This course is better known as Stable Run and is a very solid course that offers simultaneously four very distinct course layouts using permanent long (Gold) and short (Red) tees and baskets - Gold tees to Gold baskets, Gold to Red, Red to Gold, and Red to Red.
The course offers a very technical front nine followed by a more open (still technical) back nine. The course contains technical aspects such as flowing water, thick brush and an abundance of trees that create challenging fairways. The Squaw Creek runs around the edge of the course and weighs in on the play of several holes. There are several holes that offer some tunnel shots depending on which layout is played. The course is maintained by ISU and does tighten up over the course of the summer.
The most unique aspect of Stable Run is its four layouts, each one offers unique layouts that will challenge players of all skill levels, even the Red to Red or "shorts" layout.
Stable Run is a gem course for anyone that enjoys a challenge (especially technical courses) and is worth a trip to Ames. It definitely deserves a high spot on anyone's top Iowa courses.
