My first encounter, glad they rattle cause one of us would of probably stepped on it. Maybe 18" to 22" long. I know their poisonous, but are they deadly or just F you up?
"There are only two recorded incidents of people dying from massasauga rattlesnake bites in Ontario and in both cases they did not receive proper treatment.[20] Recent studies indicate that Ontario hospitals in rattlesnake country often do not have anti-venom, as massasauga specific anti-venom is not easy to come by."
There are NO recorded deaths and local hospitals do appear to have anti-venom (according to a nurse friend at U of M/Motts, and another at St. Joes). They are docile and very slow, but as you noted they will rattle if they feel threatened. http://www.fws.gov/midwest/endangered/reptiles/eama/conserve.html
I almost stepped on one at the Thrills at the Mills tournament on the right side of hole 14 on the monster. Might be the same one if he just traveled over the road. That rattle will make your heart beat a little faster when you hear it!
Yikes. Saw one on hole 10 at Goldenrod DGC once...prob 7 years or so ago.

I'm not 100% sure but I think if you don't treat it right away the venom can be fatal.
