DGLA Mission Statement

The Disc Golf League Association (DGLA) is an organization that promotes disc golf by supporting: disc golf leagues for all levels of players, course creation and improvements, and the growth of local clubs and leagues. We foster a cooperative effort to achieve greater things for the players and organizers of disc golf. The DGLA also keeps an eye on the bigger picture: working for sustainable environmental practices and a strong local community.

Greetings Disc Golfers,
Welcome to edition 1 of the Disc Golf League Association newsletter! Thanks for reading. We plan to issue this newsletter on a monthly basis just to update the members on all of what is happening in the world of DGLA.
Let’s start this off by talking about the big update to DiscGolfScene and the Michigan Cooperative Point Series (MICPS). Recently you may have noticed that the leaderboards have expanded to track many different stats. Before we just had the overall points battle, but now we have: weekly, monthly, and overall points as well as separate leaderboards for number of wins, number of rounds, and number of unique leagues played. Your discgolfscene profile may get some extra bling by added achievements that are tied to these new leaderboards. We also plan to use these new leaderboards to award discs, berths and other prizes (more on that later). Please take a minute to recognize Pete Crist, who made all of this possible through his programming wizardy and hard work. Thanks Pete.

One other new addition to DiscGolfScene is the “DGLA Members” only leaderboard. Are you a member yet? Wait, what does that even mean? Why would I become a member of DGLA? Hold on, let’s address these one at a time:
What is a DGLA Member?

Membership is open to everyone. We offer three levels of membership:
Player Member ($30 annual investment) – This is the main option for a player who wants to compete for prizes in the point series.
• Eligible for prizes in all competitions of the Michigan Cooperative Point Series for the current year.
• Member’s package including a DGLA disc and mini
• A portion of your investment goes to the DGLA Course Improvement Fund (more on that below) and you have voting rights in the selection process.
• Access to member’s area on DGLA website, and ability to post course improvement projects and disc golf vendors.
• Lifetime DGLA# (Hurry up, those low numbers are going quick)
Contributing Member ($15 annual investment) – This option exists primarily for those who wish to support our projects but are not interested in the league point series prizes.
• A portion of your investment goes to the DGLA Course Improvement Fund and you have voting rights in the selection process.
• Access to member’s area on DGLA website, and ability to post course improvement projects and disc golf vendors.
• Lifetime DGLA#
Supporting Member (No Cost)

So why would I become a member? Well, if you play a league on a regular basis, then you can win stuff! You also get a nice members package each year that you renew. A membership in DGLA shows that you are showing support, and numbers speak loudly to others, especially sponsors and parks and recreation decision-makers.

Course Improvement Fund

Through our member investments we will be funding a course improvement fund. Here’s how it will work: We will take submissions from people who have a need for a new course or a new course improvement. All of the eligible projects will be displayed on the DGLA website. All paying members will have a single vote, and the top vote getters will be awarded cash to fund their project! Sounds simple, no? If you have a project in mind please contact us or check out the website to find more information on how to win funding.

DGLA makes the MDGO State Championship Berth Awards and more....

OK – with only a few hours for the last berth to be registered we have finally awarded all our berths. I’d first like to thanks MDGO (Michigan Disc Golf Organization, www.mdgo.org , http://www.discgolfscene.com/clubs/MDGO_Michigan_Disc_Golf_Org) who takes on helping all the clubs and organizations in Michigan with planning of events and working cooperatively to enhance the Michigan Disc Golf scene (experience ;-). They also take on the huge task of organizing the Michigan Disc Golf State C ... more

