On a family vacation to Tybee Island, I was able to get a quick 9 hole round at Jaycee Park DGC. This course has 2 tees per hole which I absolutely love in a course design. This allows each disc golfer to decide which layout they want to play, or even loop the course twice playing both tees and getting 18 holes of disc golf in. I think this is an outstanding way to present a 9 hole disc golf course. During my round, I opted to play the longer tees because some of the short tees were suuuuper short. Now, after seeing how I played, I see that maybe I should have gone for the short tees. I was just not on this day. With that being said, even when playing the long tee layout, this course is very scoreable. If I had the course to play over again, I would loop the course from the short tees first, and then loop it a second time playing the long tees after learning how the holes play. This is how I would recommend anyone new to this course to play it and I wish I had done it myself. This course is located in a beautiful park with a creek running through the property. This creek never really came into play for me, but I can definitely see it coming into play if you aren’t hitting your lines because the majority of the holes play near the creek. Overall, I thought the design was pretty good for what property was allowed for the course. One spot in particular (holes 4 and 5) I didn’t particularly like because of how the holes crossed fairways. Looking at the overhead map, I understand that this was nearly impossible to avoid with the land used, but I would almost rather have seen it just be an 8 hole course to keep the safety of players in mind rather than how it currently plays. Basically, when you are playing hole 4, you are walking directly through hole 5’s fairway and then when you play hole 5, you are walking back through hole 4’s fairway. At something like a school course or private course, this wouldn’t be much of an issue but Tybee Island is a hugely touristy town and I would venture to guess that there are dozens of players per year that play this course for the first time and don’t exactly know that they are throwing through 5’s fairway on 4 until they get to 5’s tee. (Just checked on Udisc and there are close to 950 ratings on this course so this is definitely happening often) Yes, I do understand that a part of this is a responsibility of the player traveling through the area, but if you are anything like me, the round of disc golf was just a small added adventure to my family vacation, and I was playing quickly to get through the course and proceed to vacation. I was shocked when I stepped on 5’s tee and saw that I had just walked through (and played through) that exact path. This is just something that I don’t expect to occur on a public disc golf course. Other than that small hiccup on the course, I really enjoyed my round there. The only other issue would be that this seemed to be a popular park among locals, and you may have to wait a few times to tee like I did. I think I had 3 brief pauses in total to make sure no other park visitors were in danger of my awful drives. Haha! It is overall a really fun layout with some fun shot shapes. And if you are a nature guy like me, you will love this course because we saw wildlife everywhere! As a birder, I was happy to see a Red-Tailed Hawk soaring over the course and a Great Egret just walking through like it was home. When all is said and done, I would definitely play this course again if I find myself in the area again. The lighthouse basket feature was a nice touch as well, especially since you can see the Tybee lighthouse from the course! If you are in the area, definitely stop in to play this beautiful and fun little course. If you want to see this course on video, please consider checking out this video of my round on the course:
