October 26, 2011 – NFGA Fall Series Final Round

MaT wins the NFGA Fall round, the Surgeon’s Cup and the season’s Overall standings for the league. A “hat trick” by hockey standards! MaT wins the NFGA Fall round, the Surgeon’s Cup and the season’s Overall standings for the league. A “hat trick” by hockey standards!

Looks like the Cup will play a down under role for MaT during the winter!

The final round was tighter than it seemed with both MaT and Robby tied for the round with Sammy a stroke back followed by Travis, who was only two behind the lead and a stroke in front of Wayne. Bret rounded out the field.

Hope to see everyone back for next year’s league play. The weather has been so nice; it would be great to put together some ad-hoc action over the winter. Maybe we could have a winter “Ad-Hocker” league that tracks the best round for each player against that player’s two season average.

Anytime any player can play, he notifies distribution and those that can play will play. If you score a stroke below your two season average, you record a -1, etc, etc.

For anyone who is interested, I will send you the NFGA distribution list.

Duluth, GA USA (AP) – NFGA Update

Current scores leading into the final round are as follows:

So, what can one say? MaT has never scored better than a fifteen under (-15) this season. Sammy, on the other hand, holds the course record with nineteen under (-19). With a one stroke Cup differential and a four stroke season differential, this one is still wide open.

What does this say about the last round of the season? I think we all know what it says!

MaT and his late breaking “Magnum” sponsorship are at serious risk and the possibility that he may lose if he does not sustain his momentum will be a factor that may just take his mind out of the round and cost him his sponsorship into next season.

And, while MaT and Sammy go at each other, Robby will, no doubt, be making a run at both based on his season best eighteen under (-18).

Assuming any of these players can score their best of the season, MaT may be going down, but luckily, based on his new sponsorship, he will be going down with “protection!”

Another battle will be brewing for third place and Robby is the catalyst for pulling this one in as well. Making him the “pivot man” his current third place ties all of the action together. And if you have been to any of these rounds, you will know that the action will get fast and furious on the “Travis Trail” which officially starts on the fifteenth tee. Robby's incevtive to get into MaT and Sammy's game will be to stay out in front of Wayne and Travis who will have a battle going of ther own. And this battle might just jump up into Robby's space if he does not pull out early.

If you have twenty dollars ($20) to invest, I recommend you go to Ticket Master to purchase your ticket before this round is sold out. There are still tickets available for the twelfth, fifteenth and sixteenth fairways as well as the seventh and seventeenth greens.

All parking passes have been issued so you will have to catch a free shuttle from the Duluth Station parking lot on Buford Highway. Pickups are in front of the west side of the parking lot in front of Subway who is offering a 20% discount for NFGA SC ticket holders.

Duluth, GA USA (AP) - New NFGA Sponsor

Almost lost in the shuffle of the first round excitement, was the announcement of a new sponsor last week. And we are talking about a “huge” endorsement (or should we say endowment) deal for our current leader, MaT Coughlin.

The Church and Dwight Company have sponsored MaT under their Trojan Condom brand; more specifically, under their “Magnum” label. Those that know MaT well, don’t necessarily get the “Magnum “association however, Susan Denner, Church and Dwight VP of sports marketing stated, “We are expecting ‘big’ things out of MaT during the Surgeon’s Cup this season.” Supposedly Mat’s contract includes a renewal clause depending on a final and sustained performance this Wednesday.

MaT has already predicted a win even though he is only one stroke ahead of one of the league’s most formidable adversaries, Sammy Jackson, the current Cup holder. “MaT can shower in his big raincoat all he wants,” stated Jackson. “WHAM-O and I are taking both the Cup and the League this year!”

Five players made the tee tonight with MaT returning to the series and posting a solid first place finish to stand only one and a half points behind Sammy who, with a second place finish, was able to hold on to the lead in Overall League scoring.

Robby, who was a bit less on fire tonight, finished third with Wayne and Travis finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

League scoring aside, the Cup is now on the line for the long winter break. Make a place on your mantle and come out to finish off the 2011 season this Wednesday.

