On the nicest day of the year so far we had 34 players show up for the Sunnybrook Indoor Putting league. We tried to separate the players into A and B pool’s which made the teams a little more competitive. At least that was my opinion. We paid out 5 spots and I think most people had fun. If this format worked well for the masses I think we will keep it the same for next week.

Thanks to Josh Schulte we had 8 good baskets.

Also, Dustin Hart made a copy of the key and has been getting to Sunnybrook around 4:00 pm setting up the place and getting in some practice. If anyone gets there early they can help Dustin get the place set up and maybe get in some side games while you’re at it. Thank you Dustin!

We had the biggest field to date and yet things still ran relatively smooth. Apparently, Sunnybrook has 9 Beer Towers and 5 of them were in our region of the building. Well Done! There were only about 5 or 6 teams posted so we will be running the same format as this past week however, I am toying with the idea of introducing an A and a B pool which may make the teams a little more competitive. Any thoughts?

The Excel file was a tremendous improvement. All 4 games were completed by 8 pm and the playoff brackets and 8 team brackets worked just as well. We were close to having jams playing and should have that fixed by next week. The Beer Towers were a common sight behind the scorer’s tables so it would appear that we are settling in with a good format. Now, if we can only get the Championship match played in the bar…

A recap of this past Monday’s Indoor Putting event at Sunnybrook:

We increased players from 26 to 38 for a much bigger field than last week. The PowerPoint was OK at best but Excel might be better and is already being created. Excel is more intuitive and one edit affects multiple sheets which will speed up the “who is on what court and when” issues. The TV and Laptop were enhancements that complete the technology segment. The scoring system, specifically no pushes, was much better speeding up games which caused a negative domino effect. Players who ... more

We increased players from 26 to 38 for a much bigger field than last week.

Players who thought they had more time between games were unavailable (wink, wink) when they should have been playing on unoccupied courts. This happened a lot and caused many delays.
However, with a field of this size on a small venue, there are still areas we will tweak.

1st Night was a huge success minus the growing pains...

A Big Thank you goes out to Sunnybrook Bowling Alley for providing the facility and Pete Starver for bringing the idea to me. Brian Shevela and Rooster were instrumental in organizing the brackets and keeping people playing so a H U G E thanks goes out to these two. Also, a few others to thank were Bernie and Kurt Maty for providing additional baskets. So, we had 4 Horseshoe Pits set up with the baskets 30 feet apart. 26 players showed up on the maiden voyage making 13 teams. We ran 8 teams while 7 teams sat out then ran 6 teams after the 1st 7 finished and the remaining single team played a ghost team for competition. Confusing, yes, but it ran very smooth.

Games were played to 13 (must win by two) and the margin of victory was recorded per round. In total, everyone played 4 rounds so the final tally looked like this:

I think most people had fun. The beer was flowing well and the staff did their best to keep up with us. The radio could have been better but they offered to let us bring in our own CDs to listen to and they will play them for us. ESPN was showing Super Bowl highlights on the big screen but I do not think anyone cared. Maybe next week we cut games off at 11 points and count all scores even if the throw is a push. For example, if Team A made 1 basket and Team B made 1 basket we considered this a push making the games last longer. Maybe next week we count them as each team getting 1 point. I now officially turn the discussion over to everyone on how to make this even better next week.
The plan was to go from 6 pm – 8 pm.
We started around 6:25 pm and ended up around 10:00 pm. Woot!

Horeshoes and Around the World...

You should now be able to use this Board to post messages. Initially, the games we might be playing for points are Horseshoes and a version of Pozzy Putting. We'll set up the baskets once we arrive and take it from there.

Sunnybrook Indoor Putting

Introducing a new weekly league that will run through the end of March. This league may turn into more in the Fall if it goes well. It will NOT be played at River Bends like it says but I listed River Bends because it is the closest course to our venue. The league will be played at Sunnybrook Bowling Alley / Golf Course. The facility has a sizeable banquet room in the back where we can set up baskets and play a variety of formats like horseshoes as a doubles - type format or have people sho ... more

The league will be played at Sunnybrook Bowling Alley / Golf Course. The facility has a sizeable banquet room in the back where we can set up baskets and play a variety of formats like horseshoes as a doubles - type format or have people shooting at a single basket from various spots in the room, each spot worth points based off of difficulty and distance. For any doubles formats we will have people flip for partners.

Sunnybrook Bowling Alley / Golf Course is located in Sterling Heights, Michigan on the north side of 17 Mile Road just west of Van Dyke. The banquet room is in the back. When entering the facility please walk directly into the bar, order a drink or two at the end of the bar, then exit out of the right side of the back of the bar and make an immediate left into the putting palace.

The venue has lots of beer and liquor. we will have tables, chairs, waitresses, maybe be able to watch sports on TV - all of the details are being worked out now.
