Good turnout last week, with solid weather. Looks good again for Saturday - let's try and get to 45 people for the last league I'm going to run up here! Also let's get a freaking ace - we had just one ace last summer and none yet this winter despite playing at Westchester so much!

Week 9 was solid scoring conditions, and Murphy took full advantage, besting me by 2 strokes to take down A Pool with a bogey-free -11. Dave Griffin dominated B Pool, winning by 3 strokes.

Payouts have been sent!

Keep an eye on Winter League #20, whose page is already up...some of the changes (I believe) are that they're ONLY doing Venmo, so if you don't have an account, get one. The rating cutoffs for pools are also shifting - so you upper 800s-rated folks, enjoy B pool this week; there are about to be some bigger dogs thrown in. Not that I have any say, but I think these are great changes - James and Dan are going to be great stewards of sanctioned singles.

Week 8 payouts are up - we're going to be at Westchester the next two weeks, and then it's going to be up to whomever is running leagues for the rest of the winter - Davis right now just has too much snow on the ground.

Also, a reminder that if you're a 2023 member, we have a grace period for January, but why not renew that membership now and get it done with? You can send me your $30 with league dues and I will get you signed up, or just go over to the tournament page and pay directly there. And if you've never been an ADGA member, send me $40 and I'll get you signed up. It's a great value if you play leagues!

Well week 7 was "fun". Probably one of the more exhausting rounds of disc golf I've ever played. And I wouldn't blame Will, who lost THREE drives that (probably) landed in at least C2, if he never plays in the winter again. We'll see if we keep doing Davis this winter, but if it keeps dumping snow like this, it's starting to feel futile, and the sheer depth of the snow on the fairways is going to lead to more lost discs and 4-hour rounds. Might be better for everyone's morale (and back) to just focus on the 9 teepads at Westchester.

That said, we did all finish, and congratulations to Frank Costales and James Robinson, the only folks to throw under par, with a couple of 51s. And Jeremy Lukas took down C-pool with a career-high rated round!

Hole 5 blue is shoveled, but there's a tree leaning into the fairway. It is likely going to be easier to just clear 5 Red tomorrow, but if we can get the tree taken care of, we'll play 5 Blue. Bring a broom or something to carry along with your card, because the pads could use a sweep, and there are some snow showers coming tonight anyways. The snow is hella deep and loose, so make sure to eat a hearty breakfast and be liberal about using spotters.

I'll be out on Friday to see what we have in terms of Davis teepads - once again I'll make sure we have at least 9 to play from for Saturday, but somehow this winter is even more ridiculous than last winter, so it's starting to feel futile to try and get the full course up and playable. Of course if we get enough volunteers, anything is possible!

Remember to look at the PDGA live scoring page to confirm that hole 2 is/is not playing as an island. It probably will be!

This is as good a place as any to announce that the Winter Series #19 is the last league I'll be running - I'm leaving the state in late January. I'll be happy to help anyone who wants to run more leagues get going - it's not too bad once you have it set up. My advice is that you name the next two summer leagues Magical Mis5 Tree Tour and Magical 6 Tree Tour, but I don't know what I would have done for summer of 2025. That's frankly why I'm leaving the state - I don't want to see this house of cards I've set up with the league naming conventions come crashing down.

Also I have plenty of disc golf gear that I'll be selling, including baskets, bags, and a rack for holding discs.

It looks like there are a few inches of snow coming, so PLEASE take a broom with you if you're going out to play, and don't mash the snow into the teepads. If you can make some progress on getting them all cleared, that would also be great - I welcome comments below for an update on what still needs to be done. As of the last time we played, 1, 3, 6, 7, 8, and 9 Red, and 2, 4, and 5 Blue were pretty clear - hopefully the salt hasn't created any messes since then on those, and I'm hoping we've managed to clear others.

Great crowd out for week 4, 25 people! The teepads were almost unbelievably dry for early December, and it was merely "cold" not "bone-chilling".