Five players turned out for the first end of season bonus round. Sammy, Wayne, Travis, Frito and Robby were all on hand to take advantage of the doubled points format which ended up impacting the first and third league scoring positions. Robby came out on fire this night throwing his best ever recorded 54 (-18) to win the round and gain 10 league points (just one stroke shy of the recorded course singles record held by Sammy). It all came down to another round winning Ace on 18 giving Robby not only his third Ace of the season but also his fourth consecutive win (though he missed the round last week, this is still four in a row for his participation).

With the doubled scoring bonus, Robby’s round put him soundly into third position behind MaT who fell to second place after Sammy’s round of 55 (-17). Both Robby and Sammy picked up bonus points, which positively impacted their best 10 scores to date, moving both up a notch on the Overall League scoring chart.

Wayne and Travis both shot 66 (-6) with Wayne taking third in a two hole playoff. Frito hit a very uncharacteristic 72 to round out the group.

In summary, Robby picked up four (4) league points as his ten (10) bumped out his previously lowest round of six (6) points. Sammy picked up two (2) league points bumping out a six (6) with his eight (8) and Travis picked up a point bumping a three (3) with his four (4). Neither Wayne with six (6) points nor Frito with two (2) points impacted their top ten scores with this evening’s play.

It appears that the bonus format is going to have an impact on the final run to the Overall League scoring winner. As the season winds down, no shows will see a negative impact since each missed round is a missed opportunity to improve or maintain a player’s position.

Conspicuously missing from last Wednesday’s round was Wayne Russell who rarely (other than the occasional colonoscopy) misses a round of play.

But on this day, he was MIA; and for what reason?

Let us not forget that his disc was challenged after the July 20th round, and that the Compliance Committee was slated to make a decision on August 2, one day before this week’s round. Could it be that the decision (as yet not publicly announced) did not favor Mr. Russell?

Unconfirmed rumors have it that Russell stated there was a conflict with family plans. Then again, he is the eldest of the players and there was a National Weather Service “official” heat advisory for August 3.

As the round turned out, Russell’s overall standing in the league was not impacted. In fact, while there were some slight changes to point spreads, there were no changes in the overall standings as a result of last Wednesday’s round. Maybe the old man just decided to take the day off. Maybe he is resting up for the third annual Alexander Aerial Armada which was to be played on Saturday.

In any case, hopefully we will know at least some of the answers next Wednesday.

August 3, 2011 - Singles Round

With an official National Weather Service heat advisory called for Atlanta, four players braved it--and brought it--on this the twentieth round of the season. MaT, Frito, Sammy and Robby would sweat it out with MaT taking the round by posting another of his season’s best -15. Sammy, with an ace on 18 to end his regular round, would force a three way tie for second with Frito and Robby at -11. After two playoff holes, Frito would hold on to second with Sammy beating out Robby for third. ... more

The weather was not the only thing creating a bit of heat on this round. A challenge has been made to the value of the ace pool by virtue of a player having an open ace pool IOU. Travis, though he was not in attendance, is the first player who was officially in an IOU status when an ace was hit. While the rule is clear as to what happens should a player be playing a round while in IOU status, it is not clear as to what happens should that player still be in IOU status, but not present, during a subsequent round.

The issue will be tabled at the next Rules Committee meeting as to whether Travis will be assessed the 5x ace pool IOU penalty which would bring the total ace pool winning for Sammy to $54 plus the amount collected for this round.

Messages left at the Nolan residence have not been returned as of this writing.

League Scoring Formula Update

Twenty (20) rounds have now been played. The average rounds played for those players who have played at least ten (10) rounds is now fifteen (15). Accordingly, the Overall standings statistic now accounts for each player's best fifteen (15) rounds.

The challenge was launched against Wayne Russell (by a player who wished to remain anonymous) for having a disc that is “too light” to be considered “legal” by league standards.

“I can only imagine who would stoop so low as to launch a formal league complaint about my disc,” said Russell when asked about the challenge. “When I first started playing in this league, I was playing with a 1970s era #4 Disc Golf Association (DGA) approved disc. Though it was a relic, I sacrificed it to the street knowing that the harder plastic would stand up better to the abuse the street puts on a disc. After about 5 or 6 rounds, someone complained about the disc not being legal. Surely enough, I checked the league web site where I found that it defined the type of disc to be used as a 175 gram UPA approved Frisbee. In order to comply, and stop the griping, I purchased a “legal” disc and continued to play. Now this happens!”

