My plea to the Disc Golf community: We don’t have to lose disc golf through this people. Play by yourselves and clean up after yourselves. Stay far more than 6’ from each other. Don’t even play in small groups. Play with your kids if you must. Show the authorities that we are serious about going the extra distance to keep our courses open. If we can all do this we should be able to keep the local courses open during this difficult time. Courses are only getting closed because officials are seeing people not following these safety procedures and protocols. I get that many of you disagree with these policies. I’m not going to tell you that you’re wrong either. If you think you can hang out with all of your friends without any real concern; Great! Have everyone over for drinks around the fire pit in your back yard. Go to your neighborhood bar that’s stayed open regardless of the governors orders. When it comes to Disc Golf, however, your opinion on this subject isn’t going change the decisions of the parks. If the authorities keep seeing groups playing the courses, getting too close to each other, etc. they WILL close the courses. If people keep playing anyway (even as individuals at that point) they WILL pull the baskets I would like to remind you all that when baskets get pulled, they rarely get put back In. Hikers and bikers start using the fairways, people start walking their dogs there. Then the parks decide it’s to dangerous to put the course back in. They hold on to the baskets thinking someday they might redesign or build a course in another park. Someday doesn’t come. Do you really think MT Airy comes back? It’s near impossible to keep people off the fairways now. Caesar Ford just got open, but the horse riders would LOVE to take over. It’s all we can do to keep them at bay; close the course now and they win that fight! So many people have worked long and hard to get our courses put in. It has taken many decades of struggles and hard work to get to where we are today. let’s not ruin all that time and effort just because we don’t agree with the response to this virus, or we don’t believe all the hype, or just because we really want to play a few rounds with our friends. Ask yourself honestly weather you would prefer playing with your friends for another few days, maybe a couple weeks if your lucky; or would you prefer have to play by yourself for a month, maybe even 6 months, but you’d get to keep playing for years to come. One more week with your friends on the course today probably means throwing away 40+ years of work. It means many of the courses we love are gone for good. It means the parks have more reason to say “NO” when we ask to put in a new course or want to improve an existing one. They’ll close the courses because WE pissed them off. Please put your personal feelings and opinions aside, whatever they may be, and do what it takes to save this sport for everyone, for the next several months, and for many years to come. Please encourage everyone you know to do the same. Let people you see on the course know how important this is to you. If they are new to the sport, let them know that when this is all over there is an entire community happily willing to teach them all about it, but we need their help to get there.

Regardless of what anyone thinks, this kind of behavior costs lives. The state of the healthcare industry in the Metro Detroit area is VERY close to imploding. Careless interactions with even a couple people has massive exponential ramification. Stay home, stay safe and save lives.

What state are you in, Bart.Michigan is the 10th largest but has the third highest amount of deaths. I have been personally affected by this and like Steve, who is a nurse, take this pretty seriously. You have the right not to, but please don't knock those who do. We're classy enough not to wish what we've been through on you or your family.

I think that's referring to the new work-in-progress course (Rolling Meadows). The main course should be fine. They just had a tournament there over the weekend.

It's playable, but not a finished or worn condition. Dirt tees with flags or markers. Not clear where to go on the course, but there's a map posted somewhere. Still a lot of thorns around so I'd recommend staying as close to fairway as possible.

It "exists" but I'm not sure it is "ready". It still needed a lot of things cleared out when I was there earlier this year. I'm not sure how much has been done since then.

Rolling Hills Park

It exists but is very roughly cut in right now. We will be clearing out a lot of it over a few weeks this month and then allow players to give some feedback about what to change. I haven't been out there is a couple weeks. But, my understanding is that once the water park was closed for the season, the park was going to begin work on clearing, cutting and putting work into the course. I would expect it to be playable in the spring.

Rolling Hills, and Indy for that matter (Washtenaw County Parks) have been great advocates of disc golf and huge supporters of Ann Arbor area growth. They don't have to put in any holes. Disc golf is not some large revenue generator for the park, even with pay to play. I'd be carefully trashing the decision making by those systems, in regards to where and when they think appropriate to use resources. Becoming active in the Ann Arbor area clubs and spending some valuable personal volunteer time is likely the most positive way to see work like this come to fruition.

The course was cut by hand once. Maybe it wasn't perfect but they gave them a pretty good start. And from what I know most of the new course was put in byvolunteers

I went and played the main course last weekend and checked the entrance to the meadows. Still not cut and plenty overgrown. I wish it was playable but it's looking like you'll have to wait until later in fall or next spring to play it. It makes sense for the park maintenance to wait until spring to clean it up.

Most parks are not revenue generators, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be kept up. Coping out with “I’d be careful” is why the park systems walk all over disc golfers IMO. If we don’t speak up, how are things supposed to change? I pay my taxes to a Washtenaw county, why can’t my opinions be heard?

I think that the fact that Foz has done nearly all of the work on this new course, to begin with, speaks to the parks involvement. If we want a new course, I am guessing that volunteers would be the best solution. Of course, working with the park system. Rolling and Indy have been great to work with and huge supporters of our game. Fostering and cultivating a positive working relationship with them is where I was trying to steer this conversation. Ann Arbor Area Disc golf is having a meeting at Aubrey's at 8:00 on Wednesday. Anyone is welcome to come and discuss productive options to help move the course along. A3 has a solid rapport with Washtenaw parks and we would love to hear any ideas on what could help get this course moving and playable. Getting and keeping courses in the ground and in park systems is a privilege, not a right. Too many course around the country get pulled, because nobody wants to help install, maintain and promote the project. I will try to get this put onto the A3 agenda and see if we can reach out to the park to inquire where they are at and what we could do to help.

Hey guys. The A3 board has reached out to the manager at Rolling Hills and found out some info. I thought I would pass along what we found out. She was very excited about disc golf and has both parks (Indy and Rolling) on an aggressive upgrade and upkeep agenda. Currently.... baskets have been installed on the new course. December 2019.....larger equipment will begin work on "boring: out the more wooded holes on the new course. March 2020....additional help and volunteer opportunities will be available to continue clearing the more open and meadow holes on the new course. October 2020....new concrete pads poured for both Rolling Hills and Independence Lakes.