Dan Allen grabbed the 16-person A Pool with a blistering -11, going bogey-free. He nudged out Seth Asing by one, who was the only other person who didn't register a bogey. Adding that island on hole 2 certainly has stopped me going bogey-free so far this winter.

Nas Munoz took down B pool with a 49, nice hambone on 8, 9, 10, 11!

As I mentioned, A pool had 16 folks in it, while only 7 were in B pool -- I'm wondering if we need to change the pool limits, since that keeps happening this winter. My proposal is having B Pool range from 840-919, and 920+ would be A Pool, and sub-840 would be C Pool. That way we might get more than just 1-2 folks in C Pool, and I think that lines up better with who plays Open versus Am. As always, you can move UP a pool if you want to stay in A pool and you're rated 915 (under this proposal).

Happy to take discussion on this; I probably won't change anything this league, so we can gather more data and take more public comment, but PDGA Series #20 might see a change.

It's $40 for new members (and I think you get a disc), and $30 for renewing members. Remember, we do roughly 40 weeks of singles leagues and probably about the same number of doubles, and you get $3 off per league. If you play in all of them, that's a $240 value! We're practically giving away memberships! Can you afford NOT to join?

Thanks to everyone who came out for week 3! It was tight, but we got 9 playable teepads, and we started wearing in some paths. Thank you to the groups starting on holes 5 and 7 for working on the first two pads you played. I'm optimistic we can get all 18 of the pads cleared by week 5!

Conditions were still pretty rough - despite only playing a couple of the tougher holes (2 and 5 blues, IMO), everyone carded at least two bogeys. Beckner took down A Pool by mixing in 7 birdies, including being the only one to get hole 3. I snuck into second place thanks to a clutch Dan Allen find of my disc - otherwise I was going to suffer the ignominy of being the only one to bogey hole 8. Dan, Jarod, John DelReal, and Seth all tied one stroke back for third. The last few weeks we've been seeing massive A Pools, and not as many folks in B Pool. Good indication for the quality of disc golf in Alaska, but we might start thinking about changing the ratings cutoff so things are more balanced.

The layout is still in flux - I'm going to try and get out there early and get at least the reds all salted, but 1, 2, 4, and 5 Blue at least have been shoveled, and if I can get them salted as well we'll be playing those. Otherwise probably just Reds 2X. Might want to bring ice cleats if you have 'em, just in case; right now there's some ice on all the pads.

There will be no payouts, including for aces, but we'll be giving a nice food and monetary donation to the St Francis Food Pantry. The encouraged donation is one Spiral Cut Ham or one Frozen Turkey - but if you want to do cash, the alternative is $20 (or more!). Well I'm playing Oak Grove, but y'all are playing Westchester. If you see this, please don't leave the shoveling to the 3-4 mostly MP40+ backs who have usually done the teepad clearing!

Wow, we got that round in at Kincaid just in time! Thanks to the 14 folks who came out this week, always a lower attendance week 1 for some reason; but it was a solid crowd for a drizzly day.

A Pool, which had 10 of the 14 participants, was taken down by Brian, who shot 7 down. A new guy, not sure if he's just up for a visit or going to be a regular, took second with 6 down, and Dan Allen tied with me for third, with his round the only bogey-free one, 5 under. Mike B nudged out Oliver Salem for the B pool title with an even par round.

Shout out to Morgan, who managed a roughly 250-foot throw-in on 12 for a birdie! No ace pot but honestly probably more impressive than most of the aces we'll see at Westchester this year.

Speaking of, the schedule for week 2 currently says Westchester but I don't know if the baskets are in yet. Regardless, it'll be good to shovel off the pads BEFORE people smash the snow into them if you get a chance. Also, avoid salt if you can! It's probably not possible this early in the year but it would be great to have a nice clean and DRY teepad to play off of if possible.

I'm going to try and send a couple groups out early (or late) so we can all start on hole 1 if possible. Kincaid can be a lot of walking. Do try to be there by 11 so we can do a shotgun if that's what we need to do.
