Log Lake Park

Great technical course. Loads of trees in fairways but still has well defined throwing lanes. This is the kind of course I would hit every day with a bag full of mid ranges and putters if it was closer to home. Every player looking to take their game to the next level should spend time on courses like log lake, throwing dozens of tee shots mastering the finesse aspect of the game. Great technical course. Loads of trees in fairways but still has well defined throwing lanes. This is the kind of course I would hit every day with a bag full of mid ranges and putters if it was closer to home. Every player looking to take their game to the next level should spend time on courses like log lake, throwing dozens of tee shots mastering the finesse aspect of the game. Course was well maintained and fairway although loaded with trees didn't have the cluttered feel some have. My only complaint would be the lack of uniform tee pads and some aging baskets. Also players could really benefit from some bright colored paint on the baskets, many of them even if straight ahead were hard to see making some throws blind that shouldn't be.

Summary: Solid course with great technical play, fun to play repeatedly, and over the last few years has really been well taken care of and maintained.

Rating a disc golf course is challenging on so many levels, because it's hard to determine the standards by which you establish your baseline rating. For the most part, I'm looking at three main criteria when I rate a course.

FIRST, is it fair and playable? I hate playing DG courses that are inherently unfair because of irresponsible pin or obstacle placement, or careless design (I played a park in Idaho that players were expected to shoot THROUGH a playground full of kids and families!). Log Lake course is challenging and technical, but it is VERY playable! There are many narrow fairways, but they are obtainable and aggressive players can find lots of birdies and at least a couple of solid ace opportunities.

SECOND, is it challenging? Being fair and playable is great, but if the course isn't challenging, if it's all wide open and just a matter of grip it and rip it, I don't necessarily enjoy that style of play. Log Lake is challenging for players of all levels. The trees are everywhere, but again, clearly defined fairways create a reasonable approach to each basket. Long players might enjoy this less, but it's a great course (with a couple of opportunities to air it out...ish...) for challenging your short and mid-range game.

THIRD, is it worth replaying? I've thrown a few courses where, after finishing, you kind of walk away not sure if you'd come back. Log Lake begs you to return. You know you should have birdied 2, or you made an ace run on 9, or you just barely kissed that tree on 16, so coming back is vital to your morale. You can run some low scores here, and you can have your butt handed to you when the trees play ping pong with discs.

This is definitely an "A" level course. It is playable, it is challenging, and it is worth replaying. In fact, I love playing here and come back often for the pleasure (and sometimes the pain!) of playing a solid NW Michigan course.