The league has the right to monitor and to govern the type of discs that are used in league play. Russell’s disc is legal from the standpoint of the type and weight that are stamped on the disc itself. The league standards committee would not comment on another charge that was supposedly made that Russell may have “carved” his disc down to a weight at or near the same weight as his original DGA disc.

When asked if he had ever “carved” a disc, Russell went off! “Show me where, in the rules, it states that you have to replace your disc once it gets down to some weight. I have never carved (and will never carve) a disc in order to lighten it. I don’t even believe a lighter disc makes sense in this game! Sure, the #4 was about 10 grams lighter than the standard but it was also smaller in diameter. The diameter and the plastic is what gave it the stability that made it stand out, not the lighter weight. In fact, all the discs I use to play disc golf are heavier than 175 grams, so lighter does not give me any advantage. What about color? My disc is the only red one used in the league. Maybe someone should lodge a complaint about that!”

The League Compliance Committee is expected to make their decision by August 2. In the meantime, Russell will be allowed to play (under league asterisk stipulation) with the disc in question.

Another hot and muggy afternoon was the scene for nine players who made this round. MaT would continue to demonstrate his air of consistency by winning the round with a solid -15 to tie his best score of the season (for a third time) and to move into the legue scoring lead by a point over Sammy. MaT would continue to demonstrate his air of consistency by winning the round with a solid -15 to tie his best score of the season (for a third time) and to move into the legue scoring lead by a point over Sammy. Wayne would take second at -12 after a one hole playoff. Hitting an ace with his first shot, Wayne gave Robby but one chance to keep the playoff alive. “I have to say, I was, in no way shape or form, ready to play another 15 hole playoff today,” said Russell. And lucky for him, Robby was not able to convert on his tee shot and the playoff was over after one hole.

The Best Hole Award (BHA) goes to Furman Sanders, not for what he shot, but for what he said! Always keeping up with the banter and after teeing off on seven, Furman removed his blouse. For some of the group, this was their first exposure to the artwork of tats that adorn Furman’s upper torso. Compliments from the group were aptly offered and Wayne, of course, had to offer his own form of complimentary humor at which time, the following exchange took place.

Wayne: “Hey Furman, what are you going to do with all those tats when you are all weathered and wrinkly?” Furman immediately and without hesitation replied: “I guess I will always keep my shirt on, like you do.”

This is but one of the many reasons we all continue to come out and play in the heat, the cold, the wind and the rain. Humor, taunt and competition are what keep it fun!

Unfortunately, Furman’s shoulder gave way before the round was over and he was not able to finish. We all hope his shoulder recovers so that we can continue to enjoy his quick wit, banter and able competition.

July 13, 2011 – Doubles Round Summary

Hammerin’ Frito Bandejo was ablaze this afternoon! All groups started off the round reasonably well. And then, starting with a hammering eagle on 6 and a hammered bird on 7 Frito started the tear for the Frito/Robby Team. Robby would nail an eagle from 75 meters on nine. On eleven, Frito would hammer a bird and then another bird on the rarely birdied 12. All groups started off the round reasonably well. And then, starting with a hammering eagle on 6 and a hammered bird on 7 Frito started the tear for the Frito/Robby Team. Robby would nail an eagle from 75 meters on nine. On eleven, Frito would hammer a bird and then another bird on the rarely birdied 12.

Staying on their heels, at two back, was the team of Sammy and Wayne followed by MaT (who also hit a bird on 12) and Travis and then Stone and Mossburg.

All teams eagled 13 with some stellar up shots after some of the longest tee shots of the season.

On 14 the Frito/Robby team stumbled a bit with a par giving the rest of the field a stroke.

As the group headed into the “Travis Trail” birdies were made on 15 and 16 to keep the game within a stroke. On Eagle 17, Frito and Robby both went off the fairway on their drives while Sammy and Wayne put their shots on the fairway left and within a meter of each other. Wayne’s up shot left about 9 meters which Sammy nailed for a double eagle 3. Frito and Robby took an eagle and the game was tied at -18.

On hole 18 both teams birdied and the playoff was on at -19!

