WOOHOO!! CHECK THIS OUT!!
Disc Golf comes to Salem's "Ball" Golf course for the first time.
Saturday July 19th, 2014
Disc golf is one of the world's fastest growing sports behind lacrosse, pickle ball, and NASCAR. At least that what is claimed by
Oregon alone has seen a tremendous rise of disc golf courses being installed which is counted around 128 courses, both private and public.
Many "ball" golf courses have begun to open their doors to disc golf, inclu ...

This rocked. Thank you Rick and everyone who helped make it happen.
Thanks for the good words Jeff, we were trying to do it up good with what we had to work with. Now if we can get the okay at a 18 hole golf course and what Rick and I can come up with for a layout and days activities. We are hoping to make it happen but not easy to pull off and get permissions. We will see and time will tell.
Besides Rick did most of the organizing and such, takes mutiple people to pull of events of any kind. Seems we got good feedback about the layout for size of property.

Here are two more links for the video at the ace hole round 1 and round 3. Video compressed from High Definition for posting to web.

More to this editing and export formats then I guessed on so learning curve continues. Hope someone finds these worth watching at least once. Will try to get some of hand held shots up at some point. They will need bunch of editing.

I am running behind getting pictures/videos posted, dealing with some personal issues and my apologies. Here is a link to at least a few to get started, will have more stuff up within next day or so, sorry for delay. http://www.discgolfscene.com/profile/17065/pictures/album_12642
I will edit the video from Ace run hole and get that up soon. Some of stuff not very usable as I am new to this still and learned a lot of limitations with sun and my equipment's view finder screen. Thanks for your patience.

It was an amazing day all around. Thank you to everyone who helped put this on. I have now traveled from Klamath Falls to events in Silverton and Salem and I have been very impressed by the events that have been put on. The organization, the enthusiasm from both the players and the people putting it on, and the different courses that I've got to play all around has been above and beyond. You will be seeing more of me at your tournaments GREAT JOB EVERYONE

Thanks to all who came and participated in this event. Hope all had a good time and as we learn what we are doing it can only get better. We have bigger dreams and plans if they can all come together. Takes a lot of behind the scene work even at 'C' tier tournament. We are open to any and all comments and suggestion to help us improve our show into the future. Thanks all
I will be interested to see your how your pictures turned out. It's weird to be on the opposite side of the camera for a change. I bet you got some great pics of sweet dives, putts and reactions of players. Thank you for doing that
Had a great time! Hope you do it again next year, perhaps at another course?!

If there are any volunteers who would like to help in the BBQ department with us as a helping hand (no experience needed) let me know :)
Steve Moore July 16, 2014 at 5:04am
If there is anyone not playing this event and has camera/video setup and would like to help me shoot the days event, let me know and get you set up as volunteer with me for the day. Should be good day and have just learned that John McCray top rated professional will be joining in for the day. First time in Salem to try out a golf course concept, smaller then most but should still make for great day od disc golf.

WE ARE FULL! NO MORE REGISTRATIONS! We have a Stacked field and I am very excited for the layout and the participants! Thanks to all our sponsors for making this happen! We are Flipping for Frisbees! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULmo1TIfuj8
I didn't do anything :) he seems like a great guy and is just like any world class athlete. ;) ha but he probably doesn't want us making a big deal about it.
He appears to be on a traveling tour this year with wife and a daughter sounds like. He is busy playing northwest events between now and worlds coming up. Been throwing PDGA wise since 98 (current 1030 rating) and is known to be a very friendly type willing to help the sport grow.

It's the Final Countdown (de-na-na-ner....Dana-da da da) 3 days left and only a few spots left!
Cooper Axe July 7, 2014 at 3:50am
Do we get to warm up say by throwing practice shots before the round? Is there time for it? Or could I say show up an hour early and play the course??
Everyone will receive a full color course map with registration on photo paper and get to walk the course, but the only warm ups will be before the two minute warning. No one has ever played disc golf on this course :)
Rick, thanks for the response. I appreciate that we will at least get to walk the course. Playing PDGA sanctioned events blind has been very frustrating for me in the past.
I agree. The owners though said they don't want people playing Friday or even Saturday morning beforehand because they wanted it to be played as if everyone is on the same playing field :)

