DFOK will be hosting a weekly Triples League the month of August

When: Thursdays at 5:45. (Yes, Thursday not Wednesday | 5:45 because the days are getting shorter)

Where: Fairmont Park

Format: You and two randomly selected teammates will play best disc against the other teams. The twist is that the putt must be validated. To “hole out”, two members of the team must make the putt.

is this a free league?

Mark Kewley   August 3 at 9:14pm

This league is free. It is all about having a good time and meeting other local disc golfers. The group can do CTP holes as they see fit.

Please keep DFOK going strong!

Hey, Kansas Disc Fanatics, This is Jon, writing to let you all know I'm moving to Pennsylvania at the beginning of August. Sorry about the short notice, but my plans have only come into focus in the last couple of weeks. I have really enjoyed being involved with DFOK and getting to know all of you. Before DFOK, I played mostly alone, and the camaraderie has made the game much more fun, and improved my skills a lot. Thanks for all the kind words and positive vibes. I will definitely miss my DFOK friends. Rick, did you have a particular stump in mind?

Rick Petrie   August 2 at 8:08pm

Jon, It's the "ramp" shaped stump on #2 that we left in place intentionally (dumb idea by me). Don't worry about it though, it was more of a joke than anything else. Plus I've had a week full of heavy travels & family stuff. . . putting disc way on the back burner.

Hopefully I can catch up to you before you leave. If not, I'll get to PA sometime.

Fairmont Park

I forgot to mention this at league:

Tomorrow, Monday the 20th will be a workday at Fairmont. I know this is short notice. Rick & I talked at work this week about cleaning some things up for the Ice Bowl / Fairmont Disc Golf Course Expansion Dedication on February 22nd.

If you can help, please join us 10:00 - 2:00. We will be cleaning up holes 2 & 7.

If enough people show up, we could move some baskets too.

Even though the severe weather warning officially starts later in the day http://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?warnzone=KSZ022&warncounty=KSC161&firewxzone=KSZ022&local_place1=8+Miles+E+Riley+KS&product1=Wind+Chill+Warning#.Usl8UjiA3cs , it is still going to be around -5 wind chill at 1:30.

I would suggest skipping bag tag & points league this week for safety. What do you think?

DFOK Fairmont Workday, Saturday Dec. 14th

Mark your calendars for Saturday Dec. 14th, from 9am until late afternoon, for a chance to further enhance the Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course. Rainy Day = Continued Progress at Fairmont

Shout out to Alan Fox for his time & effort spent at Fairmont Park today.

As part of the Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course Expansion project, a third (long) pin placement was installed on fairway #6. However, prior to today it was not playable due to a few nasty brush piles that needed to be removed.

Fairmont Design - Weekly Concept Courses

In order to maximize the number of conceptual layouts we can “test” on site, earlier today I obtained permission from Riley County to move forward in a different manner than we have been. Assuming more layouts are forthcoming from players, the following change in our process is going to be implemented. This basic process worked well to design the existing Warner Park course and should work well at Fairmont Park too. Especially if people submit their concepts in time to be installed for te ... more

Fairmont Design Day Reminder

Despite the overnight rain, and continued overcast weather, today's Design Day is still scheduled to take place today (Jan. 27th).

So, please consider coming out to Fairmont Park and help us consider multiple course expansion options. It is an "open house" style event, so feel free to come & go as you wish throughout the afternoon as there will be a temp course layout set-up all afternoon.

See you soon.

Rick

P.S. If you cannot attend today's event, stay posted here to find out when the next "Design Day" will take place.

Glow League Update

Since the Glow League is all about having fun, the group had a discussion tonight about what weather conditions are not fun.

It was decided that if the wind chill is below 0 degrees Fahrenheit we will pass on the golf. In addition rain or freezing rain cancels glow league because neither one are fun when it is dark and cold.

Snow is ok. It should be really fun in the snow.

If in doubt, check Disc Golf Scene. If league is canceled it will be on the DFOK talk page by 5:00pm.

Disc Golf in K-State Newspaper

Last nights Warner Wednesday drew the attention of more than just disc golfers. The Kansas State Collegian, which is the K-State student newspaper, sent Evert Nelson to Warner Park to cover our sport. The result was a nice looking disc golf reference across the top of the front page, plus a full page spread in the middle of the paper. To summarize, the K-State Collegian writer/photographer followed Mr. Clouse, Mr. Carroll & Mr. Mathewson for part of their round, plus added some informatio ... more

New Mowing Pattern at Warner Park!

If you happened to play Warner Park yesterday, this may be old news. Otherwise you're going to want to keep reading. The SHORT version is as follows: YESTERDAY, the City of Manhattan Parks & Rec. department mowed a large part of the Warner Park disc golf course. No, not all the tall grass has been cut. However, a substantial volume of it is gone. Mark and I were involved in getting this done so we're sure you'll like the improvements. The LONG version is as follows: As you may know, unti ... more

Mayors Award for Disc Golf - Tues, Aug. 2nd at 7pm - 1101 Poyntz Ave.

I apologize if this comes across as Mark and I just self promoting, patting ourselves on the back, etc. We decided to accept this award because we thought it would improve our chances of getting the "next nine" rolling at Warner Park. More specifically, our reason for posting this on DiscGolfScene.com is to try to get as many disc golfers as possible to attend this meeting to show their support for Disc Golf in Warner Park. We have a good thing going right now, with all the right people on b ... more

Community Service Award = Positive Publicity for Warner Park Course

On July 28, 2011, Mark Kewley and I found out that we had been nominated for, and have been selected to receive, a Community Service Award from the City of Manhattan, KS. We will be receiving this award because of all the volunteer work we put into proposing, fund raising, designing, installing, maintaining, etc. the Warner Park disc golf course. Mark and I are looking at this award in a broader sense. More specifically, we're looking at it as an indication that the Warner Park Disc Golf Co ... more

Today's Weather Situation 5/11 (waiting it out)

Just in case you did not know, we are currently in a Severe Thunderstorm WATCH, until 5pm this evening.

SO,

If it is allowed to expire at 5pm, and there are no new WATCHES or WARNINGS, we will play a full 18 (provided it's not too dark to see). Yes, even if is raining.

If they extend the WATCH past 5:30, we will only play 9 tonight.

If they issue a WARNING, tonight's round will be completely CANCELED!

Terrific Tuttle Tuesday

The weather was terrific, the competition was torrid! Ten players attended this week’s Tuttle Tuesday. Yes that means there were five doubles teams. For many it was their first round of doubles play for the season, but you sure couldn’t tell because there was a lot of good strategy on display. As you can imagine the scores were great, partially because the conditions were ideal for disc golf. The scores of the night ranged from two strokes under par to a whopping ten strokes under par! Weather WATCH = League Night SHORTENED (only 9 holes). Welcome Aboard Tom Old(father) as an Administrator!

Tom Oldfather, known as Tom Old on this site, asked to use the DFoK Club profile on this site to help coordinate a league at Manhattan's Tuttle Creek State Park (River Pond Course). In order to do that he needed to be added as Admin on this site for the DFoK Club. Based on the conversations I've had with with Tom, he is going to do everything associated to the upcoming "Tuttle Tuesday's" at the River Pond course. I think it is going to be a doubles format, however I don't really know for sure ... more
