DFOK Monday Night Skins League CANCELED.

After careful consideration, I have decided to no longer host the DFOK Monday Night Skins league.
Generally speaking, I have not enjoyed Monday workdays. Nope.
Then for some stupid reason, I thought I'd be a league administrator on my least favorite day of the week. Dumb.
With that in mind, I will no longer be hosting that league.
This is probably a good time to make this change, considering all the talk about other changes in the world of disc golf in Manhattan.
Catch y'all later.

Because of a work-related standing conflict on Thursday evenings, I have to leave the DFOK meeting no later than 6:47PM. I request that we discuss anything related to the 2015 Doubles League at Tuttle between 6:30 and 6:47. It is my intention to run this league as it was run last year, starting on Tuesday, March 10th.

Rick Petrie   February 25, 2015 at 1:34pm

We'll put that as agenda item #1. (There's currently 8 items on the agenda (some will be more time consuming than others) ).

Rick Petrie   February 26, 2015 at 11:10pm

Thanks to all who attended tonight's meeting. I think we made some good steps forward, plus had some fun in the process. I'll get the notes from tonight's meeting refined & posted as soon as possible. I also look forward to when we have a Secretary and/or Social Media Officer (among other officers too)... which looks like will be in 2015? Have a good weekend.

Tonight's league event will take place if it is just raining.

However, as per official league rules, "League events may be canceled due to dangerous weather conditions. Cancellations will be based on Severe Weather WARNINGS issued by the National Weather Service."
In other words, if our area is going to be under a Severe Weather Warning during league tonight, league will be cancelled.

Even though the severe weather warning officially starts later in the day http://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?warnzone=KSZ022&warncounty=KSC161&firewxzone=KSZ022&local_place1=8+Miles+E+Riley+KS&product1=Wind+Chill+Warning#.Usl8UjiA3cs , it is still going to be around -5 wind chill at 1:30.

I would suggest skipping bag tag & points league this week for safety. What do you think?

I have decided to not play today. With Rick gone I have the league stuff (score board, cards, etc.) I would be surprised if new people show up today so you probably wont need new tags. Please record results and send them to Rick. Get the tag in, tag out, score and any tie results.

Will we play 9 holes because of the temperature? The group will decide.

From the ---- Bag Tag League EVENT Guidelines ----
- League rounds will typically be 18 holes. In times of poor weather conditions or shortened daylight, alternative course layouts may be played.

Just a friendly little reminder, tomorrow is the scheduled Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course workday.
The focus will be to further cut back the little branches, stumps, etc. in the expansion area so as complete the intended fairway designs, haul out & pile up the already fallen brush (along #2 & #6), plus any other items that may arise.

DFOK Fairmont Workday, Saturday Dec. 14th

Mark your calendars for Saturday Dec. 14th, from 9am until late afternoon, for a chance to further enhance the Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course.

The primary goal of this workday will be to prune back vegetation along multiple fairways in the front nine. Do you have a branch or two that are driving your c-r-a-z-y? This will be a great time to point them out to everyone, then work on fixing the problem. Have a strong opinion of exactly where some remaining Tee boxes should be built? Come on out!

BTW, the "save this tree" was to protect it because we initally painted with temporary paint as a tree we want removed...

Jon Tveite   December 7, 2013 at 11:41am

I agree that the tree in question should go. There should at least be a doorway-sized gap to throw through on a hole or it does indeed become more of a crapshoot than a game of skill.

Rainy Day = Continued Progress at Fairmont

Shout out to Alan Fox for his time & effort spent at Fairmont Park today.
As part of the Fairmont Park Disc Golf Course Expansion project, a third (long) pin placement was installed on fairway #6. However, prior to today it was not playable due to a few nasty brush piles that needed to be removed.

In other words, you can look forward to seeing long #6 in place very soon!

Fairmont Park Next Nine: Design & Test Stage

Starting this Sunday, January 27th, the Disc Fanatics of Kansas will once again begin working on designing & testing layouts in the "next nine" course expansion area. This will be a trial & error process that will give lots of people an opportunity to play & suggest multiple options... including you!

I should also point out that this will be more of an "open house" type of event. Meaning people will be able to play at their leisure, come & go as you wish, time permitting maybe even multiple layouts. Point being, course design rather than standard competition.

Glow League Update

Since the Glow League is all about having fun, the group had a discussion tonight about what weather conditions are not fun.

