With the removal of the course at Russian Jack several years ago, Alaska lost its only disc golf course located on a golf course. While I generally prefer the woods, it was always nice to be able to open up and rip drivers in the wide open. My initial impression of this new course is that it is a FUN layout to play, and will challenge and entertain all levels of ability. The par three holes offer a good variety of shots. Some are reachable only by those with above average distance, while others can be birdied by almost any experienced player. The five par fours cover a similar spectrum, one I will most likely never birdie (900 feet), two that will challenge me to throw two great shots, and two that I will aspire to birdie on most attempts.
This was my first time playing disc golf with a golf cart, and I must admit that it was pretty enjoyable. We played two 18 hole rounds and had enough left in our tanks to head to another course for two more. If you were to walk the course, you'd definitely get some mileage on the legs. Golfers on the course are for the most part very accommodating; there were times when we let a group play through and other times we played through ourselves. It appears as though the management has already done a good job of making the two user groups aware of the shared nature of the property, and we definitely felt welcomed. The fees for a day of play are $10 per player, which I found reasonable given the great care the grounds crew takes in maintaining the course. Cart rentals are a bit more to shell out for, but I imagine that I will spring for it on most of my future visits here. Who wouldn't want to drive a cart around while tossing plastic?
This is a beautiful place to play and definitely a welcome addition to Alaska's disc golf scene. Get your rollers practiced up, work on those flex distance shots and prepare to have a lot of fun.
