Fun, open course that has its' own unique challenges.
As far as I know, this course is the closest to the Gulf in Louisiana. Because of this it gets some of the most random weather out of all the other courses in the area. Most common weather out there is hot with some mild wind. Certain times of the year it can be cold, wet, and or windy. Majority of the year, the bugs can be god awful. The park sits between 2 sugar cane fields which house the bugs that can agitate your round. These are just some of the different course conditions that you could encounter when playing at Weeks Park.
Besides that, the course is not terribly difficult.
Each hole has Innova DisCatcher Pro's and concrete tee pads. Each hole has tee signs that are pretty accurate with the location of the hole, distance, and O.B. for that hole.
What's that you say...O.B.? Yes. And tons of it. There is O.B. on 17 out of the 18 holes. With extra O.B. on tournament days with the large ditch that stretches from 18's fairway all the way to 1's basket. It can be pretty miserable if the course has some water in there.
I am giving the course a C+ rating because it could be better with alternate tee and or pin positions for almost every hole. It could also use, if possible more amenities on the course. Trash cans would be nice and if possible, in the future, a bathroom or water fountains out on the course. I know that might not ever happen but I can keep on dreaming...
During those Louisiana summer rounds out there, the sun can beat up you and you would not even know that you are dehydrated until its too late.
Another reason for the C+ rating is not because of the course layout itself, but the elements of the course. The conditions the course could be in. The heat, the cold, the rain, the wind. Weeks Park does not drain well. So when it does rain, the course can stay damp longer than expected. Which is a bummer when planning out organized events out there.
When Weeks is in perfect playing conditions, i.e. the ground is dry, there is a light wind, the sun isn't being too mean that day, and you can make your putts! It is possible to shoot a very respectful score. At those times I would rate it closer to a B/B+. But those days are few an far between.
Hope this encourages people to go play this course when the conditions are less than ideal. A more challenging course can sometimes boost your game instead of putting it down.
