NFGA June 12, 2013 Summer SC Round One Summary

Duluth, GA USA (AP) – With the lowest participation in Surgeon’s Cup history, three players turned out for the first of three rounds in the NFGA 2013 Surgeon’s Cup Summer Series. In order to accommodate known scheduling conflicts, the Cup is being played out over three consecutive Wednesdays instead of the normal two. While allowing more players to participate, the format, gives any player who is able to make all three rounds a distinct advantage as they will have the ability to discount their highest round.

Wednesday’s round started with Sammy Jackson- taking advantage of some first hole strategic and preferential tree pruning - hitting a towering drive that passed the hole and crossed into the second fairway. Missing his second shot, he was in at par with Robby Morgan hitting a long putt for the first bird of the round and Wayne Russell tapping in at par. Jackson then hit birds on both two and three setting the stage for a two stroke lead at the turn.

Heading into ten, and just like last week, the sky let loose with a torrential downpour to dampen play on the back. Grip slippage started costing the group strokes as Jackson lost one to both competitors with a par on eleven. Everyone bogeyed twelve while Morgan slipped into a par on the par 5 thirteen.

As the group headed down “The Trail,” the rains ceased and after searching all available orifices, neither Russell nor Morgan could pull a bird out of any of them. In the mean time, Jackson found his grip and threw three birds in a row.

Everyone made their expected eagles on seventeen and birds on eighteen putting round one on the books.

So, with Morgan scheduled to miss next week, only two players will have the advantage of possibly playing three rounds. And while it isn't likely to matter to one, the other is the current Cup holder and Summer Series leader by 5 strokes.

Can anyone stop the Jackson dominance of this league? With a lifetime highest round of only five under (-5), a lifetime average of eleven under (-11), a season best of fifteen under (-15) and a league record nineteen under (-19), it will not be a task for the weak. History shows that if someone does not step up with at least an eleven or twelve under during next Wednesday’s round, this one “likely” belongs again to Sammy.

Introducing NFGA May Madness and Alumni Recruiting

Coincident with the first round on the first day of May, the NFGA is proud to announce its May Madness event. With five (5) potential rounds to play in May we are changing it up a bit. Coincident with the first round on the first day of May, the NFGA is proud to announce its May Madness event.

With five (5) potential rounds to play in May we are changing it up a bit.

At stake are two official, customized NFGA 2013 micro fiber disc towels. Though it has not been seen this season, it should be noted that there is only one such towel in existence today!

One towel will be awarded to the 2013 regular participant who brings the most new players or recruited alumni players out in May. A regular participant is anyone who has played this season. One point will be awarded for each round a sponsored new or alumni player plays during the month. In the event of a tie, the towel will be divided into equal parts.

The second towel will be awarded to the current or alumni player who scores the best round during the month as compared to his all time course average. As an example, if Schneider were to shoot a 68 (-4) he would obtain a score of one (1) point since four under is one stroke better than his all time average of three under. If MaT were to shoot a 60 (-12) he would also obtain one point since his performance objective is (-11). Only the single best round during the month will be counted for anyone who plays. In the event of a tie, a playoff will be held between holes 3 and 18 as per normal playoff criteria at a time when all tied players are present.

Additionally (and dependent upon committee approval) all play in May will be played on a “twisted” version of the course. All holes will be played as normal however, after the first hole, play will turn to the back and the normal fourth hole will be played second followed by the rest of the normal course. Then, after the seventeenth hole, play will continue down the course to the normal hole two (2), back up to three (3) and finally eighteen (18).

While not changing the actual course layout, this change in the order of play will introduce a new strategy and level of excitement to the end of play. Adding two potential but difficult birdie holes in between seventeen (17) and eighteen (18) will definitely add an extra twist to the end of the round.

Additionally, having four holes as opposed to two for the Clubhouse leg of the round will allow us to collect a premium over normal Clubhouse Level gallery ticket prices.

Polish your taunt, call your buddies and let’s have a kick ass May in the NFGA!

It was brought to my attention (from one of the more astute NFGA members) that Kim Jong Un, not Kim Jong Il is the current leader of North Korea. It was brought to my attention (from one of the more astute NFGA members) that Kim Jong Un, not Kim Jong Il is the current leader of North Korea.

While any feedback from this group is appreciated but totally unexpected, I must confirm my statement while attempting not to offend the intelligence of the individual who brought this to my attention.

Kim Jong Un (Romanized spelling) is the current leader of North Korea after his father’s (Kim Jong Il) passing in 2011.

Additionally, rhetoric is defined as “complex or elaborate language that only succeeds in sounding pretentious.” Kim Jong Il frequently used rhetoric and changed it even more frequently which was subsequently called out by his international counterparts as "popping off" and "saber rattling." Hence, my reference to “fluctuating rhetoric” by Kim Jong Il.

On the other hand, Kim Jong Un has not “fluctuated” and has only issued statements that are (so far) in line with his original intent to start a conflict with the US and/or its allies.

Qualified member comments are more than welcome but not at all expected.