Hi Rick. I signed up today. I'll try and round up a couple more players :)
Awesome! Thanks Jeff! I'll get you linked on the scene and PDGA website.
Cooper Axe June 6, 2014 at 3:32am
Last question!! If no other boys in my division sign up , what happens? Do I just play the rounds by myself and default win
Regarding your question about being the only junior. Usually it takes three players minimum to make a division. If you're the only junior I suspect Rick would move you to the Recreational division (there's one player signed up). Usually that has a pretty similar level of competition.
Cooper Axe June 5, 2014 at 3:54am
All registered! So stoked for this tournament!
Cooper Axe June 3, 2014 at 10:18am
Sorry to bombard with all the questions. But considering this will be my first tournament, will I get help with some of the rules? I've read the page rules, but I get confused on a few from time to time, such as do I have to use a minimarker? Also when to go etc. Like I said sorry for the questions, I'm just a bit anxious.
Oh don't worry! You will do great! In the players meeting, we will explain over all the rules and such and then you will be put on a card with others that will help you out, not make you worse. Let me know any question you have and check out the rules here at this link: http://www.pdga.com/rules/official-rules-disc-golf
Cooper, take some info from an old timer and go into it relaxed and don't worry about the small stuff. Yes the mini disc will be required for proper marking and required at all sanctioned PDGA events. Level C is entry level to tournement play and fellow players will be happy to help assist wi ... more
good to have courses but low turnout everywhere because u guys can't honor 1 schedule for all tourneys, you don't have to fight over the same people to show up 1 calendar per area,
not 1 calendar per course, set the standard for all of us rick, i would do my best to support this. step up w/ big turnouts. be a leader. you are the man
I am trying to understand what you wrote, but I think what you are saying is that we should plan less events on the same day, and get more people to one event at a time and have a huge turn out? Yes?
exactly, you have enough golfers to fill course easy
Yeah our max for the day was 40 people and we had a 24 person wailist.
I will talk to Josh Pierce, Dan Brown, and Terry Shuler about this. I am talking to Chris Fennger and meeting him today. I think setting up a year long event schedule is really difficult, but we could definatley do one event all clubs together and make it a super event.
This is Chris Fanger's website http://www.discgolfnation.net/
birthday parties have 40 people. random sundays draw 30.
i think salem mac n newberg would fill you up. and get local buzz for sponsors
Hahahah birthday parties :) haha that was good. I know we could fill a course. I'll just wear a tie and suit when I come to the course to tell them the plan about disc golfers on a golf course. :)
if these courses aren't fun (don't go where the challenge is high) expect low turnout also.
Yeah :) I have my I on 3 eighteen hole courses right now. I'm looking to see who would have the cheapest price and do the best bang for the buck when it comes to green fees.
Auburn was $15 per person on a weekend for 36 holes. Dirt cheap. Most courses are $45-$66 on Saturday for 18 holes...so we would need some major supportors :)
I hear you! I think with the explosion of popularity of our sport, and all the tournies popping up everywhere, there should be a definitive SOMETHING! I've been thinking this for a while. I hear you! I think with the explosion of popularity of our sport, and all the tournies popping up everywhere, there should be a definitive SOMETHING! I've been thinking this for a while. There are a lot of great courses in both the Salem area, and of course in the PDX Metro, and we should have them highlighted a bit more by some of the touring pros. With the Beaver State Fling, HUK 4 Indy, and Calapooia Classic, all being staple events, and the success of the other PDGA sanctioned events locally (LSO, AMPED, etc.), I don't see any reason why we couldn't have an Oregon Pro Tour! I feel like we could do more singles leagues in the PDX area as well...I only know of a couple, and none close enough for me to really be an active part of. If there was enough interest...I'd be down to run one up in Vansterdam, or nearby...
Was this published in a paper or on a news site Rick?
I know I forgot some of the staple events, and also forgot to say that we should absolutely capitalize on our opportunity with all the pros being in the area for World's. If you know a pro, take them to a course that isn't on the itenerary in the PDX area (Horning's, Stub Stewart, a ... more
I know I forgot some of the staple events, and also forgot to say that we should absolutely capitalize on our opportunity with all the pros being in the area for World's. If you know a pro, take them to a course that isn't on the itenerary in the PDX area (Horning's, Stub Stewart, a Gorge trip, etc.). Or take 'em south after the World's and hit some of the Salem/Albany/Corvallis/Eugene gems we have...get them out there, and they will fall in love! Oh, and I asked JohnE about Meadow Ridge, and he said "it's challenging!" You all know you LOVE hukn in the NW, let's help the pros see why!
Oh, and I'm going to use your post here, Rick, to sell this same idea to a local course that my crew has been eyeing for a DG tourney for a very long time (like 4 years!). Congrats on the success, and let's hope that it breeds more interest and stories like this!
This was the unedited report sent through the Statesman Journal.
Way to go rick!!! Thanks for all u do for the dg community
