Red Hawk expansion to open soon!

Excited to announce the opening of the new 12 hole addition to the Red Hawk (Chuck D.) course. Sleeves are poured and baskets should be going in the ground sometime next week. Teepads will be temporary as we tweak them over the course of the next year. The plan as of now is to get permanent concrete poured in spring/summer 2018. There will be temporary directional signage placed, but no hole signage until permanent pads go in.

We've been working closely with the park staff since February on the design. We encountered a few delays, but are glad to be finally opening these up. The park staff worked very hard to get these in before the end of the year. Big shout out to Thomas and JT at the park for all their work.

Now that there are 36 holes, we have several options for course directional flow including a few options for two 18 hole course layouts. There have been no final decisions made. As of now, the loop extends from after current Hole 2 and returns back to before Hole 3.

LOCO UPDATE

The park will have the final pin placements on the newly opened #13 and #16 in the ground by the end of the week. With that being said, we will be playing two rounds of 24 holes!! The course is looking great and The 101 is excited to get back out and host another fun event!

If the park is able to get the sleeves in the ground in time, we will be playing the full 24 holes!! It's been a long time coming, but the Chuck D. Memorial Course is nearing completion! We are very excited and hope that we can all celebrate by playing all 24 holes next weekend.

Local 101 extends a big thanks to everyone that came out yesterday!! Those who stuck around after the pouring rain got treated to a beautiful second round full of sunshine and horse flies.

Big ups to Mike Even, Chilly, Scott, Jay, JP, and everyone who help set up the tent.

The new letter holes are in and are sweet! If you haven't gotten a chance to check 'em out, you'll be in for a nice surprise. We'll have tons of CTP goodies, a juicy Ace Pool, 100%+ payouts for ams, $101 added cash for the bigs boys, and a bunch of fun.

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL WILL BE LOCATED NEAR CHUCK D. #1. Not in the Beach Center as we have frequently done in the past. Registration will be from 8:30 - 9:30. Big shout out to everyone who notified me that they won't make it. Right now there's no waiting list.

See y'all on Sunday cause you know we don't roll on Shabbos! I told those f**ks down at the league office a thousand time that I don't roll on Shabbos. This isn't Nam. There are rules.

PIC-I-NIC BAKSETS

I just recieved official word that the entire Picnic Course will go in the morning of Friday, October 14th for Union Strikes. The northside 10 will then be pulled the morning of Monday, October 17th.

Hope to see all y'all out there for one last go on the Picnic. I'm sure the wind will be a-blowin' and the water will be cold and unforgiving.

UNION STRIKES UPDATE

Due to the annual cross state rivalry (U of M vs. MSU) that will be taking place on Saturday October 15th, Union Strikes will be held the following day, Sunday, October 16th at Indy Lake. Details to be posted on DGS soon.

TOURNY UPDATES

The 101 is sad to say that we will have to cancel Roc N Rolling Hills which was scheduled to take place on 8/27.

We WILL however be throwing our annual fall affair, Union Strikes, on October 15th at Indy Lake. Due to the delay in construction at the park, there is a good chance that we will be playing one of the two rounds on the Picnic Course!!!! Or maybe both rounds!?

First of all, I would like to formally thank everyone who stood up and cast their voted for disc golf. We rocked the vote!!

Unfortunately, what the article didn't make clear (thanks Ryan Stanton) was that, Ann Arbor City Council made the decision to keep ball golf at HH for the next two seasons. They want to see if the recent rise in numbers there will continue. I learned this after talking with the Parks & Rec. Manager.

The Local 101 and AA Parks & Rec were in talks to discuss the possibility of installing a course there, and it is still a possibility in the future. The good news is that the 101 will be hosting an event at Huron Hills later this year, after Thanksgiving! More details TBD.

When City Council decides to come back to the Huron Hills issue they will see how well the DG community responded to the poll. You guys should be proud of what we did. I certainly am.

Ann Arbor has been asked to vote for what they think should be a potential part of Huron Hills park, which is currently a golf course located near Geddes/Huron Parkway in A2. Disc golf is one of the choices on that list. PLEASE CAST YOUR VOTE AND SPREAD THE WORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NEW 101 MERCH IN STOCK!

New pics were just posted of the brand spankin' new merch in stock for Cali Dreamin (http://www.discgolfscene.com/tournaments/Cali_Dreamin_2011). There is a new limited edition Local 101 stamp on Pro Bosses (Player's Pack Disc), Champion Wraiths, and BB Aviars. We also have a limited run (50) of 101 hats. We're pretty geeked about these, as we've yet to put the mighty union badge on any head gear.

