DGLA: Oregon <– O –> Michigan Disc Swap

(sorry if some of you get this twice but some league coordinators are not in the Winter Point Series and I wanted to ensure they knew about this disc swap )

DGLA expanded the Statewide Cooperative Point Series to Oregon and Ohio this winter and already the expanded player cooperation has yielded new ideas. ROGUE RIDER (Lee) from Oregon sent me an idea to swap a few Michigan Event or Club stamped discs for some Oregon discs to help spice up their CTP and award disc selection. Pretty cool idea. ... more

DGLA expanded the Statewide Cooperative Point Series to Oregon and Ohio this winter and already the expanded player cooperation has yielded new ideas. ROGUE RIDER (Lee) from Oregon sent me an idea to swap a few Michigan Event or Club stamped discs for some Oregon discs to help spice up their CTP and award disc selection. Pretty cool idea. With a little more cooperation, Lee and I have expanded this idea to help all the interested clubs and leagues in our state to create the first Oregon <– O –> Michigan Disc Swap

What we purpose is to collect discs from any club/league in Michigan and in Oregon and then swap the discs and redistribute the discs to the participating club/leagues. If you’re interested please contact Foz or Lee depending on which state your club/league is in. We will explore how to grow and improve the disc swap, such as adding other state into the mix. Keep those ideas flowing. It's amazing what can be accomplished when we work cooperatively.

Disc must have a Club/League/Event stamp and in New condition.

Deliver your disc and $1.00 per disc (to help with shipping) to your state contact (see below) by Friday February 28th 2014 .

Note Michigan Organizations - Two discs max per organization for this first Oregon <– O –> Michigan Disc Swap as we have many more clubs than Oregon currently.

The discs will be randomly assigned and redistributed to the participating organizations before the Summer season kicks off. (early March)

In Michigan we will have a random drawing event at a local Ann Arbor brewery for those who want to attend in person (details to be announced). I will also try and post pictures and details of the discs / groups participating on Facebook so everyone can see what discs are being swapped and are up for grabs at a league near you….

We hope to swap at least 50 discs in this first exchange so check your club inventory, or personal stash and swap for something most likely no one else in your state has in there bag or on their wall.

From Week 8 stats for the MiCPS-W 2013

"Points Stats:

The Average Points earned per player this week 20.69, only increased 1.0634 points over last week, but the Max point total was increased by 26 points by Craig Przytulski earning 84 points in 2 rounds. One round at Lacey Inn Thursday Singles and the second at Club Kensington 2012-2013 Winter Dubs in which he hit hole 9 for a 50 point Winter Ace - Nice Shot!!! Craig. Now it's great to hit an Ace - I'd like to run some stats on Aces, how many, probability per hole ect. but what do you think the probability is that two players hit an Ace on the same hole during a given round? How about on the same card? Getting smaller. And they are brothers???? I can't do the math that quick but I suspect I don't have enough zeros to follow the decimal point - it's that low- but if you look at the leaderboard and notice that #2 on the weekly Points leaderboard is Andrew Przytulski with 80 points and only 1 round. I had to check into this one and luckily Jeff Kaluk who runs Club Kensington 2012-2013 Winter Dubs had this post in the talk section to confirm that this actually occurred:

Some players noticed the Points were being calculated with the old method - that has been updated - THANKS Pete and the Leaderboards will update upon the next league score posting. Reminder this point calculation levels the playing field a bit between small and large leagues. Still best two rounds of the week are included in point total and Winter Aces are worth 50 points. League coordinators do not need to do anything different or special - just enter your round scores as always and DiscGolfScene does the rest for the Point Series point calculation and monthly achievements - AWESOME!

The DGLA Players leaderboard is now active as well. This year DGLA Player level members are competing in the Winter and Summer Point series for the one time fee of $30 if signed up by Jan 15th; they get the player package (commemorative DGLA 2013 Putter and DGLA Glow mini), Get to vote on which course improvement project gets the DGLA Grant money, eligible for MDGO State Championship Berths and awards based on standing compared to the other DGLA Player members - hence the separate leaderboard. Player membership cutoff for Winter in January 15th - so no surprises at the end of the season or March 16th 2013 when we wrap up the MiCPS-W and award prizes and berths to the DGLA Player members who have been competing all season. DGLA Player members who sign up after Jan 15th only get the MiCPS-Summer for the same $30

Please encourage players to sign up for their Free Disc Golf Scene profile - you know this makes it easier and improve communication and participation. Also please promote the Free DGLA membership to help promote Disc Golf leagues all year long, lifetime membership number, increase our ability to get sponsor and try to help more clubs and leagues, while giving back more to the league players.

