A below average and fairly boring layout on bad "baskets." And it's not just that they're actually cones, which haven't been part of a real course in thirty years. They're not manufactured anymore, so they can't get new ones. So what's there is kludged together by whoever had the torch that weekend. And the locals don't help. They think they own the course and give a real "you don't belong here" vibe to anyone who doesn't practically live on the course. I tried giving it a shot when I was local, but it was worth the drive to Lakewood to not deal with that crap.

[TLDR: Fun 12-hole course that is pretty open, a few holes that are more technical, the baskets are terrible. Free] A course designed by the master designer Chuck Kennedy when disk first became a sport in the 70s, Hanson is old school. The course was made as a 12 hole course instead of a cramped 18 likely because of space restrictions and safety. It is mostly on open areas but runs through some woods here and there. The community does a great job of adding to the course with benches, brooms, and other things you don't usually see on a public course. Tee shots are usually just fine on poured concrete (save for the locally add "new" 12th and 13th holes which currently have natural tee pads) but when you get to the basket prepare to be disappointed. The upside down cone with basket underneath is horrible, and on most of the baskets the disk can fall right through. I have never heard any good justification for them, but hopefully someday can be replaced with the standard chain baskets, and really is why this course rates lower for me. I still play it often because its a good place to test out new disks and at the end of the day its still a disk golf course.

I've played here 3 times. This is the only course that has me wishing I was done by hole 7. I can't put a finger on what turns me off about this place. Maybe its the fact that it's in the middle of a bunch of people's backyards. Maybe it's the people running and walking the trails, watching me play. Maybe it's the fact that it's always packed with players.

The course itself, removing the exterior environment, it quite fun. There are short and long tees, and some pretty cool and unique terrains. My biggest technical gripe is that the pins are those "deflector" baskets, where you have to hit the head at a certain angle to deflect the disc down into the wire basket. IMO, adds unnecessary difficulty to the sport in general. I'm a disc golfer, not a mechanical engineer. I shouldn't have to do trigonometry to make a pin. Chain baskets are superior, however I can't get mad at a good old fashion metal pole pin.

Now, after my tangent is over, the pros/cons:

Pros:
+Quick games without traffic ~30-45 mins
+Good mix of challenges and terrains
+Recent maintenance adds nice tee platforms and markings.

Cons:
-Not private or secluded by any sense. Prepare to have an audience
-DEFLECTOR BASKETS
-Usually congested with players

Everyone that plays the course seems to throw from girl tees... just an observation I've made over the years. Play from the blue tees, its more of a challenge. Otherwise everything is 200ft or less.... not much of challenge birdie everything. That's to all you local Hansen players.

Good mix of elevation, risk/reward. Some holes can get technical. The cones alone keep me from playing this course on my own, even though it's reasonably close to me. One of my buddies loves this ... show more ›

The cones alone keep me from playing this course on my own, even though it's reasonably close to me. One of my buddies loves this course, I think because of nostalgia, and I can't say no to a round, anywhere. So, I go and whenever there's a cone target, I've learned to just layup and not even bother running a putt.

The first and last, but especially the last, hole can get kind of swampy if it's been raining at all, so bring your keens.

My first time playing here (5-4-14). Very nice for a free course! Some of the holes still have the old style baskets "like a cone turned upside down into a basket" which was fun to see and play - seems a bit harder to sink them. The course is confusing if you haven't played it before and I didn't see any directions (other than other players) to follow. It did present a bit of a challenge, but I didn't feel like I was going to lose a disc. I liked it and will return there again with other players new to the course.

If I was to review this course 2 years ago I would rate it a C-, the tees were dangerous and the place had no love. The past year the majority of the local crew who play here have done work, spread wood chips on fairways and near baskets, cleaned up trash to make this place what it is today, as well as landscaping with plants and rocks in various spots on holes 3, 7, 8, 9 where the city does not mow. There are more and more people playing Hansen all of the time now that it is nicer, its harder to get through in a half an hour now but at the same time the newer players are cleaning up after themselves and taking note from the work "The Friends of Hansen" have done.
