30 lbs of food to earn the "Will Disc Golf for Food" T-Shirt is THIS SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 16TH AT 5PM! In other words, you must register for the tournament and indicate on the registration form that you want to earn a t-shirt No Later than this Saturday if you want to actually receive a t-shirt. This is the T-Shirt companies deadline, not mine.

PLEASE PASS THE WORD TO ANYONE WHO MIGHT HAVE AN INTEREST!

Tonight was the last night of the 2012 Manhattan Area Disc Golf Doubles League. Daylight Savings will come to an end this weekend, effectively shutting us down. We have just over $200 in the Ace Fund. We will hold a small portion of that back to do some course repairs, and spend the rest on an end of the season picnic, probably coming up soon on a non-KSU-home-football-game-Saturday.

FYI... I have just finished the 3 busiest weeks of the year in my job, and have not done the best job of communicating league information or recording scores online. Things should be much more consistent from here on out. Thanks to all who have stepped up to help during the past several weeks, especially Mark Kewley for running league in my absence!

Anyway... we will make due tonight with whatever we have. In the past, baskets were pulled at Tuttle for 3-4 weeks for Stampede, so there is a good chance we will be at Fairmont again next week as well. I did not check today, but I would be shocked if they were back in the ground already!

I'm sorry to report that I can't attend this evening. I did not know that there was a plan to set up a temp course again this week... I wish I could see it... maybe later.

Anyhoo, regarding the design of the next nine, here are my thoughts.

There seems to be 5 to 7 DFOK members who have expressed interest in helping put their time, money & sweat equity into designing & building the next nine at Fairmont Park. Plus, by now I doubt there are many locals that haven't heard about it that would step forward to make their interest known... In other words we know our "design team".

Plus, there are some cool wooded areas we haven't even looked into yet. These areas should not be over looked...

Also, I am big on two phrase because they really make sense when designing something. "Haste makes waste" and "Failing to plan is planning to fail".

With all of that in mind, I think we are to a point that we need to start setting up design meetings at Fairmont Park in order to fully explore it's potential. These meetings will not require baskets or more than a couple hours at a time. Plus there's the DFOK Google Group that's set-up for this sort of stuff...

I'll work on getting a Fairmont on-site design meeting set-up soon.

Tonight is Doubles night!

Once again we will be playing at Fairmont on a temporary back 9.

Once again we will need at least 9 portable baskets. I can provide 3 of them, so we need at least 6 more.

I will mark a new temporary 9 this afternoon. It will incorporate some of the holes from the Austin/Clouse set up from last week, but will have a few new twists.

Remember, the idea is to try some different layouts before we settle on a permanent back 9 layout that we will work with Riley County on. As a group, we will try to evaluate the various layouts based upon the following criteria:

1. Parameters given to us by Riley County. If the county ain't happy, it ain't happening!
2. Safety. If there are injuries or property damage, the county may shut us down as well.
3. Happy Neighbors. Whether their concerns are reasonable or unreasonable doesn't matter. Angry neighbors are a roadblock.
4. Flow. Right now the plan is to flow smoothly from old hole 2 to our new nine and back to old hole 3 in a way that first time players can navigate without a guide, and that will not require unnecessarily long walks between holes or crossing fairways. We also want to consider Speed of Play issues. Too many lost discs means slow recreational, league, and tournament play.
6. Best use of land and obstacles. How can we get the most bang for our buck?
7. Fun! How can we make the new 9 fun for all abilities of play?
8. Lefty/Righty balance. What constitutes a righty/lefty favored hole is debatable, but we should at least consider this.
9. Variety. We don't want 9 450 ft wide open bombers, or 9 technical tunnel shots... you get the idea.
10. Excellence! The course won't be perfect, but we want a new nine that we can all be proud of!

And of course, sorry if I came across too jerky. I just want to make sure we keep the promises I've already had to make... I think Riley Co. is going to do us up right, as long as we do the same to them.
