About this tournament
1 round of play
Hello and welcome to the Freeland Open.
My name is Chris DeRosier and I own My Boy Chris's Disc Golf Shop.
This tournament has been established for over a decade and I have been running it for the past 4 years.
The Freeland Open returned as a Michigan State Feature Event last year. Since this tournament is a 2023 State Feature Gold Event, there are a total of 24 state championship berths available (12 each day).
Berths will be awarded to any amateur division that has 3 or more competitors. The remaining berths will be distributed among the amateur divisions based on participation.
These berths are awarded for winning your division. If the winner of the division already has a state berth, the berth will be moved down to the next place competitor. These berths are your ticket to be able to register into the Michigan Amateur Disc Golf State Championships. The berths cannot be returned, exchanged, or shared.
This is a PDGA B Tier event, so a PDGA player identification number is required to register.
The event is sponsored by Discraft, and all amateur payouts will be in Discraft Plastic.
There is $750 added cash across all pro divisions.
Amateur Player Pack: Each amateur player will receive 1 tournament stamped Premium
Plastic disc from Discraft. There will be several molds available. The discs are first come first serve as far as selection.
Jeanos 989 Food Truck will be available for lunch.
There are on site bathrooms near the pavilions, as well as porta johns in different areas of the parking lot.
This tournament will feature many CTPs available to anyone registered for the event and a few that are an optional buy in.
For Everyone:
Hole 2 - Free Oil Change from Deals on Deals automotive repair in Bay City.
Hole 5 - Free MVP haircut (Cut, Wash, Hot towel, Shoulder massage) from Sport Clips of Midland.
Hole 6 - 1 lb. bag of freshly ground coffee from Creation Coffee of Midland.
Hole 15 - Bounty Ace Hole - Ace hole 15 and get a 5G bar of silver worth $140 sponsored by K ZOO Bullion of Midland.
Hole 17 - Women Only CTP worth $20 of store credit for My Boy Chris's Disc Golf Shop.
Optional Buy In:
Hole 4 - 50/50 $$ CTP Sponsored by Jeff Coates of REMAX of Midland.
Hole 11 - Ace Pool CTP in case no ace is hit.
There will be an onsite Basket Raffle for a Chainstar. Each Ticket will be $5. The raffle will be drawn on Day 2. Each raffle entry should have your name and a good contact number on the ticket.
Now that we have discussed Players Packs, Prizes, CTPs, and the Raffle, lets discuss Layouts, OB, and Mandos.
Layouts:
If 84 or less players sign up for the day, we will be playing 1-18 plus B, C, and F. If we exceed 84 players, we will expand registration to 96 players and play all 24 holes (1-18 and A-F).
MPO/FPO - Long Tees on holes 1, 3, 8, and 16.
MA2/FA1/FA2 - Short 1, Long 3, Short 8, and Long 16.
MA3/MA4/FA3/FA4 - Short Tees on holes 1, 3, 8, and 16.
*All other holes only have 1 tee pad.
OBs and Mandos:
Hole 1 - Mando right of the tree that is directly behind the Mando sign. There will be a drop zone.
Hole 2 – Pond
Hole 3 – Pond
Hole A – None
Hole 4 – Island Hole that will be marked with string. Everything outside of the island is OB. There will be a drop zone approximately 20 ft from the basket. If you throw OB, there is no re-tee option. You must proceed to the drop zone. If your disc lands with any part of the disc inside the island you are putting for birdie. All divisions will play this as an island hole.
Hole 5 – Stream
Hole B – Stream
Hole C – Stream
Hole 6 – None
Hole 7 – None
Hole D – This is our signature hole of the course. It is a very challenging hole. The basket for this hole is located 15 ft in the air, braced inside of a tree. There is a wooden ladder on the opposite side of the tree to retrieve your discs from the basket.
Hole E – None
Hole 8 – None
Hole 9 – None
Hole F – None
Hole 10 – Pond and streams on either side of the fairway
Hole 11 – None, but I feel it deserves special mention. If your disc goes too far left in the cattails, there may be standing water depending on the weather. It will not be OB as long as it is recoverable, and your next throw comes from your marked lie. You will have the re-tee option for this hole.
Hole 12 – Small stream left of the basket, down the hill, and railroad tracks.
Hole 13 – Railroad tracks
Hole 14 – None
Hole 15 – None
Hole 16 – None
Hole 17 - Mando left of the tree directly behind the Mando sign. There will be a drop zone.
Hole 18 - None
If either of the Mandos are missed, there will be a 1 stroke penalty and a drop zone marked to the side of the Mando.
OB water: You must be completely surrounded by water and will receive a 1 stroke penalty. If your disc lands with any part of the disc touching land you are safe. If you cross over a stream and are not in the stream you are safe. There are some standing water spots depending on weather that may be mistook as OB. The OB water you will find on the course will be very obvious.
Railroad tracks: Any disc that crosses the first rail of the railroad tracks will be considered OB. The next lie will be played in bounds from the point it crossed OB with a 1 stroke penalty.
Thank you for sticking with me for that long tournament briefing!
I would like to give one last shoutout and huge THANK YOU to our sponsors!
