Newaygo State Park

Newaygo State park does have some fun holes and there are plenty of birdie opportunities. Almost every hole has very rough areas that can add strokes easily if you get off the fairway. There are a few holes that do not follow the flight path of a disc and a shorter placement shot is required to get a par. 18 is just a silly hole in my opinion and something else should have been done. Some tee pads are not facing down the fairways of holes the way they could have been placed. If you are in the area, play Newaygo State park. If you have to play one in the area, to Branstrom, Flip City or Big Bend park over Newaygo though.

It's a very clean course - the fairways are well kept and the rough is very defined and thick. It's $5 per car when a ranger is at the station... There's also weekly leagues during the summer. It's a very short course. Too many short holes keep the course from a better rating. That said, the course is still very challenging as many of the fairways are tight and splattered with many large and small well placed trees. It's a very clean course - the fairways are well kept and the rough is very defined and thick. It's $5 per car when a ranger is at the station... There's also weekly leagues during the summer. It's a very short course. Too many short holes keep the course from a better rating. That said, the course is still very challenging as many of the fairways are tight and splattered with many large and small well placed trees. There's nothing more frustrating than taking a 4 on a hole only 230 long. If you're a seasoned player, you'll play it twice and expect to shoot a low second round, but you might be annoyed with the complexity of some of the short range shots. I think emotional outlook plays a big role in my game and I am sure that there's a significant mental game at Newaygo. I recommend it, especially for developing upshots and putting. There are two holes (8 & 18) that require distance and skill to get out in three strokes or better. There's also a small store on the grounds that, when open, sells drinks, snacks and occassionally discs. There's an outhouse in the parking lot. There are coffee cans at the base of many sign posts for cigarette butts and small trash. There are a good number of benches, some of which have great scenic overviews of Hardy Dam Pond. You can even see Big Bend Park across the water (another disc golf course!) and since there's camping at both locations, you could actually bring your boat and play both courses as a disc vacation! Very cool! Also neat is that many of the tee pads are repurposed cement that was a part of a nearby boat launch! (They're quite grippy and reliable.) There are signs that note the general line and distance of each hole clearly and they are out of the way of teepad run-ups. A severe storm nearly destroyed this course last summer. Only recently were the many, many fallen trees cleared. The course suffered a big loss in lumber, some of which was harvested just to get equipment in. Overall though, the course plays about the same as before the storm. The most noticeable difference was the lack of shade.