OK – with only a few hours for the last berth to be registered we have finally awarded all our berths. I’d first like to thanks MDGO (Michigan Disc Golf Organization, www.mdgo.org , http://www.discgolfscene.com/clubs/MDGO_Michigan_Disc_Golf_Org) who takes on helping all the clubs and organizations in Michigan with planning of events and working cooperatively to enhance the Michigan Disc Golf scene (experience ;-). They also take on the huge task of organizing the Michigan Disc Golf State Championship held each year in Ludington. Multiple courses and hundreds of players and it grows bigger each year. It’s an amazing event and a great way to celebrate with friends across the state, another great year of Michigan Disc Golf. MDGO made it possible for tournaments and leagues throughout the state to award a limited number of berths and berth packages to this event. The MiCPS secured as many as we could to help recognize as many great players as possible for their involvement and performance in the 2011 Mi Cooperative Point Series. We have to thank Matt Wiles of the Freeland Disc Golf Club and Kurt Maty of Wednesday Night METRO DETROIT DISC GOLF LEAGUE along with Matt Schooley and Chris Gee of Ypsi Dubs for their contribution of 4 additional berths to make our total 9 berths to be awarded to MiCPS players. Thanks for your belief in the MiCPS and endless efforts to improve Mi Disc Golf.

Note If you have a berth you need to register it TODAY (Aug 26th) or it will be lost and up for grabs in the Last Chance Qualifier.....

If you don’t have a berth you can compete on Friday Sept 2nd in the Last Chance Qualifier, http://www.discgolfscene.com/tournaments/Last_Chance_Qualifier_for_States_2011 for your chance to compete in the Mi State Championship, two day event Sept 3rd and 4th.

Again a Big CONGRATS to Mike Henry (aka White Mike, WM) on his great performance all summer in the MiCPS and his overall win with 940 points. Mike will be at States defending his state title from last year.

Berth Awards

So we went to the leader board and stats and wanted to award the first berth for the most rounds played. The MiCPS has several goals with a very important goal to encourage as much play as possible throughout the state and at different leagues. This helps spread the great ideas from each league and each player to other leagues and players. With more players there is more money and of course more points are up for grabs as well. The Highlighted League of the week also helps with this goal and can add a bit more excitement for the round.

So the 2011 MiCPS summer season was 17 weeks long. It’s great that we have so many leagues in so many courses throughout the state. It makes it easier to try to get a league round in each week and if we are luck we can squeeze a few more in. The MiCPS automatically only counts your two best scores in a given week. This helps balance the difference between those who can only get one or two league rounds in a week and those who are fortunate enough to be able to play more, without completely removing the benefit of playing more rounds. Rules like this helped keep the spread of points narrower with strong competition all the way down to the end.

So with 64 rounds, an average of almost 4 rounds per week, Kurt Maty in 5th place had the most rounds played this season - OUTSTANDING but he already had a berth (No surprise there) so we had to keep looking. Next on the list of most rounds played is Travis Smith in 7th place on the leader board, with 45 rounds. An amazing season and all those rounds paid off with a berth award and continued improvement in performance. All that practice will pay off at States – good luck Travis.

There were 47 leagues in the 2011 Summer MiCPS and we are excited to see more and more ladies playing the sport and in the MiCPS. These are some amazing players and they are helping to pave the way for others and introducing the sport to more women. Some leagues focused on providing a great environment for just the ladies to hone their skills while having fun in a comfortable environment. We wanted to recognize the achievements and effort of these ladies and these leagues. We are happy to be able to recognize and help ensure two top performers in the 2011 MiCPS have berths and are competing at this year’s state championship.

At 128th and with 19 rounds Lisa Harbor, along with at 135th and 18 rounds Jen Dom where awarded berths. Great season ladies, see you in Ludington

So we still had 6 berths remaining to award. Back to running the leaderboard and checking each player as we head down the list to see who already had earned a berths and who the next eligible players are based on total points. We contacted each player to verify that they had not been awarded a berth recently. Not surprising but many players had already secured their berths at other league events and tournament throughout the state. A few players expressed that they would be unable to attend the state championship this year and would rather see the berth presented to other players who would be able to attend and represent at States. We are sorry they can not attend but appreciate their sacrifice for the benefit of the other players –miCps “C” – Cooperative – THANKS!

