Haha...How do you see the round ratings from this tourney? Jared does seem to make a good point, but I don't know much about it. Not sure if Tyler's rant is agreeing with Jared or busting him out or both lol?

Unofficial vs Official round ratings on PDGA will be different - the official ratings are based on the report supplied by the TD. http://www.pdga.com/faq/ratings/unofficial-versus-official-ratings-and-results

I agree, there should be no such thing as a par 2, especially at a course as difficult as ROMO. If anything, the course should have been a par 68, with holes 10 and 17 as Par 4's.

Obviously we know they are "unofficial" but the rating doesn't change much when it does become official. I have enough rounds in to know. So I shoot -1 at Lumberjack it's 1001 rated, shoot -1 in the rain at Basket Assassination and it's 977. Plus the pros got better ratings day 2 with no rain.

66 for 22 holes, 68 for 22 holes, 65 for 21 holes and 54 for 18 holes have previously occurred at PDGA events at ROMO. Something must have changed to warrant the new par.

par was set based on 1000 rated par given by the above PDGA support document. also par has no bearing on ratings. ratings are based on the ratings of the players you are playing against on the same layout on the same course on the same day. when submitting the report they we write into the report any adverse weather conditions that may impact scores such as wind, rain, snow, flooded holes etc. so when 1000 rated or near 1000 rated players are playing it often raises everyone's rating for the event and helps when there are also very low rated players to give a better baseline.

Setting hole pars based on the PDGA Par Guide for 950+ player may have implications for next year's AM World Championship. I expect a series of SSA ratings will help avoid putting Novice and Rec. players at ROMO trying to get a 51 for Par on 18 holes.

Exactly, they could all be par 1 and the ratings would not be affected. It is averaged among players whose ratings are 799+, calculated over at least 8 tourneys. "The average rating of all propagators will equal the average rating they get for the round u2013 always" -pdga.com

Your judgment that the conditions were the same can easily be off by 5%. For example, a 6mph wind is 50% higher than 4mph and yet most people would consider those the same. If the grass is one inch higher that's 33% difference if the original height was 3 inches. Players have difficulty seeing how close the numbers are when they are 20 points apart when they are very close in the world of ratings. - Chuck Kennedy

I'm pretty sure that most people are convinced that PDGA player ratings are based on the Scratch Score Averages calculated for rounds played at a particular tournament and course(s). Even those who disagree about a par number for a particular hole and course should recognize that no harm would come to their player rating as a result of TD's use of the guide for setting pars. As a 850 rated player I often finish a par 3 hole with a well executed 3, saying, "that feels like a birdie to me". Implicitly, I wish the par for that hole to be 4 so I can claim a birdie. If counting birdies is the game, then a par 2 hole looks like a demand for an ace; A 3 would cause me to admit another bogey. My sport is less reliant on the variables that go into par numbers. Being under par is only sweet when I have improved over my last score, or have placed "in the money", or it moves my rating up. BTW- Chuck Kennedy must be quoted out of context. I can't make sense out of his wind-speed and grass-length references.

Look at States this year - Round 1 Rec @ Beauty 72 is 794 rated, Round 2 Intermediate @ Beauty 72 is 948 rated, Round 3 Adv. Grand @ Beauty 72 is 883 rated. Look at States this year - Round 1 Rec @ Beauty 72 is 794 rated, Round 2 Intermediate @ Beauty 72 is 948 rated, Round 3 Adv. Grand @ Beauty 72 is 883 rated. The calculations are based on the group of people playing that day. Round 1 and 2 were same day, just different divisions so each of those rounds was calculated differently based on the ratings and stroke count of those players per those rounds.

Forget the word "set" when referring to a previous round. Proof that a TD makes no difference is found in a review of tourneys with the same course, same par, same TD, same individual score, but a different individual round rating. Several factors explain the difference. Those SSA factors are right in front of anyone tring to explain what happened at Swamp and Sasquatch.

I was discussing with him the potential of using SSA for smaller events as the same event on different years proved 20rating points difference. the idea of using SSA has been kicked around the PDGA in previous years but they have decided not to adopt it. regardless of the pars listed by the TD only the propagators playing that day and how they ended up matters at all.

Jared started this discussion confusing par numbers with his points. Chuck's referrence to wind speed and grass goes to explain whether rounds are separately SSA calculated or not. People understand that a small number of propagators can make a SSA less valid, but impact on the individual's 12 month rating is less worry than reaching back for another set of propigators on different playing conditions.