So we still have the limitation on handicapped leagues that you must enter the adjusted scores that payouts are based on to be included in the Point Series. Again - Thanks for all you guys do for the sport.

Help promote the Statewide Point Series and make sure your players know of the benefits of being members of the Disc Golf Scene as well as show their support for leagues by becoming a member of DGLA at least a Free member and if they desire payout then they should become Player Members of DGLA. Every Player member got a payout for this Summer Point Series and we hope to add additional benefits this year. Player members who join by mid Winter are in for both Winter and Summer for the same price as just Summer - No brainer there for your winter league players....

2) DGLA is always looking to to help leagues start or grow and improve. We have created a League resource area on the DGLA site with some initial templates and information to help provide insights to what different leagues do and why. This summer I had several conversations about payouts. It's always great to visit different leagues; small , large, competitive and just for fun and you quickly realize no one method fits all and nothing satisfies everyone. So it is useful for League Coordinators to know what has been tried, did it work and why or why not, so they can make smart decisions to define their league to their situation to maximize the success and fun.

So the question to everyone is what do you do for payouts and why? Any special notes or ideas to share, even if they are for one off special events or key aspects to be aware of.

My discussions this summer were related to the payout tables and generally whether the payout tables should be DEEP or STEEP. Generally I find the more competitive players want STEEP - more money for the few at the top. The more casual friendly players/leagues desire DEEP - more players get paid out but slightly less. What are your experiences and how do you deal with them?

Anyone find a payout table generator anyplace or is everyone still making up one or using one that has been passed around. I will be adding my $5 DEEP table to the existing STEEP table and would love to add any other examples or references to any generators so others have choices to make their league the best it can be for the group that plays them.

Is there any views or insights related to Free leagues or options for players to not pay and only play and how do you deal with this for doubles leagues?

Again I'm looking for the different ideas, any Pros and Cons to help other make decisions based on their situation or desired league but what I do know is there is no right or wrong answer so all constructive feedback is welcomed.

This year any unclaimed/unpaid for berths the day of the announced berth pick up will lose their berths.

The MDGO is now accepting Berth request for the 2013 season.

You must include the following info in the request

1) Your name (you may only request for 1 club or org.)
2) Club or org you are representing for.
3) Amount of berths you are requesting either a specific # or MAX
Last year MAX = 7 for previous participation in the Berth process
and 3 for 1st year participants.
4) How the Berths will be used.

Also if you wish to be a Feature Event (FE) in 2013 please include that in your request. This includes the FE's from last year.

If you are doing anything special - like Pre-round CTPs, raffles or other fun activities - let us know.
If new players need directions to where you meet, or special rules etc - let us know.

I will be bringing our Gateway Titan Pro basket that we will be raffling off at the end of the season, to those HLW that I can make it to. If anyone from the area is hitting other HLW I will try and get it there with them. We are allocating ten raffle tickets per HLW at $5 each - 1/2 of that stays with your club/league - so a quick $25 if your interested - let me know. Depending on how much we raise we may purchase another basket - we just don't know how many leagues will want to participate. You can sell the tickets or awards them for things like CTPs. You would send us the list of names with the money for those tickets sold or given out - You keep 1/2 for your club. So no tickets to keep track of - just names and some money and I'll help if I can make it to your HLW - but limited to just 10 tickets per HLW. We will put the names on the tickets and pull the winning ticket at a local event (maybe States) and announce the winner(s) and give away the basket(s). This is not a DGLA fundraiser but fun for the players and hopefully some funds for your league. We will continue to look for more fun things like this that help the players, help the courses and help your league.

Reminder - encourage your players to get on Disc Golf Scene - this helps connect us all to have more fun and do bigger things - it's free and easy. Then encourage them to at least show their support for Disc Golf leagues with a free DGLA membership so Disc Golf Leagues can grow and do bigger things easier.

Send me your Hype for your HLW and we will be posting it just before that week starts - Thursday or Friday before the weekend kicks off.

There are a many who use the HLW and Double points as a reason to travel the state and play different courses and different leagues. This helps the sport in many ways, besides see how leagues are done by different groups and increasing the league round and Ace pool, it helps connect and strengthen our Disc Golf League community.......

