--------------------------
Judy and Bill Brett had a shared life philosophy. "Live beneath your means and give generously." They contributed generously to the community that brought them together to share a 30 plus year marriage. A second marriage for both of them.
They both enjoyed and were patrons of the arts. They commissioned the stainless steel sculpture that can be seen from the hill in Deming Park that was dedicated to my step father's cousin Ed Schmidt who was very much a father to him growing up. They were also sponsors of the Terre Haute Symphony, Community Theater, Art Spaces and ISUs music program.
They established many educational scholarships in Terre Haute through their church, ISU and Ivy Tech. They also established scholarships at my mother's alma mater Graceland College in Iowa. There is now a research institute, in William Brett's name, at ISU dedicated to exposing undergrads to laboratory research and presenting/defending that research to others.
Judy and Bill were avid outdoors people. Mother Nature always played a significant role in their daily lives and vacation destinations. The current disc golf project is their contribution to encourage outdoor activities for locals and visitors alike. We think the potential return on this investment in our community will last for decades. We hope to make Vigo county THE disc golf destination of the Midwest and possibly the nation. With my parents initial financial investment and the financial and labor support of the community we feel our objective is within reach. Already our project may become part of a multimillion dollar Community Innovation Hub at Rose Hulman.
Four of the courses will be named after my parents' grandchildren. William's Course, at Prairie Creek Park, is the first of several to be installed. Journey's course will likely be the 18-27 hole championship level course at Fowler Park. It is currently in the early stages of discussion. Emily and Tess' Course will will find homes in the county as well. )