NFGA April 10, 2013 Round 5 Summary

While there was a bit of controversy during the one and only playoff hole, the evidence has been evaluated and the standings are final. Sammy and Robby tied in regulation and Sammy won the first playoff hole. Brad took third, Travis fourth and Justin rounded out the group. Four of the players finally broke through their “average round” ceiling which was in a large part due to their review of the NFGA 2013 Promo video and the taunt that it depicted. While it is still early, Travis leads the league with the new Performance Based scoring format. While he can lavish in his lead, we all need to remember that once we have our eleventh rounds under our belts, the rankings will start fluctuating like the rhetoric of Kim Jong Il.

NFGA April 3, 2013 Round 4 Summary

Sammy now owns the seasonal course record by hitting his three year average of eleven under (-11). BOB was back, and finished second at seven under (-7) while Justin H nailed third with his best round to date at six under (-6). Not to put any undue pressure there, but this the third round over round improvement for Justin. Wayne and Robby rounded out the group at five under (-5). A Postal Service medallion was picked up by BOB on 4 which was immediately followed by Wayne with an Automobile Association medallion on five.

And then there was the anomaly of all anomalies when, on seventeen, Robby stepped up to the tee and threw his disc into pieces! Talk about arm speed! No, it did not hit anything – it just came apart in the air as soon as it was released. No sonic boom, no crack, no nothing; just the Frisbee breaking into two halves and fluttering to the ground; one piece on the fairway and the other in the right rough. And you think the meteorite over Russia was something!

Robby was so stunned by the event, he was not able to finish the round and had to settle with the five under (-5) he had obtained after sixteen holes. Pictures and video are on record and will be published soon on the Disc Golf Scene web site under the NFGA 2013 League section.

NFGA March 27, 2013 Round 3 Summary

While the weather was a bit less cruel this night, three men came out to play and the scoring continues to be low. The Old Man took it again; but only after a one hole play-off with Justin H and only with a four under (-4) score. I am sure there were some great dinners provided by the ladies in the league while these three men stood up and played tonight. The Old Man took it again; but only after a one hole play-off with Justin H and only with a four under (-4) score.

I am sure there were some great dinners provided by the ladies in the league while these three men stood up and played tonight.

While the scores were low, and there were some close calls, there were no medallions earned.

March 20, 2013 Round Summary

It was still windy enough to keep anyone from reaching 18 from the tee. Other than that, it was a beautiful afternoon for Frisbee Golf on the Old Peachtree Walk. Four players came out to play this afternoon which would see a new season course record set by The Old Man who had his putting working for a change. It was still windy enough to keep anyone from reaching 18 from the tee. Other than that, it was a beautiful afternoon for Frisbee Golf on the Old Peachtree Walk.

Four players came out to play this afternoon which would see a new season course record set by The Old Man who had his putting working for a change. Even with a few bogies thrown in, he still held the lead from the first hole throughout the rest of the round.

Yes, there were challenges from the regular “players” but the season was too early for them to get it on; and the Old Man finished it up at ten under (-10). While no one expects that to last long, it is the current season best and the Old Man is relishing in it!

Robby made his first appearance and behold, he too has a yellow disc. This is a first for the league with both Sammy and Robby throwing first ever colors on the course.

Thanks to the wind, the Ace Pool grew to $15 US and Wayne collected a Postal Service medallion on 12.

March 13 Round Medallions

Forgot to mention an earned medallion for the round.

Brad was thought to have taken an Automobile Association on 12 however a check of the rules showed that tire hits do not earn a medal.

Justin H scored his first ever medallion with a Postal Service on 14.

NFGA Round Summary March 13, 2012

It was the first round of the season and just how windy was it? Let’s just say the round was won at six under (-6) and no one, and I mean no one, reached 18 from the tee! Maybe you have to have played this course to know what that means! And it was cold and no one really warmed up and . . . and . . . and! It was the first round of the season and just how windy was it? Let’s just say the round was won at six under (-6) and no one, and I mean no one, reached 18 from the tee! Maybe you have to have played this course to know what that means!

And it was cold and no one really warmed up and . . . and . . . and!

And yes, Travis was in the lead as the group of six headed down the Trail, named in his honor. And no, I don’t think he took any calls once he was in the lead.

Clearly, some people have practiced throwing the Ultimate plastic over the off season; and clearly, this season is going to play out a bit different than past seasons.

Of course, we still have our current Surgeons’ Cup holder - on his game with a new disc that brings some new color to the league. Once he got it working, it was charming to watch. Congratulations to Sammy, followed by Travis and Brad in second and third place.

It was still overall, a pretty tight grouping with two boys, Wayne and BOB, falling far out of style in mustering only pars for the round. Yes, that is correct; par 72s, the highest recorded rounds ever for either boy!

So, Sammy keeps on keeping on, Travis has stepped up - and if he can stay off the phone early - may challenge the league. Then you have Brad who walks past his throw 3 times out of 10 but recorded a very nice third place this round. And where can the two boys go but up from where they finished.

It should be interesting to see how it all plays out. Maybe next round will not be played in a wind tunnel and the true games - that we will see 90% of the time - will be revealed.
