Very good question. Sorry I don't have a great answer for you yet. As you point out there is no fee and so there is almost no money to work with but the bragging rights are huge ;-) Michigan Disc Golf League Cooperative Point Series Champion - well it's long if nothing else - State Disc Golf League Champion for short.
We have tried having a Finale to be able to generate some money in a few ways reg fees, merch, side games...but this has not panned out well and is being reworked to see what can be improved. We tried MiCPS shirts to generate some money and we have almost covered the cost of the order with a few 2010 shirts left. Have thought about MiCPS discs as a fund raiser and this hopefully will move forward. A league fee or membership has been suggested in the past. If we hit 1000 players even $1 per player would help but it is also great to have a free league out there to get as many players and leagues involved as possible.
There is also a few discussions about a worthy perpetual trophy to have on display and a smaller one for the winner(s) but this is just in discussion phase at this point - more suggestions welcomed - especially from trophy craftsmen out there.
What ideas do you have? What would you like to see done and any ideas for how to fund it? The two part of that question go together as we have to find a way to fund what ever it is we do but it all starts with dreaming about what players would like to see. What is worthy of a State wide Disc Golf League Champion and all the efforts that each player has put into the season?
As this grows the possibilities also grow. Our focus so far has been on trying to improve the core aspects of the Point Series, get as many leagues and players involved so everyone gain experience with it and we all can help it grow - just like you question here helps us discuss this topic. We are always looking for ways to increase the awards and offerings to the players without impacting their wallets and purses directly. This is one of the great aspects of the cooperative nature of this and in connecting as many creative and diversified players - new ideas and new opportunities come up more and more. Let us hear any ideas you have and everyone can chime in with their ideas or dreams.
My current dreams - A big beautiful perpetual trophy on display with the names of the top players from each season to be added to each season for all to see for years to come. With smaller replicas for the top winners to have for their trophy case to go along with a worth purse of CA$H. How about a Car for the winner. Sounds a bit out there but I recall reading about the early Disc events and I believe in Cali or New York the LC was a used car dealer and gave away a car - used but it was something different...
I also would like to see more recognition for more player and their achievements throughout the season or sub-categories. Who will win the most HLWs this season? - who is going to travel and play to the most courses/leagues this season? Who will play or win the most league rounds in a given week or month...... Pete had this idea and is working on improving the DGS achievements. More Bling for your profile...
