Lake Marshall was the well deserved site of the 2019 Old Dominion Club Championships and my first trip here. It won't be my last. The Lair is an outstanding 18 wooded course with both excellent elevation and water hazards. Lambs is a far shorter layout but technically satisfying in all respects.


If you need to be convinced it is worth the drive to play here, you're probably not serious about challenging your disc golf game. If you think Mayflower in Roanoke, VA is the top dog in VA, you haven't played here at Lake Marshall. If you think any other course compares, well you're depriving others of an honest review. There is so much amazing disc golf at this magnificent property you can easily test every aspect of your game repeatedly and leave wanting nothing more than 18 hours of daylight to play until exhaustion.

The cherry on top. With permission from the owner and a modest fee, you may camp next to the lake. How can this not make for a destination course?

Great course. Well on its way to being one of the best courses, not just in Virginia, but the entire east coast. This course would be getting way more recognition a whole lot quicker if some clubs were a bit closer. It is definitely worth the drive. If you are making a trip north or south, this is the detour you need to take, just make sure you have an extra day in because it will take you that long to play all the holes. There are currently three courses which cover 34 holes.
9 hole Lambs. Short and technical, lots of elevation change. If you have a bad shot on 3 and 4 you could end up in the water. PAR 28.
12 hole Lions. Long and technical. Water, wind, and OB all come into play. This is the most open of the three courses, but do not let that fool you! Most challenging but most rewarding layout by far! The average hole length is over 600' with 3 over 900' and only 3 under 300'. 4 holes you have to throw over water. A double peninsula shot, A par 5 that no one has eagled from the pro layout that goes to an island, and a 900+ uphill shot that plays more like 1200', where if you walk away with a 5 it's a great day. This is my favorite layout. This course has made me into a better disc golfer for sure.
13 hole Lair. Long and technical. This course will make you pull out every shot in your arsenal. Hole 7, 8, and 9 will make or break your round. Water comes into play on a couple holes. Mostly it's you vs the woods.
The owner of the property is top notch as well as the people who are putting the course together. They are very accommodating. It is a pay to play. Memberships are available. If you want to take your game to the next level, I highly recommend getting out here.

This is currently my home course. I love it for the passion that is behind its owner, Gary Hutt. Gary wants to make Lake Marshall "The Augusta National of Disc Golf." With a man like this at the helm, there is much to be excited about at Lake Marshall.

LM is a Pay-to-Play course with memberships available. On the property there are plans for 3 full 18-hole courses. Each course is already underway.

-The Lambs Course is the shortest in length, designed with the beginner in mind. Still can challenge the touch shots of the most skilled golfer. The Lambs currently has 9 holes with one set of tees and comes in at 2749 ft in length.
-The Lair Course is a sneaky, tighter course with many wooded holes, with a few longer tees included. The Lair currently has 12 holes and comes in at 5035 ft from the shorts and 5247 ft from the longs.
-The Lions Course is the crown jewel of the Lake Marshal Complex. Designed for the big boys, The Lions course is not for the faint of heart, it is definitely for the hardcore disc golfer. With plans to be over 12,000 feet when all is said and done, The Lions course currently has 9 holes with two sets of tees on all holes (with the exception of holes 14 and 17) and comes in at 5521 ft from the shorts and 6059 ft from the longs.

I give this course a A- rating only because I know that the ceiling has not even been glanced at yet for what this course can become! Expect to hear many things from Lake Marshall in the future!

The Lion. Oh my. This is why you make the trip. No other course in Virginia compares. You just want to play and play until daylight runs out or you just become physically exhausted from trying to play too much. The Lion's layouts and challenges are simply spectacular. I can't wait to return to play some of the newly finished Lion holes.

If you come to play Lions, you'll be playing for a while. Very long course with the same elevation changes as Lair, but overall a more open course (still just as challenging as lair). My favorite holes are the Par 5 Hole 12 along the Lake Edge and then onto an island and Hole 16 507ft Par 4 along a casual relief stream in the woods. Good luck with those two!
