DGLA: Ohio Cooperative Point Series - Summer 2014   May 3, 2014 at 3:25am

DGLA OhCPS-S: Updates, Stats and News..... 5/02/2014

So the Spring is finally starting to take shape and the Ohio Cooperative Point Series Summer season is starting to heat up as well. Just a few weeks in and the leaderboard is already highlighting some of the great state talent. We'll take a peek at the leaderboard to check out what's Hot and Who is shooting it. I also like to see who the disc golf gypsies are? You know those players that are always going some place new to play, they know all the courses and always have stories to tell. Man we are blessed to have so many courses throughout the state with more each year which is also the case with leagues; Singles, doubles, putting, bag tags, skins, safari, glow,....Oh do we know how to have fun.....

I know I have posted this in almost every message that after May 3rd the OhCPS-Summer locks and no new leagues can be added. But still after May 3rd I know I will get a few message that say "hey can you please add our league to the OhCPS, we have players who are asking about getting points for their rounds?" and it kills me to say SORRY. That is why I try so hard to avoid having to say that - so I ask you to bare with me. It's just one of those rules that helps make this work, and fair to the 70 players who are already playing in the 11 leagues we have so far - but we look forward to adding your league next season.....

On May 15th I will randomly assign a Highlighted League of the Week date on the OhCPS schedule for each participating league. At that round points will be Doubled. And that normally means that more players are attending and so it becomes a Point Bonanza. Watch the schedule and note the posts to secure as many points and have a great reason to travel to other courses and play other leagues - Road Trip - Car Pool - Double the fun!

If you run a league and you have a special date in June or July send it to me by May 15th and I will use that instead of randomly assigning your Highlighted League of the Week (HLW). Also you can send me any special details about your league or plans for that round and I will add it to my highlight so everyone in the OhCPS has a chance to see what is going on throughout the state in advance of the event.

If you have not already secured your currently FREE DGLA lifetime membership now is a great time to secure one of the lower numbers.

OK now most that venture into my kind of long winded - grammar challenged posts know I like to dig into the stats and look for trends - now that a bunch of the administrative things are done I can devote a little effort to that here and in future posts. Did I mention the OhCPS locks on May 3rd....

OK so I like to start with the weekly leaderboards to see who is playing the most and who is collecting the most points. These leaderboards have a few surprises from time to time but are a good indicator of who the top performers are even if they can not continue for the whole season.

The most rounds played in a week for April was, Mark Festi & Mike Thomas with 4 rounds each. The list is getting to long at two rounds so here are the players with 3 rounds or more in a given week:

April Round leaders above 2 rounds per week

1 Mark Festi 4
1 Mike Thomas 4
3 Don Thomas 3

1 Mike Thomas 3

1 Larry Bright Jr. 3
1 Mike Thomas 3

Now the more you play the better your odds that your point total will climb faster since you have the opportunity to maximize your two best rounds for the week. But what are the biggest point combinations achieved each week?

Well the most points amassed by a player in a given week in April was 47 pts - now that was actually achieved in just one round with and Ace for an extra 25 points and he did it Twice during April at 2014 Roscoe Ewing Scrambles, Roscoe Ewing Park. Nicely done Nick. Cody Dockrill was close behind with a 44pt week just edging out Ron McCollum by one point who also had a great week with 43 pts.

Well played guys.

1 Nick Schultz 47 x2 weeks Nicely done Nick
2 Cody Dockrill 44
3 Ron McCollum 43

Top point getters by week:
1 Nick Schultz 47
2 Cody Dockrill 44
3 Ron McCollum 43
4 Mike "SpiGGy" Broda 41
5 PK Deaner 38
6 Brian Parsons 34

1 Mike Thomas 39
1 denny velardo 39
3 Mitch G 34
3 Steven Cain 34
5 Mike "SpiGGy" Broda 32
6 Mark Festi 30

1 Nick Schultz 47
2 denny velardo 33
3 Mike "SpiGGy" Broda 24
4 Mike Thomas 22
4 Dan Keller 22

1 Mike Thomas 39
2 Larry Bright Jr. 33
3 eric " Sharky " boyd 18
4 Thomas Golubski 16

The April monthly leaderboard currently only has three weeks since the last week is split between April and May so with just three of the April weeks the most league wins belongs to denny velardo with 3 and back to back at THursday Big Money League, Veterans Memorial Park.