Help pass on that fun and fulfillment to others, whether other players you met on the course or friends you encourage to come out and have a blast at leagues. We would love to give out some bigger awards to the leaders, and we are working on that. This season was all about honing in on a fair and balanced point system, and we are just about there. We are looking at ways of raising funds to be able to provide some nice prizes in future league seasons.

So we did have some berths to the MDGO state finals to award, and those people have been contacted. We awarded five berths to the top five in points who don't already have a berth. We also awarded berths to the top two women in the point series, and finally awarded one berth to the person with the most rounds overall. We are waiting on confirmation from a few winners, so we will announce that once all have confirmed.

Most rounds posted was Kurt Maty with 64.
Highest points per round average (more than 10 rounds) was Michael Carlson at 32 and highest overall was greg lane at 48.7.

Thanks to all of the people that made this a great summer league season. We'll be posting details about the winter 2011-2012 Michigan Cooperative Point Series soon! Top Ten Action in review:

Well with only ONE week left and two HLW this week, we are down to the wire. Interestingly no one new entered the top ten this week but there were several changes in the order. Andy Steiner grabs 56 points and moves up to Nineth dropping Dale "Llama" Wrobel to the Tenth spot. Travis Smith slips from seventh to eight and Bob Smart drops to seventh. On a positive note Dave Milewski jumps 70 points and two spots upward to sixth. Ben Ciccarelli was able to steal the fifth spot marking the last movement in the top 10 this week. The rest just added points but held their spots. Kurt Matty grabbed 42 pts at fourth and at third with another 49 points added Dj Hunt, while Ben Calhoun earning 64 pts holds on to the second spot and Mike Henry widens the gap with 92 points and command of first place on the Michigan Cooperative Point Series leaderboard with 904 points.

Well with only two weeks left the heat is increasing to stay in the Top Ten on the MiCPS leaderboard. Travis Smith has them both by 1 point to move up to seventh this week. Although the gap from sixth to 1st was tightened by eight points since last week the order did not change. Ben Ciccarelli at sixth, bob smart holds on to fifth, "Wednesday Night METRO DETROIT DISC GOLF LEAGUE" (Kurt Maty) forth, DJ Hunt third, Ben Calhoun with 772 holds on to second for the umpteenth week but the gap between first and second widened this week and WM holds on to the top position on the MiCPS leaderboard with only two weeks left and only 5 HLW left in those two weeks throughout the state. Could the last HLW of the season at Independence Lake on Saturday August 13, 2011 at noon decide the winner - Wow what a season.

Top Ten Action in review:

Matt powers stays in the top ten after dropping from 6th to tenth. Mike Raley jumps into the top ten at the ninth spot by one point - will he make it back to the top in the next three weeks to capture the title once again??? Down three spots this week Travis Smith lands at eighth just behind Andy Steiner who drop from third to seventh this week. One of the new names at the top that caused all the other to drop in standing is Ben Ciccarelli who jumps in at the sixth spot - so those 80 points from a second place finish at the Ypsi Dubs HLW seemed to help out. Which is also the case for Bob Smart who tied for third in the HLW and grabbed 72 points to catapult himself into fifth place. Not new to the Top Ten but moving up this week and also a recipient of the double points helped Kurt Maty, AKA "Wednesday Night METRO DETROIT DISC GOLF LEAGUE", move up from ninth to fourth this week. DJ Hunt was unseated from the top of the leader board and lands at third this week, displaced by two other HLW beneficiaries. Ben Calhoun grabbed 60 points to again hold on to the second spot, while "W M" grabbed the Ypsi Dubs HLW win and 88 points (max for a HLW) and he takes the top spot on the leader board this week. Top Ten Action in review:

“W M” grabs another 42 points since last week but not enough to hold on to the 9th spot but enough to hold on and remain in the Top Ten on the MiCPS leaderboard. “Wednesday Night METRO DETROIT DISC GOLF LEAGUE “ also drops from 7th to 9th along with Dave Milewski who loses one spot, end up at 8th but still missing some points based on posted scores. Matt Lacey climbs from 10th last week to 7th currently with a 66 point week. Matt Powers dropped 3 positions from 3rd to 6th while Travis Smith climbs three spots to 5th. Ron Howard with 38 points also notches up one spot from 5th to 4th following Andy Steiner who extended the gap with 44 points moves up from 4th to 3rd this week.

