Looking to scratch that itch of playing competitive disc golf? Trying to do so while maintaining best safety practices during the coronavirus pandemic? This event is for you.

During a summer with limited sanctioned events, the CNYDGA board is following the lead of our friends at Westchester Disc Golf Enthusiasts and launching a match play tournament at Clay Park.

The weeks-long event will feature head-to-head competition against players of your skill level, the comfort of playing with only one other person at a time, and the chance to a win big money (really big money if a lot of you sign up).

HOW IT WORKS

Every paid entrant will be placed in a double-elimination bracket. There will be at least three pools (A, B, women's), possibly four if we get enough players (eight) for a C pool. Players will be assigned to a pool by the CNYDGA board and brackets will be built using an online random number generator. That means everyone will play at least two matches.

A pool is for open and advanced players, B pool is for intermediate players, and C pool is for recreational players. If the women’s pool does not reach eight players, we’ll offer that group the option of switching to a round-robin format (everyone plays everyone else once) with a championship match.

Matches can be played any time, though a suggested timeframe is outlined below for each round. You do not need to live locally to participate, but you need to be reasonably available to play at Clay.

EVENT SCHEDULE

Four different layouts at Clay Park will be utilized.

Course 1: Clay East
Course 2: Clay West
Course 3: Clay West 6-14, Clay East 10-18
Course 4: Clay West 1-4, Clay East 3-9, Clay West 7, 8, 13, 15-18

That 1-4 order will be repeated through the finals for C and women’s pool. A and B pool will follow that pattern until a potential everything-on-the-line championship match. For this to occur, the winner of the “loser’s bracket” in that pool will have to beat the winner of the “winner’s bracket” once already. Remember, this is a double-elimination event.

In the case of that title grudge match in A and/or B pool, the final match will consist of all 36 holes (West 1-10, East 1-18, West 11-18).

HOW MUCH?

$25 gets you into the event. $20 goes straight to payout for your pool, $2.50 goes to ace pot and $2.50 goes to the club fund.

For those unfamiliar, the club fund is controlled by the current CNYDGA board. All of that money will be put back into growing our community.

The top four finishers from each pool will be paid out. First place gets 50 percent of the pool's payout purse. Second place gets two-thirds of the remaining purse minus $20. Third place gets one-third of the remaining purse. Fourth place gets $20 plus $20 in credit to the CNYDGA store.

Example: 20 players in a pool = $400 payout purse

Winner: $200
Runner-up: $113
Third place: $67
Fourth place: $20 plus $20 CNYDGA store credit

For reference, WeDGE has 46 players in B pool so some lucky intermediate-level player is going to pocket $460.

The ace pot applies to the whole field. It is not divided by pool. If multiple aces are hit, that sum will be split evenly between all people who hit an ace. If no aces are hit, we'll do a raffle after the event with every entrant getting one ticket.

Round 2 matches should be completed by July 26
Round 3 matches should be completed by Aug. 3
Round 4 matches should be completed by Aug. 10
Round 5 matches should be completed by Aug. 17
Round 6 matches should be completed by Aug. 24

Again: You can play multiple matches in a week. If both players are ready to go, there's no need to wait. Please, everyone, be reasonable in making yourself available to play. If something unexpected comes up and you need an extra day or two, send me a private message. But if you’ll be out of town for three straight weeks, this probably isn’t the event for you.

MATCH PLAY RULES

For those unfamiliar, match play is different from stroke play -- the standard format you’ve probably played in casual rounds, leagues and tournaments. The objective in match play is to win more holes than your opponent.

In my experience, I’ve found match play produces closer contests than stroke play and, honestly, is more fun. A one- or two-hole blowup isn’t as costly, and strategy comes into play. When do you act aggressively and when do you lay up? Truly, anything can happen in this format. If you’re on the fence, I highly encourage you to give it a shot.

The PDGA has a thorough outline of match play rules and scoring here: https://www.pdga.com/ru…/official-rules-disc-golf/appendix-a

Players in the Clay Park Match Play Tournament have the option to continue their contest after a victory is clinched (i.e. Stephen is beating Brad by seven holes with six to play). Remember, there’s an ace pot to be won.

If a round ends in a tie, the two players go back to the first hole of that layout and continue until someone wins a hole.

I'm glad to answer any questions you have. All you need to do is ask.

REPORTING SCORES

Please send a picture of the scorecard to Stephen Bailey immediately after the completion of your match. This can be done directly through Facebook messenger. After the result is verified, the online bracket will be updated.

CNYDGA TAGS

Club competition tags are not automatically on the line for these matches. However, players can choose to put them up if both competitors agree.