Greg Platt, Larry Bright Jr. & Nick Schultz were right behind him with 2 wins each. Nicely done

Wins
1 denny velardo 3
2 Greg Platt 2
2 Larry Bright Jr. 2
2 Nick Schultz 2
5 Dan Keller 1
5 Brian Parsons 1
5 Tim kaihlanen 1
5 Mike Thomas 1
5 eric " Sharky " boyd 1
5 nate lawson 1
5 Mitch G 1
5 adam deford 1

I love to see players get out to several different leagues. This helps spread the good ideas and make the rounds more fun for everyone. I just dream of being able to get out that much so I live my disc golf dream vicariously through these Disc Golf Gypsies. Mark Festi, Brian Shega & Mike Thomas are our April Disc Golf gypsies managing to get to 4 different leagues in these three weeks. Man are we lucky with the number of leagues throughout the week in so many areas and still growing.

Leagues
1 Mark Festi 4
1 Brian Shega 4
1 Mike Thomas 4
4 nate lawson 3
4 eric " Sharky " boyd 3
4 Greg Platt 3
4 Mike "SpiGGy" Broda 3
4 Larry Bright Jr. 3
9 Mitch G 2
9 Ryan Kolbus 2
9 Steven Cain 2
9 melissa martin 2
9 PK Deaner 2
9 Ryan "Tuni" P 2

Not everyone can play 4-9 times a week and that is why we try and balance things out by keeping just the two best rounds per week but if you can get not only should your game improve but the point total should be maximized each week. So watch for Mike Thomas lurking in the wood near you and taking home all those points with 9 rounds in three weeks - way to play Mike. Mike "SpiGGy" Broda, denny velardo & Mark Festi each had 6 rounds - loving the spring weather....

Rounds
1 Mike Thomas 9
2 Mike "SpiGGy" Broda 6
2 denny velardo 6
2 Mark Festi 6
5 Brian Shega 5
5 Adam Reid 5
5 James Humphrey 5
8 Ryan Keats 4
8 Larry Bright Jr. 4
8 Greg Platt 4
8 PK Deaner 4
8 nate lawson 4
8 Ryan Kolbus 4
8 Don Thomas 4

Now the ultimate goal of the point Series is points and for these three weeks of April 110 points was the highest accrual achieved by Mike Thomas - the Ace on Hole 5 of 2014 Roscoe Ewing Scrambles, Roscoe Ewing Park - was just the ticket to jump to the top of this leaderboard. Followed closely by denny velardo with 107 - three back to back wins was his method. Way to get over the 100 pt mark in just three weeks guys.

Points
1 Mike Thomas 110
2 denny velardo 107
3 Mike "SpiGGy" Broda 82
4 Nick Schultz 81
5 Mark Festi 69
6 Adam Reid 64
7 nate lawson 63
8 Larry Bright Jr. 62
9 Greg Platt 60
10 James Humphrey 58
10 PK Deaner 58

So what did this do to the overall standing to date?

86 points separates 20th place from 1st so anything can happen, anyone can make their move or slowly and stead sneak up to claim the top position on the leaderboard and be crowned Ohio State Disc Golf League Champion. Our Winter Champion is currently positioned at 10th place - Larry Bright Jr. with 76pts. 5 points separates him from 9th place James Humphrey. Only 3 pts to 8th which Ryan Keats currently holds from 6 rounds. 7th pace and also 6 rounds with a 2 pt lead is Greg Platt with his three league wins helping to secure that 7th place but still chasing PK Deaner who also played 6 rounds but managed an extra ten points that landed him at 6th place. Mark Festi proves you don't have to win rounds you just have to be consistently near the top to collect lots of points and the 5th spot on the leaderboard. Mike "SpiGGy" Broda demonstrated the same but mixed in a win at Sunday dubs, Veterans Memorial Park to edge up to 4th with 8 rounds and 123 pts. Now you can do it with less rounds but you better be Spot On - like Nick Schultz with only 4 rounds but three back to back wins and two Aces - Hole 5 and 6 at 2014 Roscoe Ewing Scrambles, Roscoe Ewing Park to lock in 3rd place. Can he keep that up? denny velardo shows he is here to play with 8 rounds and three back to back wins at THursday Big Money League, Veterans Memorial Park. So denny spend those Big Bucks wisely and keep up the great play. I think 13 rounds shows our # 1 spot - top of the leaderboard means business. With two league wins at THursday Big Money League & Hudson Springs DGC Tues Night Scrambles, Hudson Springs Park and an ACE at 2014 Roscoe Ewing Scrambles - What Hole #5 again.... That is going to be the OhCPS Points bonanza Ace hole for the season I'm predicting. Way to get it done Mike Thomas our current ohCPS summer season leader.