Picnic Course - Full Installation November 15th

Official word from Independence Lake County Park is that the remaining holes on the Picnic Course will be installed for play on Monday, November 15th, 2010. That's right, all 18 holes on Picnic will be in the ground on 11/15 until spring time.

The course - officially named the "Red Hawk" and unofficially referred to as the "Chuck D" - will feature 18 holes with three teepads per hole. The black layout is the most challenging. The black layout will have 18 concrete tee pads that measure 6'x12'. The white layout is the medium difficulty and will feature concrete pads that measure 5'x10'. The red layout is the shortest for newer players and will have natural teepads. The red layout is a work in progress and feedback is welcome.

The Local 101 Disc Golf Players Union would like to thank Independence Lake County Park, Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation and the taxpayers (!!) for this beautiful addition to the Ann Arbor area disc golf courses.

Independence Lake Course Closed

Indy Lake Chuck D course is closed right now during the teepad installation. Plan on at least a week long closure. Local 101 will send out an update when more information is known on a course open date. This is what we have all been waiting for... Happy Happy Joy Joy!!!!!

Overall the 101 is in a generous mood right now. Good vibes from a new course and a positive outlook on the future of this sport. Come out to share the good times and get hooked up with sweet merch!

One more update on the Chuck D. Final tweaks are now "cut in", bids are coming in from contractors and concrete pads (6'x12' = HUGE) are expected to be installed towards the end of September. This is the first time we have every actually got a firm date from the park so things are looking good to have concrete in this fall.

Concrete Contractors Needed for Indy Lake

Independence Lake County Park has a request for proposals (RFP) out for installing the concrete teepads on the Chuck D Course. Please contact Scott White as soon as possible if you are a contractor interested in bidding on this work. Work will include digging out the tees, installing the forms and pouring the concrete. Local 101 will recommend (to the park) someone with past experience doing teepads.

202 Toboggan Doubles

There will not be any dubs at Indy on Saturday June 5th. The 101 is hosting a random draw pro/am doubles tournament at the infamous Toboggan course. $20 gets you entry fee and lunch. Local 101 has 8 berths to the MDGO Michigan State Finals in Ludington, MI over Labor Day Weekend. We will do our best to distribute these berths equally among the divisions.

LUNCH PROVIDED FOR ALL PLAYERS
Lunch will be provided for all players from B-Line restaurant in Howell, MI.

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
Will be in the same place as last year: The "Beach Center" at Independence Lake. This is building that faces the beach and near Picnic Course holes 1-8. Parking is in the far parking lot. Basically once you enter the park you keep driving until it dead-ends into a parking lot.

Trophies are done, scorecards are printed, we are ready to rock.. Hope to see a big turnout for the Local 101s biggest and best event of the year!

The course is in great shape right now. We are going to be installing the Picnic Course for Saturday May 1st. We also have a few tweaks being done to the Chuck D. course. Two NEW holes will be debuted at Loco Cinco.

Cali Dreamin Tomorrow

A few more details on Cali Dreamin tomorrow:

-We will have tournament central INSIDE at Indy Lake. Go to the far parking lot and T.C. will be up on the hill by Picnic hole #1.

-Beer will be allowed tomorrow in the main meeting room only. Local 101 has secured an alcohol permit for this tournament.

-The chili cookoff is looking to be hotly contested, and should provide warmth for that final 9 hole round.

League Ace, A2 Points Series Update

Joe Monteith aced hole 4 on the Chuck D Course this weekend to take down the $230 ace pool. Joe generously donated $36 (one for each hole) back to the Ace Pool so we are not starting from zero. Saturday 11/7: Monthly Tournament at Indy Lake

This Saturday Local 101 will be out at Independence Lake for a single round tournament as part of the Saturday winter league. Come on out to battle for points in the Ann Arbor Cooperative Points Series. Come out to play a custom 20 hole layout using both the Picnic and Chuck D Courses. All divisions (pro, am1, am2, am3, etc) play for cash. $10 entry with a $2 ace pool which is currently at over $200. Registration is 11:30 to noon. Tee off shortly after noon. Pick your own groups. We will temporarily suspend Saturday Doubles this week to allow everyone to play in Mystic Mills at Hudson Mills. So Saturday Dubs will not be played for points or ace pool this week and will resume on November 7th with a singles day on the Picnic Course. If some of you cannot make the full time commitment of a tournament and still want to play a noon doubles round then post here on the dgscene talk section and we'll get something going.

The weather is looking good for the tourney! 50 and sunny. Should be a beautiful day on the lake. Hopefully the wind is gentle.