Currently we have 38 participating leagues - It breaks down like this:
5 Mon
5 Tue
5 Wed
5 Thur
5 Fri
4 Sat
7 Sun
2 TBD (private I could not see the scheduled dates)

Really - common someone else start up another Sat league so there are at least 5 leagues ever day of the week being played in the State of Michigan - AWESOME

So we should not have any issues with assigning dates. But please check your local tournament schedules and we will try not to have two leagues in the same area on the same day. But send me your preference or I will randomly assign them on Friday morning.

Please when you send me a message related to your league, include the league name - all my gray hair is from the gray matter departing my memory cells - so I have no memory capacity left and it would save me time to not to have to traverse several webpages to try and figure it out - Thanks

Also DGLA has a Titan Pro basket and some Gateway mid range discs that can be used for Pre-round CTPs - Let me know if your interested in having this for your HLW round and we can try and make arrangements to getting the stuff there. We will most likely sell some raffle tickets and also award each Player members a few tickets based on their final standing on the DGLA Player's only leader board and give this basket away at the end of the season. Pete improved the leader boards to show more stats and we will be using these to help highlight more players throughout the season. Thanks! Pete

DGLA has been looking at partnering with some Disc Golf merchants to enhance the payouts and simplify the work of the League Admin by providing a wider selection of merch and resolve the logistics of getting stuff to players. The Throw Shop has stepped up to get this kicked off. We hope that we can improve this idea to enable leagues to offer more without having to tie-up their cash, only to have to hold on to and transport merch that hopefully sells one day. Help remind your players to at least sign up for the Free DGLA membership and show their support for Disc Golf Leagues, lock in their life time membership number we are about to hit 50 which was my guess for the first year since we are not out promoting it it's still grass roots and only seen so far in Michigan which will change quickly. Don't you wish you had this opportunity with your PDGA# (OK a few of you have 4 digits but most of us are in the 5 digits and with DGLA we are talking 2 digits which to me means founding members who had a dream, who supported a vision and who made the difference - Oh and for free - bonus ;-).

Now if any of your league players want to help improve Mi Disc Golf course, Get a membership Putter and Glow Mini and be eligible for awards based on their standing on the Members Only Leader board than for $30 they can upgrade to the Player level before June 15th. They will have to wait for the 2013 season for their next opportunity. We are pushing ahead with some MiCPS-W discs - Mike Fortunato did a fantastic job of updating the MiCPS logo to a winter version and we will have some of these soon to raise some extra money for the PS. Eight leagues currently signed up, free for leagues to join. We will close the PS on Dec 31st to new leagues. So if you have a Winter league or plan on creating one send Scott or I a message to add your league. Goal is to beat last year - 14 leagues 361 players

The Disc Golf League Association (DGLA) is proud to host the 3rd annual, Michigan Cooperative Point Series – Winter. (MiCPS-W) for 2011/12. The Winter season was the start of it all and is a proving grounds for Hot ideas during the Cold rounds of Mi Winter Disc Golf.

The MiCPS-W 2011/12 brings leagues and players closer together. Through the use of Disc Golf Scene all the scores, pictures, videos and chat from all leagues and players come together, enabling all the players throughout the state to see who is doing what, and what new things each league is doing and what is going on at each of the Michigan courses. Growing the sport of Disc Golf together and coming together to celebrate the Spring thaw at the end of the season and to crown the Michigan State Disc Golf League Winter Champion.

OK the number of players during Winter are not as big as Summer - Big Surprise BUT the number of Winter players is growing. The more players see events going on throughout the winter like leagues and tournaments the more they want to get out of the house and play some Disc Golf. It's exciting to see so many more players out all season long. Get your hand warmers ready, your sled, screws in your boots or what ever winter tricks to be ready for the variable conditions we get to play in.

MiCPS-W 2011/12:

Sunday Nov 20 – Saturday March 17th **

** Leagues can always run outside the MiCPS-W dates but MiCPS-W points will automatically accumulate only between these dates.

Cutoff Date: Dec 31st 2011 – last day to add any additional leagues to the MiCPS Winter.

Key highlights and details for Winter:

Winter Aces: Worth 50 points – League Admin – this is automatically calculated so if you want to use a different point system for your individual league Aces you can.

Ice Cold Points: If the temperature drops below 15 degrees with wind chill for your league round, the league Admin just needs to notify us and we will confirm the weather data and update the schedule for that league round to Double Points.