Due to scheduling conflicts and after the playoff began, the teams were whittled down to Frito and Wayne, who both agreed to play “cali/odd dog” style and continue to throw their partner’s discs. With two shots each, this went on for an unprecedented 15 holes at which time Wayne left himself too much of a putt (actually directly across the fairway from hole 18 at 9 meters) and missed both by only inches on either side of the hole.

Frito attempted his first putt “center style” and from about 2 meters. Hiking the disc between his legs, he missed by a long shot, but turned around and nailed the bird to win the match.

Congratulations to the team of Frito and Robby and particularly Frito for a stellar and grueling round!

The Ace Pool is now at $38 with Travis holding two IOUs.

As a correction to the discussion held prior to the round Wednesday, Travis was actually two (2) IOUs down on the pool and would have been penalized $10 (2 IOUs X $5) had someone hit an ace. It takes a big man to play a 5X IOU round. It takes an even bigger man to play at 10X. That is why part of this course is named after this stud!

Oh yeah, BOB (one of only two NFGA players to have ever met and beaten Skrote Sphinkter) caught up with the group on 7 and played to a stellar -13!

First and foremost, CONGRATULATIONS to Sammy and Erika on the birth of their beautiful baby boy, Carson Winston Jackson who came into the world on July 1, 2011! ________________________________________________________ The course record was challenged tonight however; you have to hit more eagles than the one on hole 17 to get there! Wayne found that out by posting his best ever -17. The hole 17 eagle was just not enough to get him there with pars showing up on 3 and 12, . Sammy remains the course singles record holder at -19. And he also holds half the course doubles record with -21. Definitely the force with which to recon! "Fear the B!"

It was hot and muggy and four of the six players would hit their best season records tonight. Joining Wayne were Robby with -14 and both Furman and BOB with -12. Sammy and Travis rounded out the card with -10 and -6 respectively. All in all, the round average tonight, at -12, is the best ever recorded singles round average!

We are introducing a new concept tonight. Each week, we will all vote, at the end of the round, for what will be known as “The Best Hole Award.” The reward will simply be the acknowledgement of the group; no money, no free merchandise from the sponsors, just recognition. And without further ado (or voting since this is the night of introduction), the first BHA goes to Sammy for his awesome hammer throw eagle on 14. While the drive was long and probably the best I have seen on this hole, it was the hammer that deserves the award.

Duluth, GA USA (AP) – Congratulations to Sammy Jackson for winning, not just the tournament, but both rounds of the 2011 Surgeon's Cup Summer Series!

"The CUP is back in the clubhouse!"

Sammy came out firing on the second round of the tournament. After two birdies to start the round, it looked like he was going to quickly buffer himself from the field. However, MaT would step up and stay within 4 strokes by the time the group reached 9.

MaT, on twelve, would then take back a stroke with a stellar birdie throw from more than 15 meters.

On 13, and with more meat than he wanted, MaT was also able to nail a 10 meter put to match Sammy's tap in. Both with eagles, the play went to the long downhill number 14 with three strokes separating the leaders.

Sammy would leave his approach quite short and a bit obstructed while MaT parked his second shot in line for an easy bird on the last hole before the "Travis Trail." Sammy hit par and MaT was within 2 strokes of the tournament lead.

On 15, both players threw great drives leaving themselves in the fairway with approaches in the 45 - 50 meter range.

Then it happened!

MaT threw first and landed “left with meat!” Sammy then nailed the hole for his second eagle of the round. MaT was able to birdie the hole but now Sammy had taken back the stroke from 14!

With less than stellar drives, both players were still able to birdie 16.

It was at this point, during the putts on 16, that something odd (and never before witnessed in tournament play) occurred. All of a sudden, and apparently from nowhere, sticks, pine needles and broken shards of twigs showered some of the players who were still putting out the hole! It is not clear what the source of the disturbance was as the winds were calm and no wild animals were noted in the area. In any case, there were no complaints or challenges offered.

On seventeen MaT, now seeming to be a calmer self, drove down the seventeenth fairway followed by Sammy. Both drives were a bit off their regular games; however they both recovered nicely and scored eagles on the hole.

Sammy hit a birdie on 18 to finish the tournament at -28, winning by four (4) strokes and setting a new two-round Surgeon’s Cup record, edging out MaT who held the record from last year’s summer rounds at -27.

