Hole #5 is a joke please trim up that one bush that is totally blocking the fairway. I know someone is gonna say just throw around it this was not intended to be there so DO SOMETHING OR WE ARE SENDING OUT JOE GEIBAL TO TAKE IT COMPLETELY OUT!

With my involvement in the brighton rec course i will only have 1 or 2 days to accomplish work at hudson. Once the dates are planned barring weather the work will be finished.
I will get the work done hopefully with some help. it will either be a sunday or monday the work takes place.
It will be done before DGLO.
I do not expect everybody will be happy no matter how much or how little work we do. some people will not be happy with how much is done and go complaining to hudson about it, the ... more

This year is the worst I've seen for encroachment into the fairways, almost all of it affecting the long tees. Best to send spotters or at least have lead-off throw and go, makes the round go way smoother.

What Would be wrong with just cutting the olive tree down and just leaving the stump? It wouldn't take much time or money to cut down 1 tree a week. After a few months it would make a big difference. At your board meetings you could vote on which bushes would go each week.

*disclaimer: would have to do a hole-by-hole evaluation, but I honestly think it would be best for the course. Might require some new plantings and/or moving some pins to keep up the difficulty rating.

For the upcoming DGLO at the very least a massive amount of trimming needs to happen.

the problem i have with massive changes is getting board approval for massive projects. the park is ok with us doing anything as long as we are on the same page. they don't want to be beat up by complaints when work is done after the fact. invariably any work done will not please anybody if we go to the extreme.

a few years ago somebody wacked that olive bush on monster D i think the one in the middle of the fairway and the firestorm i had to listen to was not pleasant.
We cannot please everybody and won't be able to we will do the best we can as allowed.
The olives are considered invasive and the park would love to see every one of them gone, but they do not have the staff to remove the stumps if we chop the tree down to the ground. plus we would need volunteers with truckS!!!! to haul the crap to the dumping area for an operation that large.
some of the growth is not olives and they would frown on removing any of those, sure i remember spotting on the A hole in the early 2000's and watching the spike hyzers and thumbers there, i haven't seen any of those type of shots for years now.
scott going back 4 years wouldn't paint the best picture we would need pic's from further back to see the changes on the holes.
overall the original is in pretty good shape while the monster is horrible in my opinion.
remember i am an AM4 so i see things differently then most of you guys, but usually everything you talk about i can see if i could throw that far. Johnny V does the bulk of the work on the course and he is an AM1, he sees lines differently then I do but he takes the minimalist approach, while i attack the crap. i hate all olives but that kind of drastic change may have to take place sooner rather then later.

oh greg i am not color blind, i just never bothered to learn the color references to the various layouts, i only know champ black. to much more important stuff to know then the color codes for the various layouts.

Scott, I agree -- most of these holes are plenty challenging without the oppressive fairways you see when things grow in. In addition, many of these holes don't have more than one option off the tee. In those instances, it would be nice to see multiple routes available.

When I was playing there last week, there was a point in the round where I fully realized how overgrown Hudson Mills has become. The main issue is from the long tees on both courses, and those pesky autumn olive trees. They are very hearty growers. I would like to see some old photos of both courses showing just how much things have changed out there in past 4 years.

Now, Hudson Mills is at a point where they have an opportunity to drastically change some things, for the better. All it takes is a massive effort to remove olive trees (yes, this involves some heavy equipment). The difficult part about this, is that some of the olive trees are an integral part of the course. The course will play different if this massive effort is realized. For example, hole 14 on Monster, the monster hole, is just ridiculous. From the long tee many players actually don't even play the fairway, and instead choose to throw along the road. If every olive tree on the right side of the fairway were removed, imagine how great this hole would look, and how much fun it would be to play. This is just one example, there are many holes that could play more fair, be more aesthetically pleasing, and be more enjoyable to play if a number of olive trees were removed.

Additionally, the olive tree is an invasive species that any park naturalist would be happy to eliminate.

Look, I'm not just looking for a better score at Hudson Mills. I truly believe that there are two great courses out there (Original longs and Monster Longs) that are falling far short of their respective potentials. Many of the teepads, fairways and approaches are so choked out with autumn olives that it doesn't leave many options off the tee, increases your chances of losing a disc by a lot, and ultimately makes the round less fun and enjoyable than it could be.

Darren i assume you mean monster 5? is this in front of the pro tee?
I was never good with the colors is blues monster?
we will be doing work before DGLO as always so let me know ASAP what you would like and we will see what we can do. no promises but we do annual maintenance on both courses before DGLO. some is not so noticably and some will be very noticeable.
PM me preferably but comments here work as well.