A few Reminders:

The MiCPS automatically keeps your best two rounds per week (Sunday - Saturday) when calculating your MiCPS total points. This is automatically recalculated when ever new scores are posted or scores are updated.

Also for Handicap league - You must enter the hadicap adjusted scores - the same ones used for payouts, awards must be submitted scores for your league round. Pete is looking into helping with this and we are exploring other options to help Handicapped leagues but for now this is the fairest way for all players and leagues to be combined.

Yes every round can help - with the three tier point system based on the number of players in a given round even rounds with only a few players can make a difference. You must have 4 players for the round to be included but 1st place will be getting 18 points and maybe double if it's below 15 degrees play often.

Players must have a profile on Disc Golf Scene to be linked and automatically accumulate points in the MiCPS.

Players must have their profile linked in the leagues they play to have those rounds count for points in the MiCPS - Contact the League admin if you need to be linked - they need your PDGA # or Email address listed in your DGS profile to link you.

So get out and play some Michigan Winter Disc Golf.

Winter Point Series Grand Finale - Saturday March 26th - Almost Here

Just a quick reminder and request to help spread the word about the MiCPS-W Grand Finale March 26th.

There has not been as much discussion or hype this Winter and I know from polling players that many are not aware of the Finale March 26th. Please help spread the word during leagues and when your talking with players.

I believe there will be a berth or two awarded for the Mi State Championship as well.

If any league wants to award MiCPS-W berths we need to make sure those are reported by March 12th so that players have a week to register after all the berths have been awarded. For future thought I took a berth and put it up for grabs with a CTP challenge - $1 for two throws and raised enough to cover the cost, so I did another. I wish I had started earlier in the season. Depending on your turn out your league may make a few bucks this way as well.

Winter Point Series Grand Finale - Saturday March 26th

Winter Point Series - Reminder on Double Points

If your league round dips below 15 degrees (including wind chill) at any point during the round, send Foz or I a message here and we will award double points to your league on that day.

For example, I know that Kensington had double points this Sunday. Jeff, in the future please send us a message. We will check the weather report if necessary for that day then change the multiplier to double it up.

I'd like to put together a photo-montage style video of the MI 2010 leagues and play this during the Final event before and after the awards. But I did not achieve my goal of attending every league at least once this summer, so now I'm asking you all for a bit of help to make this side project more complete. It also gives you a bit of control over what images are used to represent your leagues. I hope to increase the odds that every players will ... more

A call for photos of your leagues:

I'd like to put together a photo-montage style video of the MI 2010 leagues and play this during the Final event before and after the awards. But I did not achieve my goal of attending every league at least once this summer, so now I'm asking you all for a bit of help to make this side project more complete. It also gives you a bit of control over what images are used to represent your leagues. I hope to increase the odds that every players will see themselves in at least a few pictures and capture the 2010 Summer Leagues visually for the history archieves.

If you have a few pictures of:
Group shots
Registration or league admin and helpers
Key events that would stand out in your league members minds (a focus on the players and fun)

Upload them to DGS and send me the link and any short description with the league name, date and key info. I will download them and add them to the montage and turn it into a video.

The group shot is the most important so if you don't have one already try and grab one at your next league. The pictures don't need to be perfect and it's kind of fun to take a few shots as the group normally get carried away after a few seconds. Later watching 2-3 frames of this happen starting with the most serious and watching it unfold is often very entertaining and telling of the players personality and comfort as a group.

Any help on collecting a few pictures is greatly appreciated to capture those involved and what it looked like.

Pre-registration: Mandatory. We will close registration roughly three weeks prior to October 16th. Need to verify lead time on some of the players pack items. This is needed to pre-set the pools of players and plan for the highest quality event.

*Any player who's name is on the MICPS leaderboard is eligible to register for the final event*

Format:
Round 1 - 9:00-12:00 random draw doubles. 18 holes. Payout is $10 per player cash. There will be pools of players playing simultaneously on multiple courses. We will do our best to split up players evenly and fairly over the different courses.

Lunch 1:00 - 2:00

Final 9 2:00ish. Top 10 in points are in a final 9 showcase for cash skins.

Awards to follow

Entry Fee: $30
Breakdown
$10 goes to player pack (MICPS T Shirt)
$10 goes to the doubles round (1st round) payout
$7 goes to top XX in points (see table)
$3 goes to final 9 payout
All money taken in for entry fees stays in the final event.

Payouts for top in points to be determined based on a table.

Food seems to be a logistical nightmare, so we reduced the registration fee so people can plan for what they want.