Duluth, GA USA (AP) – Round One is in the books!

The back end of a violent thunderstorm was moving off the course as the group teed off in a slight drizzle around 6:45 Wednesday.

The group of nine (9) was made up of the current NFGA Wednesdays League Scoring leader MaT Coughlin, second place’s Sammy “Fear the B!” Jackson, Wayne Russell, Frito Bandejo (kg), Travis “The Trail” Nolan, Brett Butler (making his first 2011 official round appearance), BOB Krask, Andy Mossburg and first time player Dave Travisfil.

On the front, Sammy birdied a total of 5 holes but could only scrape his way to a par on the usually easily birdied par 5 number 6. And when his approach shot went long on 9, he was left with a guarded 25 footer for a bird which scooted around the hole to the right relegating him to par for the hole.

Finishing the front at 29, Sammy was -5 and leading the group by two strokes.

That two stroke differential was separating Sammy from 3 players who were out at -3. Frito, Wayne and Travis all had a few holes we know they would like to have back: Frito’s bogey on 3, Wayne’s missed bird on 7 and Travis’ army golf round on 9. Laying two (and far right on a sloping lie), Travis slip-launched one perpendicular and across the fairway onto another homeowner’s driveway narrowly missing their car. His recovery shot blasted out and under a line of maples and into position for an incredible save of a par 5 that, more than once, had bogey written all over it.
Butler was in next at a 32 for a -2 front nine while MaT bogeyed nine to finish at -1 (not a familiar place for him to see himself). But if anyone is up for that challenge, MaT is your guy!

The group rounded out the front with BOB in at +2, Dave at +5 and Andy at +7.

All in all, the front played quite slow with only a total of 22 birds seen for the entire group.

The back would pick up the action and again there would be shots everyone would want to have again.
• Six more birdies for Sammy and an eagle on 13 to finish in the lead at -13
o Take back: the layup on 17
• Five birdies and 2 eagles for MaT who finished at -10
o Take back: the front nine
• Frito with 4 birds and an eagle to finish at -9
o Take back: the drive for par on 18
• Wayne with 5 birds and an eagle to match Frito’s -9
o Take back: the drives for bogey on 12
• Four birds and an eagle for Travis who had to absorb a bogey on 12 to finish at -8
o Take back: the drives for bogey on 12
• Brett hitting 5 birds and a bogey to finish at -6
o Take back: the bogey shot on 14
• BOB came up with 3 birds and an eagle but had to absorb 2 bogeys on 10 and 12 to finish at -1
o Take back: the round
• Dave hits 2 birds to finish at +6
o Take back: none needed. Great round for a first!
• Andy with a bird on 13 finishes with his season best at +9.
o Take back: none needed. Best round of the season so far.

So, what is in store for Saturday?

Draw your own conclusions but if 2010 was any indication, I see 2011 as a very open game! Though MaT continued to take it to the MaT last year, BOB really stepped it up while Sammy kept on keeping on. That, of course, was before the “Fear the B” campaign Sammy and WHAM-O launched a few weeks ago.

Now let us not be confused by the abbreviated one round 2010 Fall Cup which Wayne was fortunate enough to win by a single stroke and who continues to flaunt the Cup during each weekly round.

Sources close to Wayne say that his flaunting of the Cup each Wednesday was his way of saying that the Cup and the battle to own it should never be abbreviated! “If you can’t play two rounds, then don’t move the CUP!” That is the kind of competitor he is.

Details for Saturday’s round are forthcoming. A player meeting is tentatively scheduled for 12:45 with a scheduled tee time of 1:00 PM (subject to host approval).

Though the NFGA plays a mob golf format (one group), the tee order and card groups will be as follows:

League Scoring Format

After our discussion on June 15, the League Overal Scoring now reflects the avearage number of rounds played by all players who have played at least half the total number of rounds played by the league.

-We have played 12 rounds
-Eight players have played more than 6 rounds
-Those 8 players have played an average of 10 rounds

Until that factor changes, we will track each player's best 10 League Scoring Rounds.

Play at least ten rounds; gain more points! Play more than 10 to better your points!