There will be a 50/50 CTP, a $1 ace pool, and fresh plastic for payouts. The B-line Bar & Grill will be serving up lunch. $5.00 for a personal pizza, fruit and a pop.

Tournament Central will be located at the Robert R. Gamble Group center, which is in the south lot, unless noted otherwise.

Course Updates
Chuck D:
Now that signs are installed on the Chuck D Course it is officially open for play. Woohoo. You should have no trouble navigating the course with directional signs placed throughout the course and a tee sign on every hole. Natural teepads for now and concrete is scheduled to go in Spring 2010.

Picnic Course:
The south side of the Picnic Course (holes 9-16) is installed and open for play. The remaining holes will be in by this Friday 10/16. This course will remain in the ground until Spring 2010 (exact date TBD based on weather/other factors).

Saturday Doubles at Independence Lake return this Saturday 10/17. The ace pool is at $158 from last season. Ace pool payout is 100%! Work day was a success!

Today was very productive out at Indy Lake. We absolutely dominated hole #2. A world of difference. There was also some clearing done on 12, 13, 14, 17. Lots of chips were laid down as well.

Big thanks to Garrett, Harrison, Beerman, Scott White, Scott Ransley, Forch, Smitty, Terry Sink, Jim Daniels, Joe Arnet, and Tom the park maintenance guy. Still a lot of work to be done out there, but today we knocked out a bunch!

Indy Work Day - 10/4/09 - Time moved up to 10am

We want to get an early jump on the day! Please make it out by 10:00 am if you can, but we would appreciate your help at any time throughout the day. We have plenty of work to do. There will be a member of the park maintenance crew on hand to assist us and chip all the wood we remove to place under the baskets.

A pizza lunch will be provided to all who show up.

If you plan on coming out please bring any hand tools such as hand saws, loppers, rakes, work gloves, shears and sharks with friggin' laser beams attached to their heads. We have put a ton of blood, sweat and tears into this course and we ask that you offer up a little too.

So as many of you have seen, the Chuck D Memorial Course at Independence Lake is now sleeved and 18 brand new Chainstars adorn the 60+ rustic acres. While the baskets are in, much work remains. Over the coming weeks we will be installing signs and temporary teepads. So right now yes the course is playable, but for your first round on the Chuck D try to find someone that has played it at least once to show you around. Once signage is installed we will be pushing to get concrete teepads poured ... more

So as many of you have seen, the Chuck D Memorial Course at Independence Lake is now sleeved and 18 brand new Chainstars adorn the 60+ rustic acres. While the baskets are in, much work remains. Over the coming weeks we will be installing signs and temporary teepads. So right now yes the course is playable, but for your first round on the Chuck D try to find someone that has played it at least once to show you around. Once signage is installed we will be pushing to get concrete teepads poured as soon as possible, and if all goes well they could be in before 2010. We intentially did not do concrete off the bat because we want to have the ability to tweak teepad locations as the course settles in. So if you have any suggestions feel free to talk to us on the course or send a message to Scott White, Josh Romine or Mike Fortunato and we will take all of those suggestions into account when finalizing teepads.

Also don't forget that the Picnic Course is set to be installed October 17th which will also be week one of Local 101 Saturday Doubles at Indy Lake. Flip off at noon.

On October 18th we are holding our third tournament of the year:

HELP!!!

Friday morning the 1st of May, I need help putting the baskets together, placing the baskets, and putting the finishing touches on the Charlie Drukis Memorial Course at Independence. I will also need help taking the course out of the ground Saturday evening immediately after the tournament. This includes taking the baskets apart. All hole designs will be finalized, so make an appearance to voice your opinion. We plan on playing a round with a travel basket to get a good feel of the course. Due to the nice weather, the park is expecting to get a good number of picnic-ers who will be in your way - all day. Best to just avoid it all together, or play early.

Independence Lake County Park - Picnic Course is a beautiful property that we have the privilege of playing right now. As the weather gets nicer you will see more and more people out at the park. The majority of the people out there have no idea what disc golf is and what are these funny looking orange things all over the place. When you yell at them from a distance and tell them to move, they get confused and angry. Please know that other park patrons have just as much right to the area as we have. This is not a designated "disc golf only zone" like other parks.

If you encounter a picnic-er that is in your way, please try this approach:

Set your bag and discs down by the teepad or wherever you are. One person in your group kindly approach (up close so you don't have to yell) person/people in your way and tell them: "Hey, so we're playing this crazy game here where we thrown frisbees at these orange things that your kids are playing on. Would you kindly mind moving over to a different area for a few minutes while we play this part of the course?"