It was decided that if the wind chill is below 0 degrees Fahrenheit we will pass on the golf. In addition rain or freezing rain cancels glow league because neither one are fun when it is dark and cold.

Snow is ok. It should be really fun in the snow.

If in doubt, check Disc Golf Scene. If league is canceled it will be on the DFOK talk page by 5:00pm.

Warner & Fairmont Project Updates.

The last few weeks have been eventful for both the Warner Park and Fairmont Park projects.

WARNER PARK (City): A leadership contingency from this club has been working towards obtaining approval to proceed with Phase II of the Warner Park course. This Phase II would amount to adding 9 more holes to the Warner Park course. No specific course layouts have been proposed, primarily because we first need to get the City comfortable with the general concept of using more of the park for disc golf.

Disc Golf in K-State Newspaper

Last nights Warner Wednesday drew the attention of more than just disc golfers.

The Kansas State Collegian, which is the K-State student newspaper, sent Evert Nelson to Warner Park to cover our sport. The result was a nice looking disc golf reference across the top of the front page, plus a full page spread in the middle of the paper.

To summarize, the K-State Collegian writer/photographer followed Mr. Clouse, Mr. Carroll & Mr. Mathewson for part of their round, plus added some inform ... more

New Mowing Pattern at Warner Park!

If you happened to play Warner Park yesterday, this may be old news. Otherwise you're going to want to keep reading.

The SHORT version is as follows: YESTERDAY, the City of Manhattan Parks & Rec. department mowed a large part of the Warner Park disc golf course. No, not all the tall grass has been cut. However, a substantial volume of it is gone. Mark and I were involved in getting this done so we're sure you'll like the improvements.

Mayors Award for Disc Golf - Tues, Aug. 2nd at 7pm - 1101 Poyntz Ave.

I apologize if this comes across as Mark and I just self promoting, patting ourselves on the back, etc. We decided to accept this award because we thought it would improve our chances of getting the "next nine" rolling at Warner Park.

More specifically, our reason for posting this on DiscGolfScene.com is to try to get as many disc golfers as possible to attend this meeting to show their support for Disc Golf in Warner Park. We have a good thing going right now, with all the right p ... more

Community Service Award = Positive Publicity for Warner Park Course

On July 28, 2011, Mark Kewley and I found out that we had been nominated for, and have been selected to receive, a Community Service Award from the City of Manhattan, KS. We will be receiving this award because of all the volunteer work we put into proposing, fund raising, designing, installing, maintaining, etc. the Warner Park disc golf course.

Mark and I are looking at this award in a broader sense. More specifically, we're looking at it as an indication that the Warner Park Disc Go ... more

Today's Weather Situation 5/11 (waiting it out)

Just in case you did not know, we are currently in a Severe Thunderstorm WATCH, until 5pm this evening.

SO,
If it is allowed to expire at 5pm, and there are no new WATCHES or WARNINGS, we will play a full 18 (provided it's not too dark to see). Yes, even if is raining.

If they extend the WATCH past 5:30, we will only play 9 tonight.

If they issue a WARNING, tonight's round will be completely CANCELED!

Terrific Tuttle Tuesday

The weather was terrific, the competition was torrid! Ten players attended this week’s Tuttle Tuesday. Yes that means there were five doubles teams. For many it was their first round of doubles play for the season, but you sure couldn’t tell because there was a lot of good strategy on display. As you can imagine the scores were great, partially because the conditions were ideal for disc golf.

The scores of the night ranged from two strokes under par to a ... more

Weather WARNING = League Night CANCELED.
Weather WATCH = League Night SHORTENED (only 9 holes).

The above described rules will apply if a Severe Thunderstorm Warning OR a Tornado Warning is in effect in Riley or Geary County, at league start time (5:30pm). If the National Weather Service allows an alert to officially " ... more

Welcome Aboard Tom Old(father) as an Administrator!

Tom Oldfather, known as Tom Old on this site, asked to use the DFoK Club profile on this site to help coordinate a league at Manhattan's Tuttle Creek State Park (River Pond Course). In order to do that he needed to be added as Admin on this site for the DFoK Club.

Based on the conversations I've had with with Tom, he is going to do everything associated to the upcoming "Tuttle Tuesday's" at the River Pond course. I think it is going to be a doubles format, however I d ... more