LEAGUE SCORING FORMAT - CHANGE PROPOSAL

By the time our round Wednesday June 15 plays out we will have played a maximum of 13 rounds both doubles and singles. We should take all of the players who have played at least half of those rounds which will be 7 rounds (rounded up) and use their rounds played to calculate an average number of rounds played by all of those players. This will equal 8 players and their round average will be 10 rounds. Thereby, we will use a "best 10 rounds played" to accomodate the scoring for each player in ... more

Going forward from there, if you have played 10 or more rounds, you can only imporve if you knock out one of the lowest scrores of your moving ten on any given new round. Those with less rounds than 10 can only improve their scores as they play more rounds that will add to their score base. This process should alllow for some more closeness to come to the groups as the lower rounded players get the opportunity to pick up points on the highel levels who will have a more difficult time improving their scores which already comprise ten rounds.

Come on! Someone speak! This will be fun to watch and really tighten up the battle at the top while the rest of the group slides in for the fight! I predict a sleeper will come from the lower tier to make a play for at least third place in the final scoring!

And as the average number of rounds grows, there will be be even more opportunity to see shifting among the leaders. Sounds like more fun to me but then again, I am the Waynal one!

Add that to his doubles record of twenty one (-21) under as set with Frito on April 20, and you have a double whammy (or should we say WHAM-O) as it is now rumored that the Frisbee maker may be in talks with Jackson for a sponsorship. Put that together with holding the best average round score of the season and you have a guy who only needs two more accomplishments to run the gamut for the league. Those are; 1) the lead in the Overall Standings and, of course; B) the coveted Surgeon's Cup!!!!!

June 1, 2011 – Doubles Round

Six players came out to play on what (so far) was the hottest, muggiest and perhaps most unusual afternoon of the season. You can say what you want about League points but I can tell you there was more than heat and humidity in the air this day. In the middle of teeing off on seven, the group was treated to a (Ford F-150 sound system based) mini Luther Vandross concert; compliments of one of the neighbors who lives just off the eighth green. Six players came out to play on what (so far) was the hottest, muggiest and perhaps most unusual afternoon of the season. You can say what you want about League points but I can tell you there was more than heat and humidity in the air this day.

In the middle of teeing off on seven, the group was treated to a (Ford F-150 sound system based) mini Luther Vandross concert; compliments of one of the neighbors who lives just off the eighth green. Once the song had satisfied the neighbor’s musical whim, he was on his way down the fairway only to CRUSH Robby’s disc. It was heartbreaking to see a great lie jump out from under the front wheel only to flip back under the rear and get hammered a second time. The only consolation was that the lie was actually improved a bit and the team birdied this difficult hole. As the group played up to eight, the neighbor could be seen, in his driveway, apparently hosing (what he thought might be) evidence off of his tires. No kidding; he was hosing off the right side of his truck!

As if that was not enough, after half the group teed off on nine, another vehicle hit two discs (one of which again was Robby’s) as they lay perfectly thrown in the middle of the fairway. Perhaps this round should come to be known as the “plop plop, fizz fizz” round.

The team of MaT and Wayne picked up momentum on the back and took the lead, closely followed by Robby and Travis. As the group played down the Travis Trail, the team of Robby and Travis fell behind another stroke but would make it up with an Ace on 18; nailed by Robby ON THE FLY! And being the gentleman he is, Robby left a buck in the pool, starting a new tradition to be know as the "Morgan Dollar" for those that consider themselves gentlemen.

As predicted, Overall League positions have changed as a result of this round. Next week will likely see more of the same as the players start to duke it out for League bragging rights.

May 25, 2011 – Singles Round

Eight players came out on a warm muggy evening to tee it up for Round 10 of the NFGA’s 2011 season. MaT continued his form to take the round while Sammy maintained enough ‘strokage’ to stay on top of the Overall standings with a three stroke lead over MaT. The league is tight and it is expected that most rounds from here on out will offer the opportunity for some place changes. May 18, 2011 – Doubles Round

A season record tying nine (9) players turned out today to play in what was certainly some perfect weather for a round of Frisbee golf on the Old Peachtree Walk Frisbee Golf course. Though an odd number of players turned out, the group agreed to play a doubles format with a designated Cali. It took an unprecedented thirteen (13) playoff holes to finish off today’s round. A season record tying nine (9) players turned out today to play in what was certainly some perfect weather for a round of Frisbee golf on the Old Peachtree Walk Frisbee Golf course.

