ERP Monday Night Single is Back Strong!

Handicaps are back to being calculated on a weekly basis now. Total Point are in the process of being updated (hopefully, before the end of this week).

Below is the process for the handicapping system

ERP Handicapping system:

Note: Setting up a new system can be very detailed and confusing, so we have attempted to set this up in a simple straight forward way. We researched other leagues and have tried to incorporate some of their better ideas and formulas.

Goal: An easy to use spreadsheet one can just plug and crank the weekly scores and have fair handicaps calculated; also, a system that is fair to current players and encourages new player to join with a feeling that they are getting a fair shake.

HANDICAP = .80 of the deviation between the actual score and the SSA of the Pads played
All handicaps are rounded to nearest whole number
OPEN handicap maximum limit of 10 for blacks, 9 blues, 8 reds
REC has no maximum handicap limit

Rules:
Three rounds are required to fully establish a handicap.
One can play in the OPEN or the REC divisions to establish.

(I know players want to jump right into the action and we want to encourage new players to join. So, below are the methods to get in the action quicker while being fair to current and new players)

This is for those who want to start in the OPEN division and be eligible for the cash payout in addition to CTP’s and ACE fund.

(Players will pay full $15 for all $ options as normal)

However,

First round (new player): will play scratch (no handicap) to compete for all money

Second round: will get 50% of calculated handicap from their fist round

Third round: will get 75% of calculated handicap from previous 2 rounds

At this point a new player is fully established and will get 100% of their calculated handicap moving forward

Note: The max handicap for the open division is 10 black, 9 blue, 8 red

REC TO OPEN HANDICAP ESTABLISHMENT METHOD:
(if you play/ed in the REC division and want to compete in the OPEN)
- For the first round 75% handicap will be transferred for those who have established in the REC (as described above (3 rounds completed)
- Second round will get 100% of calculated handicap.
- If not fully established, handicap will be adjusted as described above until full establishment (3 rounds) have been made.
- From that point the handicap adjusts as it normally would in the system
- Max Handicap rules still apply

PDGA MEMBER BENEFIT TO EXTABLISHMENT METHOD:
(If you are new to EPR singles but have a PDGA rating this is the procedure)
- First provide proof of current PDGA rating.
- Calculate handicap by standard formula based on Black SSA
- Actual handicap given will be 50% of calculation to be fair to current player and new player without a PDGA rating

Essentially the PDGA rating is used to put that player at step 2 in the standard system.

Example: Where X is player calculated score deviation from Black SSA

PDGA rating of 900
1) X/900 = 55/1000 ; X=49.5
2) 55-49.5 = 5.5
3) 5.5 X .80 = 4.4 ( this is the calculated handicap)
to be fair they will actually get %50 of that calculation for their first round

First round handicap will be 2
4.4 X .50 = 2.2 (which rounds down to 2)

On their next round this player will get their handicap calculated by the standard system above: Calculation Using intial handicap of 2, plus new calculated handicap for the results of their first round. So this is if they had played 2 rounds instead of the actual one. So now they are in the “Third round status and will get 75% handicap for their next round (actually second round). After playing the next round they are fully established!

HADICAPS FOR RETURNING LEAGUE MEMBERS FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR:
Your first round back in the league you will get the established handicap from the previous year. After completing the first round the handicap calculation is as follows:
Your previous handicap will be used to create 3 fictious rounds and then the current score is put into the system. So it’s like having 4 rounds and 3 of those are factored as if you shot your handicap from the previous season. From that point the handicap adjusts as it normally would in the system.

Additional notes:

Handicap adjustment for different pads:
(Below are the factors based on Black SSA as the standard. Calculation is based on official PDGA Pad SSA’s )

Black is standard handicap
Blue = standard handicap X .88
Red = standard handicap X .83

Finally, we use just the most recent 10 rounds for handicap calculation. It is simple and puts emphasis on a players’ current level of play.

Additional notes:

Handicap adjustment for different pads:
(Below are the factors based on Black SSA as the standard. I did the math based on official PDGA Pad SSA’s for 2009 and 2010.)

Black is standard handicap
Blue = standard handicap X .88
Red = standard handicap X .83

SSA’S: (based on official PDGA results)
- Black pads: 55
- Blue pads: 51
- Red pads: 49

No system is full proof so adjustment can be made to improve the system and make it more fair. If adjustments are made they will be posted on the ERP website before being made effective for the following week.