If they say "no", then please move on to the next hole and try to play it later. This course has only been in for a few months and it's future is not well known. If we get nasty complaint letters written to the Washtenaw County Parks then it will be pulled for most of the year other then for tournaments. We don't want that to happen..

Please try to play Independence Lake at times when there will be minimal non-disc golfers. If you are planning a Saturday or Sunday round on a nice day, then please try to go early or late in the day.

Just in general be nice and try to understand the point of view of the non disc golfer, who has no idea why you are out there other than to take in the scenery.

So we made some changes to Loco this year.

We no longer plan to hold this tournament at Hudson Mills. This is in no way a slight against Hudson Mills. We love Hudson Mills it is still one of the best courses in Michigan and in the running for best worldwide.

Independence Lake is our project though. We already have one course in the ground and hope to have the 2nd in before Loco. We want to show the park what this here disc golf is all about. We decided to sanction this year mainly to ensure a really good turnout. We want to fill this tournament this year. 136 players will be the cap. We will do a cashless pre-reg again. We are starting to work on sponsorship packages. Please contact [email redacted] if you or your club or your business is interested in sponsorship associated with this event.

One thing I personally felt bad about was last year how we dealt with the ladies who showed up at Loco. We had a huge turnout in the Advanced Women division, way more that any of us anticipated. Well we had planned to do this division trophy only and didn't even do a trophy. The awards ceremony was really kind of awkward, we didn't give anything out to the winner even. SO we want to make it up to the ladies this year, and we hope for the same level of turnout in this division. We did get ladies sizes in the T-shirts, and we plan to do that again.

I think we will still do AM3 as trophy only. AM2 and AM1 will play for prizes with a bigger than average players pack so the purse will not be huge.

The pro division is a different story though. At least $500 added cash but we are shooting for a much larger number. We will be working hard on fund-raising for youse pros to make this a top notch event. We can say that the pro entry fee will be the same or lower than AM1. Remember as an AM you may accept merch instead of cash to retain your AM status. We might sweeten this deal and say any AM that cashes in Pro will get double their money back in merch. It's only fair..

Indy Lake

We have 19 Sunburst Orange Baskets on their way to Independence Lake County Park. Installation of the Picnic course will occur the week of December 8th.

Cali Dreamin will take place at Indy on Jan. 10. Hope to see you all out there..

Thanks to all who voted for Proposal A, the Washtenaw County Parks 10 year millage renewal. Proposal A passes with an overwhelming majority! This will help tremendously with our efforts to install a new course at Independence Lake.

The future permanent course at Indy will be in a different area of the park. This is more of a woods area that still will require fairways to be cleared.

We are currently at 34 players for Union N4I 2008. We will continue to accept cashless pre-reg's via email: [email redacted]

Send an email with your name, division and age. Please name the subject "Union N4I" so we can easily tell what it is for. The tournament is $40 for all divisions, and you can pay when you show up on Sunday (10.19.08)

The course will be installed on Friday afternoon. It will be in the ground for only Friday-Sunday.

Joe Anttila will be running a Saturday Doubles at the Indy Lake temp course at Noon. This is the first (semi) official Saturday doubles of the winter league. It will move at Hudson Mills for the subsequent weeks.

Some good news on the added cash front, CJs sounds interested in some course donations as well as some possible added cash for the pros.

Recent discussions with the park have been very positive. We should have a great course out there within the next year, and the immediate quality of it depends somewhat on Nov 4, 2008. If you live in Washtenaw County, you can vote in this 10 year millage renewal which Independence Lake County Park will rely on to continue to bring new activities to people. Proposal A. Disc Golf is one of those things that the parks see as a positive year round activity. Dedicated clientele of winter coat and goggle wearing crazies that throw frisbies in the snow.. We recently had Jim Kenner out to see the land and offer his expert opinion. Josh Romine will be getting to work soon to layout holes for the permanent course.

We have the caddy books printed, the minis are here and look sweet. Really looking forward to a good day for Independence Lake. We hope to be able to raise over $1000 for the new course. This money will go directly to purchasing baskets for the Indy Lake permanent course. $5 of all players entry fees will go to the course donation and the 101 will match that $5 so a total of $10 per player will go the course.

The 101 will have sponsorship forms for the new permanent course. These forms will outline 3-4 different levels of sponsorship. On the table: Having your name on a hole sign. Benches sponsorship, where your name is engraved on a plaque on the bench. Sign sponsorship, where your name is on the disc golf welcome sign. So basically we're putting names all over the place, but we want to show future players who was there to help when this course went in..

Independence Lake County Park

It's official! Independence Lake will have a disc golf course. The question remains as to when it will go in.. Josh Romine and Scott White will be working hard to get this in the ground as soon as possible.