Though an odd number of players turned out, the group agreed to play a doubles format with a designated Cali.

It took an unprecedented thirteen (13) playoff holes to finish off today’s round. With relationships strained and dinners cold, the team of Wayne and Robby edged out Sammy and Frito to take the round at seventeen under par
(-17) which also snapped Frito's Doubles Round unbeaten streak.

The teams vying for third and fourth place agreed to a play off which required five playoff holes and was taken by MaT and Travis over Schneider and Furman at fourteen under (-14). MaT, who was returning from a two week hiatus was a bit off his game this day. "I will be back in form the next time I play," stated MaT who advised his recent absences were due to the charity work he was doing for the Target corporation.

Andy, playing Cali (Odd Dog), finished at four (4) over to round out the group.

Next week’s round will be a singles format.

Seven players turned out this day for what was to be a season course best for five of them. It was hot, muggy and still; which allowed the group to see some of the best drives and second throws of the season! Add to that the fact that the esteemed Furman Sanders made his first season appearance and you have a round that was truly enjoyable for all.

And, as it always seems to play out, the final round leaders were all knotted up as the group approached the Travis Trail (holes 15, 16 and 17). However, since no one really gives a flip (no pun intended) about the details, Wayne took a stroke on Sammy at 17 and held on to take the round, tying the season course record at -15 (see the action under the video tab above). The rest of the field followed.

So far, we are keeping league points (for what I do not know but I love statistics) based on every round played. Please note the news for May 12 "Overall Standings" which speaks to the concept of league scoring and let’s be ready to discuss this at the next round.

Speaking of league scoring, Sammy (though he choked and fell behind on 17) actually took the Overall standings lead due to a couple of missed rounds by our Target sponsored, heretofore, league leader MaT. And, Wayne with his stellar putting (he did not miss a single putt if you can believe that) and a couple of nice approach birdies, edged out Frito from third place by one-half of a league point.

Oh yeah, the players who scored their season’s best are:
Wayne @ -15, Sammy @ -14, Frito @ -7, Furman @ -4, Wiggins @ 4 (this was the first singles round for both Furman and Wiggins, but that still counts).

The fun continues and the competition is heating up; so be there for round 9 next Wednesday! In accordance with league rules; if we have an even number of players, the round will be a random doubles format.

Overall Standings

- Overall standings shown here currently reflect all rounds played so far this season.
- Discussion last round seemed to favor a scenario to include only some number of each player's best rounds as opposed to all.
-That scenario allows the league to minimize the impact for missing rounds.
- So long as a player is able to play that minimum number of rounds their scoring opportunity will be in line with the league.
- Last season we played a total of 20 recorded rounds.
- Let's give some thought as to how many rounds we would want to include.

May 4, 2011 - Doubles Round

Three teams started the round at 6:08 PM with a slight breeze and cool temperatures prevailing over the course. Early in the round, on hole 4, team 2 suffered the loss of a disc when Frito's new disc (its third round) was unintentionally crushed and broken by a homeowner pulling into his driveway. Fortunately, Frito's old disc was still at the club house and, after a few shaky throws, he was able to get it under control for the remainder of the round. Three teams started the round at 6:08 PM with a slight breeze and cool temperatures prevailing over the course. Early in the round, on hole 4, team 2 suffered the loss of a disc when Frito's new disc (its third round) was unintentionally crushed and broken by a homeowner pulling into his driveway. Fortunately, Frito's old disc was still at the club house and, after a few shaky throws, he was able to get it under control for the remainder of the round.

All three teams were knotted up at seven under as the group approached hole ten when suddenly, a bowelogical emergency claimed one of the players on team 1. As his partner fought through the next couple of holes, the team finally conceded after completing hole 13 when scheduling conflicts took the second team member out of the round.

It was still knotted up when teams 2 and 3 headed into the "Travis Trail" (as holes 15 through 17 have come to be known). On 16, Frito and Russell took a stroke on team 3 when Frito, following a long drive by Russell, parked their second shot and made the subsequent putt for a birdie. Jackson and Stone settled for par giving team 2 a one stroke lead which they held through the remaining holes.