Ben Calhoun posted 70 points this week to close the gap on Dj Hunt but Dj holds on to first place by 48 points and Ben maintains second for another week. The gab between 1st and second is a rounds worth of points. The gap between 1st and 10th is only 110 points which would be two good rounds or less than one double point round apart. Let’s see what havoc the HLW have on the leader board this week as we only have 4 weeks left of the MiCPS-S 2011.

Matt Lacey holds on to the 10th spot on the MiCPS leader board out of 638 players statewide. "W M" jumps into the top ten this week along with Travis Smith at the number 9 and 8 spots respectively. "Wednesday Night METRO DETROIT DISC GOLF LEAGUE" moves up one spot to 7th. Dave Milewski drops from 3rd to 6th but he is missing some rounds so expect an upward adjustment when that's resolved. Ron Howard up two positions to take over possession of fifth place, right behind Andy Steiner in fourth place. Andy is currently only 1 point away from Matt Powers in third place. Matt this time last week held the top spot. Ben Calhoun holds on to the second place spot again this week even with only one round posted for the week. DJ Hunt jumps four places to takes the top spot from Matt Powers. Yes during a Highlighted League of the Week points are automatically doubled and these are normally higher turnout rounds so they normally turn out to be the Max point awards for each league. Well after a week we have 20 participating leagues and already 183 players are on the MiCPS-S 2011 leaderboard. Now that's a great start and we'll see many more as the summer season starts to heat up. We are well on our way to beat last year 35 leagues and 801 players.... The Highlighted league of the weeks will be posted shortly for those leagues already signed up. Well you may have notice the point totals just updated on the Leader Board - Sorry I had not change the Point Series configuration to use the calculated points versus the individual league points. This enables individual leagues to use their own points system for their league while having a common point system for the MiCPS. There will be another update soon as the calculation to take into account league round size has not been activated yet. I'll post when that update hits and the points are updated.

Well get out and enjoy that snow golf while it lasts - hopefully it won't last long and we'll be in shorts and t-shirts soon.

The Michigan Cooperative Point Series League begins this Sunday (4/17)

The Sun is out, temperatures rising and summer leagues are springing up and the Michigan Cooperative Point Series - Summer is ready to kick off again. Sunday April 17th through Saturday August 13th The points calculation has been tweaked this season based on all the feedback but the core is the same. The points calculation has been tweaked this season based on all the feedback but the core is the same. The changes just narrow the point spread and encourage the new or smaller leagues. It should make for a more exciting summer season.

Remember the MiCPS automatically uses your best TWO rounds at any participating leagues in a given week (Sunday to Saturday). Highlighted League of the Week (HLW) have double points so check the MiCPS-Summer 2011 schedule and look for the highlighted leagues that say "Double Points". It's a great time to travel and play the different leagues; see other courses, play them with the local players and these tend to be the larger league rounds so there are more points for everyone who plays.

Summer Aces are worth 25 points.

There is no Final Event for points - so if you can't travel you are not penalized. All points come from regular scheduled league rounds - play as often as you can to maximize you point potential!!!

There will be some other enhancements and benefits as the season goes along - so get out and have some fun in your regular league and make it out to play the many awesome Michigan courses that we have and experience the different leagues that we have access to - Michigan is an awesome Disc Golf State. You may even win a berth to the MDGO Michigan State Championship through your play in the MiCPS-S.
