The answer to this question is strictly personal preference.
The black series are more like league tournaments, mostly fun with a chance for great prizes and some money winnings as well.
The platinum series is more reminiscent of the PDGA pro tournaments. This is where you'll find PDGA sanctioned events, strong tournament purses, fierce competition and pro quality prizes. Because the winnings are so strong in the platinum series, you can expect higher than normal entry fees.
The gold series falls somewhere in the middle. This will be for players who want the fun of the black series, but want better winnings. Consequently, enlarging the purses does cause a higher entry fee, but can prove to be much more affordable than the platinum series.
Most players graduate to platinum from the gold series, after their gold winnings allow them to obtain sponsorships and better afford entry fees. Also, most gold players graduate from the black series. upgrading a tour card from one level to another has a lower cost associated than buying a card outright. Paying full price for a public challenge automatically enters you into the black series, and after the event, the card can then be upgraded for the associated fee.
All in all it is always better to play in one of the public challenges to obtain your tour card than it is to buy one direct.
Remember: The more players in the challenge, the better the prizes, so tell your friends.
