About this tournament

UPDATE: We have reached our original tournament capacity (48 people). We plan to open up more spots (maximum 72), so join the waitlist to secure your spot. Everyone will receive a disc in their player pack, however, we are unable to guarantee the original tournament stamp for players that register after the first 48.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the first annual Leaf Drop Doubles Disc Golf Tournament held at the Abbey Gardens Disc Golf Trail!

This is an unsanctioned fun and family-friendly tournament for new players.
Kids of all ages and parents are both able to register to play (as a team, or separately).
Registration includes a disc, so even if you have never played and need a disc, we will have one waiting for you (along with other fun goodies!) with your players pack at check-in.

Registration includes a play-all-day pass to the course, so any registered participants are welcome to arrive early (check-in anytime after 8:30 am) to play morning or evening rounds before and/or after your tournament round!

If you are brand new to the sport, from 9:00 am and on we will have people on-site to teach the rules, and offer tips on how to throw, and play a few practice holes with anyone that comes early. Experienced players are welcome to come early to play a practice round or join the newcomers to share knowledge and help introduce new players to the sport!

To make a team both players need to register individually and list their team name and the person they would like to play with. This allows for individuals to register and be paired up with other individuals. Note that you can register before having a team name and partner and return to edit your registration anytime before it closes (2 days before the event).

Categories:

BEG - Beginner - 18 holes from shorts
Ideal for those who have never played, or are still very new to the sport. We also have discs available at check-in for those who do not have their own. Please note in your registration that you want to borrow discs and we will accommodate on a first-come-first-served basis.

NOV - Novice - 18 holes from shorts
For players who are familiar with the sport, have developed some skills but are still honing technique, and are not competing in tournaments regularly.

INT - Intermediate -18 holes from longs
For players that are confident in their skills, and playing very regularly, including some tournaments. This tournament is not for super competitive players. It's for players that are happy to get out to play a fun round at a new course and enjoy the friendly atmosphere without being too focused on their score.

About the Abbey Gardens property:

While we are proud of the Disc Golf Trail, Abbey Gardens has so much more to offer. This 300+ acre property is a reclaimed gravel pit turned not-for-profit charity that provides opportunities for our community through green energy initiatives (Haliburton Solar & Wind), local food and beverage offerings (grown on-site and sourced locally) at the Food Hub and Haliburton Highlands Brewing.
It also offers educational resources with interpretive trails, gardens (which supply local food), heritage breeds, programming and event spaces, and
more.

Proceeds from the Leaf Drop Tournament will support the Abbey Retreat Centre, also a part of the Abbey Gardens property. The Centre supports people living with a cancer
diagnosis by providing a variety of in-person and online retreats and programs for those with cancer and their loved ones. Their retreats and programs serve those in the Haliburton Highlands area as well as people across Ontario. All are offered at no cost to participants, recognizing there are already many increased expenses for individuals and families facing cancer. All raffle tickets, hole sponsorship, and mulligan fees collected will also be donated to Abbey Retreat Centre.

Raffle details:
All tournament participants will automatically be entered into the raffle. However, additional raffle tickets will be available at registration and on-site with all the proceeds going towards the Abbey Retreat Centre. We are still accepting prize donations for the prize raffle so if you are willing to donate to the prize table, please let us know!

Volunteers:
If you know any volunteers (can be teenagers looking for community service hours), please register them (free) and let us know their availability throughout the day. Any player that registers a volunteer gets a free mulligan to use during the tournament.

Mulligans:
Players may purchase a mulligan at registration to be used during the tournament. All proceeds go to the Abbey Retreat Centre.

Ace pool: In the case of multiple aces, players split the pool. If no one aces, a throwing contest will determine the winner.

FAQ
What if I’ve never played disc golf before?
Great. Learn to play with us! You can sign in early and get your player pack that includes your own disc to keep and a day pass to the course (along with other fun goodies!). We can give you a bit of instruction before you try a few holes or warm up at the practice basket. You can join the beginners tier, play from the short tees and try your best. This tournament was put together to introduce new players to the sport and the friendly disc golf community.

What if I’ve played before and wouldn’t consider myself a beginner?
Awesome! Bring your discs and talent to the novice or Intermediate division and play from the short or long tees against some other players near your skill level. Maybe even show up early and share some of your tips with our new players!

What if I’m a very talented and competitive disc golfer and the only reason I enter tournaments is to get first place?
This is not the tournament for you. Abbey Gardens Disc Golf Trail will hold more competitive tournaments for more highly ranked players in the future so keep an eye out for those and we will be happy to have you then. In the meantime, if you are willing to play a more recreational tournament on a beautiful course, share some of your experience and be a good representative of the fun, supportive disc golf community, we would love for you to sign up!
